THE HOUSE AT THE CROSSING snippets list

Hi guys and welcome to The House at The Crossing.

The House at The Crossing is the main house where main characters from the Demon Series, Attic Mirror... all live. This novel is set before Demon Soul, when Margot (mum in Demon Soul) first arrives at the house. It's a sort of prequel and it explains a bit why there are so many different people in this house and why so many strange things happen there.

The House At The Crossing (Finished Draft)

There is a house in the middle of everything. That is the place where people go when there is nowhere else's left. That is a place of travel, change and rebirth. At this crossing all the worlds and realms meet and so do all the versions of Margo. 

Margo needed a break from her chaotic life so she answered and invitation from aunt Teresa and arrived in her mysterious house. But she didn't arrive alone. The forces at work brought a lot more of her than she expected.

In a house where the wall and rooms change depending on your need and where walls are gateway to different world, Margo is up for a few surprises.

“Hum, blood is delicious and nutricious,” Dylan says making a spectacle of sucking it in.
“Cut it out, it's getting tiring.”
Viorel has his back against the sink and he is observing us. He looks pale.
“How come you can walk in the sun light?” My other self asks.
“That's one of the little perk of being an hybrid,” Viorel says.
Dylan snorts.

Dylan laughs and takes his cup from Viorel's hand.
“Nobody is kicking anyone out of this place Margy and I can promise you that you need us. If something goes wrong, you'll need vampire brain and muscle to fix it.”
“The house has all I need, always,” my other self says rising her chin.
“Told you I liked his one,” Dylan says and he sinks his teeth in his cup of blood.
“Keep that away from me,” I say.
I'm forcing myself to smile to avoid the gagging reflex. It's a trick I learned changing diapers.

“I'm not sure she will do,” he says, “she looks a bit....” Then he turns to my other self and smell the air around her. “Maybe this one.”
“It's just one of them,” Wendy says. “They are just split.”
Dylan shrugs. “It happens, it won't last long, though I maintain I like this one better.”
“And I don't like you,” my other self says. “When I'm the guardian, you're out of here.”

“And live forever in this decrepit body that can barely move around anymore. With my joins pain and arthritis.”
“I'm sure Viorel can figure out a way to rejuvenate you,” Dylan says giving Viorel with a knowing look.
And somehow the crazy idea that Viorel does have the power to give back Teresa her youth strikes me like a fact.
“No, no, no, I'll have none of that Dylan and you know it. I'm happy with my life and I will also be happy when it's over,” Teresa says. “I don't need anything except to teach the new guardian her role here.”
Dylan turns to me and I feel the hairs rose at the back of my neck.

I hug my daughter.
“And mummy too,” Dylan says. “Sweet.”
“Stop it,” Teresa says with a smile. “This is Marguerite, your new guardian.”
“Oh no no no no no, you know I don't like change, Teresa,” Dylan says.
“Human don't live for ever Dylan, or have you forgotten?”
Dylan comes closer to Teresa and smell the air around her.
“We don't need a new guardian, I can help you, you know that.”

I'm scared, for me, for my children, for my other self and for all of us. This Dylan is downright terrifying.
He walks to the cupboard and grabs two cups that he hands to Viorel who pours the blood into them. The smell makes me gag and Malicia starts to cry.
Dylan turns to her and smile. He has fangs showing on each side of his mouth the sorts that's to be planted in people's neck.
“Hey! Hey! Hey!” he says. “Little human thinks I'm scary.”

“We don't know that one, Dylan,” the boy answers and I turned to him against my instinct to keep watching the vampire.
“You're Viorel,” I say. I'm not sure but Teresa did say he looked like a boy, didn't she?
“Viorel Ustrel,” Viorel answered with a bow before getting something out of the fridge that looks like a blood bag.
I feel like I'm going to be sick. The other vampire is next to him. He looks more like he is in his twenties but he isn't much taller than Viorel. I guess that makes it two vampires in the house and not one like I had imagined.

He looks like he is thirteen or fourteen. He has dark skin that seems to have been drained of all blood and black hair cut short like my other self. He crosses the room and walk to the window to close the curtain. It's not completely dark but the curtains cut most of the sunlight.
A second man enter. That one has to be Viorel. Blond hair, pale white skin almost transparent on the cheeks, red eyes with a tendency toward looking a bit blue on the edge.
“We can take her out V, that wouldn't be the first time,” the second male says.

I wonder why she is telling me all this but never to my other self, why I keep trying to get lost in the thought of who I am and what could have been and was but my other self doesn't seem to have that problem.
“But we can't go in those worlds anyway,” my other self says. “We'll have the same problem in whatever realm, be it the human world, or acorn or whatever else is out there.”
She finally found the hole in my little plan and it didn't even take her that long.
“But you can go out once you're one,” I say. “Once whatever happens that gets us together happens we'll be able to visit every single world we want.”
“That's not really true,” says a male voice behind me.
There is this kid standing in the door way.

She loses a bit of her color and I feel a bit stronger. I'm not sure what is happening but that move I just made seems to be bringing things back to me, from her. I just hope we aren't going for a transfer in both direction.
I'm suddenly thinking about what life would be if you knew the outcome of everything and basically that's what happening to me at the moment. I know the outcome of every choices I made and didn't make because they actually happened to a part of me that wasn't mine.
Teresa's cold hand once again landed on my forearm.
“Don't think too much my dear, keep it simple. If you enter a loop you won't be able to get out of it for days,” Teresa says.

That spikes the interest of my other self, personally I don't really care. I just want to sleep.
“There are portals, all over the house,” Teresa says. “some are in used, other not so much, others we haven't discover yet I supposed, others have been clocked or banned.”
She seems sad saying the last bit but I am not too sure why.
“So you just jump in the portal and you're there,” I say.
My other self is not talking because she is trying to stubbornly show that she doesn't care and that she just want to get out, though if she gets out now, on top of needing to be on medication for like the rest of our life, she might never have a chance to see the rest of the worlds out there. That must totally sucks being her right now.

And I finally have a plan to diffuse the animosity in the room. She likes travel, so I'm going to get her some and maybe she'll stay long enough to give me back that part of me she has taken from me. The part of me that will help me fight back for whatever I want in my life.
“I agree, I wanted to come here, that's why I called you,” I said. “So I guess technically even the most reluctant part of me to be here sort of agreed to let the part that wanted to come here, come here.”
“All of me wanted to come here, all of me wanted to escape Acorn,” Wendy said.

“And how do you go to acorn?” I asked. “How do you go to different worlds?”

“You came here on your own free will,” Teresa says.
I don't know how she can be so calm. Somehow, I feel defeated by the way things are going. I have three kids to take care of, I have to deal with all those exes and what they did to me and my kids. Mikala is gone and unless I go back to my universe and get her back from her father, she will be gone forever and I have lost all the fight in me because that other one has it. Maybe it will be easier to go out. Maybe it will be easier to each get back to our own problems that lead us here in the first place and stop being all mixed up in the problems of our other selves but honestly I don't know how to deal with that anymore. It's too much and even if I go out, I'll remember and I know that there is a version of me that will never see Mikala again and a version of me that will want to know what will happen if we stayed here and a version of me that really want to come back and maybe she does.

“If you go out, you'll split in multiple parts of you but never make a complete person in any universe until your second version here goes out too, which means, you won't be able to function properly. You'll be depressed. You'll be anxious. You'll be utterly out of your mind trying to bring the pieces of your life back together and not finding them because they'll be here.” Teresa said.
My other self glare at her and crossed her arms in front of her chest.
“So this letter was a trap,” my other self says. “You are basically trying to keep us locked up in here without our consent.”
