About Witch Raising.

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

 

“I can assure you that the kitchen hasn't been visited and that there won't be any problem with the food,” he was saying.

Margarethe stood up and walked toward Brownie and Daphy.

“Where is Henri? Weren't you with him?” She asked.

“He was at the front of the train with someone called Oscar,” Brownie said.

Margarethe sight.

“Were they arguing again? About the boulder that stopped the train? Those two can't get together and talk about anything without arguing their way through it,” she said.

“Not really, maybe a little bit,” Brownie said.

Honestly, she didn't remember what the men had said about the boulder, when the demons had showed up, everything else had been up on hold for her.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

People were too busy talking to each other to notice. They just glanced at the girls and went straight back to whispering about the demons. Some of them were scared. Some of them thought it was a joke. Some of them were even looking at the blood the hunter had left on the floor. The blood was everywhere, it wasn't just on Brownie and Daphy, they were both part of the decor.

Why so much blood? It seemed like such a waste. Brownie couldn't understand how that magic worked, where the blood was coming from, how many people had been killed to get it. She didn't want to know so she pushed the thought away and walked passed the wagon restaurant. She didn't want to stop there, she wanted to get to her cabin as soon as possible.

The waiter was trying to keep the few remaining people calm but most of them were freaking out at the blood in the food.

“They control all elements and their horns grow with each kills,” Brownie said.

“Really?” Daphy asked incredulous. Brownie didn't answer.

The bathroom was way too small for two people. She was trying to get the blood away but it stuck to her skin. Her hand were stained, it was as if the blood dug under her skin. It was getting hot in here.

“Let's get out and take a real shower somewhere,” she said pushing Daphy out. She didn't want to pass through the wagons looking like that but she didn't have much choice.

She remembered what Grenadine had said once when she didn't have time to redo her hair after sport class. If you walk quickly, nobody will see. It had made her furious and of course everyone had probably seem her with bad hair entering her next class but in this case it was much worse and she really hoped that nobody was going to notice.

“But why did you kick them out of the train then,” Daphy asked.

“All I know is that there are bad news and they are doing blood magic and when they are around people tend to die,” Brownie said.

“And the guy outside?”

“As far as I have seen, there was three of them and they are demons. They use elemental magic. They are very dangerous.”

“Elementary,” Daphy barfed. She wasn't yawning any more, which meant the spell was gone and everybody was probably already awake and wondering what they were doing on the floor and where she and the hunters had gone. Great!

She had blood stains all over her shirt and Daphy didn't look much better. People were stirring up in the wagon so Brownie pushed Daphy toward the next one and entered the bathroom as quickly as she could.

“We better wash up,” she said.

“What do you think happened?” Daphy asked.

“I don't know,” Brownie answered.

Her aquamarine was still pulsating which meant that the demons were still around. There still was danger. And there was nothing saying that there had only been two human hunters on board.

“So who are those guys?” Daphy asked.

“I'm not sure,” Brownie said.

“Just a little more efforts,” she said. “We are almost there.”

She placed the shoulder of the guy on the stairs and went back up to grab his feet. She took them both and bent him in two pushing on his ass to get him to fall. When he finally went down she almost went with him but managed to hold herself back on the door handle. The man made a loop and fell flat on his face. Brownie got her balance back and let go of the door that clicked and almost closed back on her. The train started moving with a startle.

“I can't believe it,” Daphy said. “It starts now, just when those guys are out? I can't believe our luck.”

“And I can't believe it either and that's what's worrying me,” Brownie said.

She was starting to convinced herself that this was her karma catching up with her and that if she kept going the way she was, she was going to end up dead. She pressed the button to open the door and pulled on the guy but his belt seemed to be stuck in the passage way. She pressed the button again and tried to get the belt out of the door. It was gross and dripping with blood and slippery.

“Damn it,” Brownie said out loud.

