Thursday Fiction 283: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Not really," I said.
Alex sight. He was obviously confused but I didn't want to discuss Amy's story with him.
"So we go to class and finish recording your trips during lunch break? We have two hours today."
"Yes, but actually, something new came up," I said. "I talked to her, one of my other self, she was having a conversation with me in her head."
"And how does that worked?"
"I have no idea really," I said.
"Are you sure you weren't dreaming and that was an effect of discussing it with me?"
"I already ruled that out," I said.
"How?"
"I went back to the place where I felt the feelings of the other me the more strongly," I said. "She was in great distress and I think that might actually help break the barrier between us or something."
"I'm not sure how emotions could control the atomic world, really I'm not convinced," Alex said.
"Because they are waves," I said. "Have you ever heard the terms: a wave of anger passed through the crowd or a wave of joy filled my body?"
"Yes but..."
"No buts, they are waves, if you look at the brain during intense emotion it emits waves, like alpha waves or delta waves or I don't know for sure because I'm not there yet in the neuroscience class but the brain emits waves. So if her brain was emitting some sort of waves, they could communicate with my brain here," I said.

Thursday Fiction 282: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Do you know where we can check the easiness of university degree on a national level?" I asked.
"I don't think that exist," Alex answered.
"I'm sure it exist somewhere, " I said, wondering at the same time if Amy had been faking her sources.
"How would you classify that? By the achievement level, imagine comparing physics and history. They have almost no classes, like four a week which totally doesn't call for commitment so it's easy not to show up. If we are on campus early morning, it's a lot easier to stay there and go to classes. Then in the end it depends how much you want to work and get your degree. I don't think it has anything to do with the difficulty level if there is one. Some people always strive at history but can't even equalize a basic chemical equation and same, I can take care of a math problem and I'd rather do it than memorize the chronology of the French Kings," Alex said.
He had to be right. There was no way to quantify and compare how easy a degree was. For me too history would have been hell, and not for dragging myself to classes, just the all taking care about other people's life, especially dead people.
"So what did Billy say?" Alex asked.
"That I'm good with the dead cat that's alive and he'll take care of the dead people who are really dead," I said.
"You wanted to go into history?"

Thursday Fiction 281: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last time.

"Some people really are full f shit aren't they?"
Billy was standing at his door. We had had this conversation just in from of his room.
"People tell me every day that history is so damn easy," he continues. "Still we have the same amount of drop out after the same semester as anyone else. If physics is so damn easy, what isn't everyone doing? Go figure. Personally, I'll rather spend my time with really dead people than to try and see if the cat's dead or not, know what I mean."
He scratched his messy and oily hair.
"Thank you Billy," I said.
"I better go get a shower, they put a class at 11am, who the hell can get up this early."
I moved aside and he closed his door not bothering to even lock it and walked barefoot through the corridor carrying a small plastic bag and a towel.
"So you spent the night at Billy's, I didn't know he was your type," Alex said.
It was the second time that guys sneaked on me today without me seeing or hearing them arrive and it was not my favorite thing.
"He said something interesting," I answered not letting Alex's remark about my attraction for Billy drift one.
"Really," Alex said.

Thursday Fiction 280: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Amy, wait!"

Amy didn't come for breakfast and I didn't think she would be up for class after coming home so late last night. She was ahead of me in the corridor and she was fast.

"What do you want?"

"I think we need to talk," I said hesitantly.

"I said everything I wanted last night, I don't want to talk about it anymore."

"I'm just not convince," I said.

She glared at me and just that look should have been enough to convince me but I was in a sort of denial.

"I don't think you could pull it of," I said.

"Excuse me?"

"I don't think you could have a double life, be nice to me all the time and study with me almost every day while continuously be with Tamara and preparing to cheat on your exam as if it was the most natural things to do. You were surrounded by me and Alex and we were always..."

"Are you for real?" she interrupted me. "There is nothing in common between my classes and yours. Yours is a joke, you might spend a lot more hours in classes than I do, fine, i grand you that but it's the easier degree in this university. Damn, it's the easier degree in the entire country. I bet anyone could pass those classes just by showing up in classes without bothering to do anything else. There is nothing hard in what you are learning."

I knew she was lying, but she was hitting on my proud because I had been studying like mad and she had already a way out but she was making it sound like she was the one who had it hard.

