Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

How was your first morning in China? Followed by an emoticon kiss.

I guessed Seiji just woke up.

Not bad, as boring as any introduction but I met some friends already.

That's my girl. Have fun! I'm going out for the job interview, fingers crossed.

You'll get it, definitely, fingers crossed.

“Boyfriend?”

“Yeah, I have a new one, that's the first part of the long story.”

“I hope we'll find a nice a quiet place to chat about it,” Deborah said.

Mystery Monday 243: Murder at the Conference 140

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

We finally made it and figured out when was our poster session. Deborah didn't have a poster. She had a talk two days later. She had been chosen to give the talk for her group. That was another advantage of being an experimentalist. There were so many people working together that each and everyone of them could present their work at different conferences through the year so that even the postdocs had a chance to give talks. I hadn't given a talk since my PhD unless you wanted to count the seminar at my lab or the talk I gave at the local Japanese conference where I was the only one talking in English and never had any questions about anything. I couldn't ask them anything either, it was all in Japanese and even their slide shows didn't always make sense to me. I wish I could give a talk here. I needed that sort of adrenaline rush. At least, I would have a reason to be scared before getting on stage. Instead of the constant fear inside of me turning in my stomach.

Mystery Monday 242: Murder at the Conference 139

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

I didn't see Christa all morning, she was there. I didn't think she would miss the introduction or any talks but she wasn't around any place I went to or any people I knew. I was happy to be with Deborah, that was a nice change and with all the people I had been talking to, I knew I wasn't bad at people. And I wasn't getting triggered into a panic attack either. It was refreshing. It was what I had hoped for in China.

At the first break after the introduction, they had completed the registration. We had to tell them where we were going at the week-end so that they gave us coupons. We had to pay for the conference dinner because they had a problem to include the option on the website and only asked for registration without fees. It was a bit of a mess. Most people didn't know where to go as everything from getting the schedule to getting the book of abstract or deal with the extra activities was in different rooms, on different floors.

Mystery Monday 241: Murder at the Conference 138

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

“Und du musste alles erklaren.”

“Sicher aber nicht jetzt.”

We finished the breakfast speaking English. During the conferences, I was always to make one good friend. This time around, maybe it was going to be Ryuichi. He followed us to the university, sat with us through the introduction and even stayed with us during the coffee breaks which didn't have cookies but fresh fruits instead including some Asian fruits that I had never tasted before. There were a lot of people though not that many I knew. It had been said that most Europeans and some Americans weren't going to make it. China was far away and more expensive to reach then an European country though I believed the price of the hotel would be a lot cheaper. I guess it always seemed like Asia was on another planet at least for some people, the end of the world.

Mystery Monday 240: Murder at the Conference 137

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

“I moved to Dresden. I can't leave Germany it seems at least not as my home base laboratory. I have spent a few month in Kalamazoo. They have a museum with a huge catbus, it made me think of you.”

“Actually, I haven't seen any in Japan yet, even at the Ghibli museum they don't have a huge one.”

“How odd!”

Christa made a show of standing up.

“I'm going, I don't want to be late.”

“We'll follow soon.”

There was still plenty of time and the rest of us were only in the middle of our breakfast.

“Was ist her Problem?”

“Das ist eine sehr long Geshichte,” I answered. It was bad to talk in German in front of people who couldn't speak it but sometimes, girls needed their secrets. Also Deborah and I were more comfortable this way, we had started in German and rarely spoke English to one another.

Mystery Monday 239: Murder at the Conference 136

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

She finished her exam and joined my bunch of crazy foreign friends on our nights out. It was a lot of fun to have her around, she knew the place a lot better than most of us and we spend a lot of times in beer gardens.

“It's too bad the introduction wasn't last night, I'm so sleepy. Almost nobody managed to get up on time for breakfast, people are going to be noisy all morning. I hope they'll have cookies during the breaks.”

“And I hope they'll have Chinese food for lunch,” I said.

Christa threw me a dark stare but said nothing. She didn't need too, I could almost hear her thoughts about my diet, I was that used to them. I decided to ignore her and concentrate on Deborah.

“So where are you now?”

Mystery Monday 238: Murder at the Conference 135

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

“Deborah, this is Christa and Ryuichi,” I said. “Guys, this is Deborah from Germany, she is doing experiments.”

“You always know everybody,” Deborah said.

“It's not too hard, they are from my lab,” I answered.

When I first met Deborah, I was in Germany doing anything but physics. I was taking care of kids as an au-pair for the summer and she lived next door. One day, she had knocked at the door to tell me to stop playing the piano because she couldn't study with all that noise. I wasn't very good at the piano, I'm still not, I stopped the lessons too young and started back again too old and too irregularly.

They had a deal about the piano playing time which I wasn't aware of, I guessed nobody expected me to play while the children were at school. So she explained it to me, all high speed in German and all I could really understand was that I was bothering her and that she was studying physics. I had to make her slow down a bit but we ended up both sitting at her parent's kitchen table with a glass of cold green tea in front of an electromagnetic problem. So far so good for my summer break.

Mystery Monday 237: Murder at the Conference 134

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

“Is that seat taken?”

Christa glanced up without much more reaction.

“No,” I said.

“I wasn't sure you would come but I sure hoped so,” the girl said.

My crazy German friend Deborah Steiner placed her breakfast tray on the table and sat next to me. Deborah was as blond as I had browned hair. She was as tall as I was small. She was in all physical appearance, my complete opposite. And she always had crazy stories about physicist in her lab or at the local conferences and seminars she was regularly attending. She was an experimentalist, she traveled to do her manipulations all over Europe. That was a good life. I wished I could travel more but parallelising huge codes wasn't really part of my side of theory... yet. I hoped one day, to have a chance to work on a huge machine running calculations close to light speed. Sometimes taking a week for one data point tended to be a bit boring.

Mystery Monday 236: Murder at the Conference 133

Hello mystery lovers and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.
I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

“I've got to go, I'll see you later,” our supervisor said standing up. “You know where is the place for the introduction, right?”

“Yes, no problem,” I answered.

“Maybe we should bring the posters, just in case it's today,” the student said, Ryu...ichi, yes, that was coming back to me. Though I always had a lot of problems with Japanese names for unknown reasons.

“No, the poster session are generally in the middle of the week. Not everybody arrives on the first day so they can't put the poster sessions at the start.”

“I'll still bring mine, just in case,” Christa said before blowing on her coffee.

I could see that Ryuichi was a bit worried the way he glanced between me and her. We both had more experience than he did as it was his first conference.

“Don't worry, if we need them, I'll go pick them up, it's not that far.”