She had blood all over her hand. It didn't looking pretty. After a third try, she managed to move the belt and pulled the guy toward the exit. He seemed to be growing heavier on her. Her hand slipped when she dug her fingers in his robe to get a hold of him. Daphy wasn't helping much. She was out of breath. Brownie was going to have to let her rest. The spell was taking it's toll on her.

“Then I'll tell you, just concentrate on the task at hand for now,” Brownie said.

She grabbed the second man by the shoulder and slide him on the floor toward the door. Daphy was yawning and she was getting clumsier and clumsier. Brownie considered the next step, checking to see if the ebony looking demon or one of his friends was appearing anytime near. Her aquamarine was still going crazy which following the circumstances wasn't really helping much. She had no way to judge how far the most immediate danger was.

Once again, this man was stuck in the door between the wagon and the in between wagon platform. Brownie sight with frustration. Her entire body was aching and she was getting hungry. She shouldn't have left the wagon restaurant without finishing lunch but the pull to see the boulder had been too great, and she also wanted to escape Daphy and the cleaning of the table.

Oscar pulled the older professor inside the next wagon as the demon hit the window again. The noise was terrible, but when he saw his prey had moved away, the demon followed.

“What are we going to do?” Daphy said again.

The hunter stirred in his sleep as if he was waking up.

“Hey, Duck, keep the spell up,” Brownie said. “We just keep moving, this guy needs to get out.”

Daphy didn't answer and Brownie shook her.

“Snap out of it, don't go make everything visible on me now. I need you,” Brownie said.

That was another thing hard to admit but Daphy's magic right now was the only thing that had kept the demons away from them. If he had seen the hunter he sure would have stuck around and found them.

“Keep the spell going and get the guy out and then?” Daphy asked.

He wasn't afraid and that wasn't good. Brownie was sure he was intelligent enough to notice that the wings weren't a costume because a costume wouldn't be able to make the demon fly. But she didn't have time to keep going with her reflection. The demon hit the window horn first. The wagon shook but the window didn't shatter.

“What are we going to do?” Daphy whispered.

She was scared and finally Henry was scared too. “Girls you have to come with us,” he said as Oscar pulled him back toward the wagon where they came from.

“They can't be seen,” Oscar said looking at Brownie who nodded. “We are putting them in danger by staying here.”

Maybe it would be better for Daphy to just fall asleep and wait with everyone else until Brownie figure out a way to fix the situation but there was no way she could managed to carry the body on her own.

The door of the wagon opened and professor Fliggerty and Oscar entered the door.

“What are you two girls doing on the floor?” Henry asked.

Brownie pointed at the window.

Oscar stopped and pulled Henri when he saw the demon.

“Another one of those,” Henri said looking straight at the demon.

“What are we going to do?” Daphy said in Brownie's hand looking at her.

Brownie place a finger on her lips.

“Don't move,” she mouthed silently.

All they could do was wait and then get back to the plan. At least the demon was on the wrong side of the train, from where he flew, he couldn't see the door. Daphy yawned and Bronwie removed her hand from in front her mouth. Daphy had to keep yawning for the hunters to stay asleep and invisible but at the same time it was noisy. Brownie hopped that the demon wouldn't hear her through the open door and figure out it was opened.

The demon moved to the next window. Daphy yawned even more.

“Are you going to be ok?” Brownie asked whispering.

“I don't know, I never held the spell that long while being awake walking around,” she said.

There was a demon at the window just behind her. Brownie was looking straight at him hoping that he couldn't see the half of the hunter body her amulet was likely not covering.

“What?” Daphy started but Brownie put her hand quickly on her mouth and then pointed at the window.

Daphy turned around slowly.

The demon had ebony skin, deep dark eyes which only little part of white almost glowing in the sun. He had huge horns marking for his numerous kills. His wings were blue. He was happy to be here, and they were flapping in his back slowly, helping him to maintain his balance in the air. Brownie had never seen a demon like him before but one thing she knew just looking at him was she didn't want him to catch her.