"It's statistical Freddy, your degree is the easiest you can get, go check it by yourself if you don't believe me."

And with that she walked away. I was left crushed. If she really meant that, if she really believed that, was it my fault if she had turned bad? If I had been a biology student showing her the example, then maybe none of that would have happen but at the same time, I couldn't possibly change who I was to please her.

Thursday Fiction 279: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

I didn't have time to hear what she said. The next thing I heard was a honking from the street nearby. The light from the cars were reaching the ceiling and passing like ghosts from the opening the curtains didn't cover. I was back in my room with a strange feeling. I had talked to my other self. She was me but at the same time she was so different than me. I didn't understand how this could happen, I didn't understand how I was able to talk to her.
I reached the desk and turned on the lamp. I needed to write it all down. My diaries were in a mess from the record we had been entering in the computer. I was afraid, afraid that it was all a dream, something I created to cope with the black out and the way my mother had been reacting to them. I was afraid that I was now able to communicate with my other self because I had talked about it with Alex.
There didn't seem to be anything special in that particular universe. I had never doubted myself before. I had known from childhood that those trips were trips and not just dreams but I started to think it was convenient to go traveling through Asia while the other kids were on school trip. It was convenient to save Amy just before meeting her. Before meeting her, not after, I couldn't know, entropy low and time arrow that can't be reverse. Logic would want everything I saw to be different universes. I took a deep breathe and excelled slowly. I needed to trust myself. The trip with Amy was my proof even if my only one and I needed to cling at it until I got something else. The new fact was, I could talk to this version of me, the old fact was, I never really tried to talk to any version of me before except Michelle on the spaceship. Now why was it easier to talk to this one. What was so special about her?

Thursday Fiction 278: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.
Let's start right where we left off last week.

"You're going to be alright," I said in my head, or more exactly in her head. "You have been through a lot and you are the only one who can help yourself. She is gone, she won't hurt you for now, it's the moment when you decide to be strong."
"But I can't talk to her the way you do, I can't escape," My other self said.
She could hear me and I could hear her, that was new and that was somehow beautiful.
"But you did it, it was your voice, it was you saying it, I just voiced what you wouldn't let yourself say," I said.
There were things I wouldn't say to my mother either, terrible things. She didn't have to say it all, she just had to say enough to stay safe.
"Why did you say I'll see the psychologist?" She asked.
"Because you need it to treat your emotional abuse," I said.
"Emotional abuse? That's what it is? That's what she has been doing to me? I read about it. I looked for answered but I could never place myself there. I could never quite be sure which part was normal interaction and which part was not. I could ever figure out which part made up and all in my head and what was real," she said.
"I never though about it this way," I said. "I guess you need to talk about it all, if you have a question, you ask the doctor and he will help."
"She'll be back and she won't be happy," my other self said. "Would you stay with me? I called you many time but you never came until now."
"I don't decide where I go but you need to know that I am you, I am just another part of you."
"But you're so strong and you seem to know everything so much better," she said.
"That's not true, it was just what you needed, you are the one who really made the decision," I said.
"Thank..."

Thursday Fiction 277: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Image by Colin Behrens from Pixabay
Let's start right where we left off last week.

The nurse looked at me, as if intrigued and sat on the edge of the bed.
"What did she do to you? Did she hit you?"
"No," I said. I wasn't sure but I had no prove of anything, I didn't even know if the marks on my other self's body were from the fire or from something else. "She just talks," I said after a pause.
"I think you might need to go and see one of our psychologist," the nurse said. "I know you already have to cope with the fire and so you are already seeing one but I think you might need a little extra to deal with your mother. How would you like I get someone for her too?"
She won't go, she never wanted to go. The thoughts hit me so strongly that I had to close my eyes.
"I'll take them but don't tell my mother about it," I said.
My other self seemed to relax.
"Alright, I think you can decide about what your mother should know later," the nurse said. "Are you going to be alright now?"
"Yes," I said.
She stood up and left. I rolled myself in a ball under my blanket, my knees high on my chest. I never did that before but it seems that my body was calling for it. I wondered if I could speak to my other self but thoughts that weren't mine came to my ears.
"I know you're here, I feel different, I can hear the things you said, the way you call me your other self. My name is Frederique and I know it's crazy to hear voices in my head and I don't really want you here all the time but I think I need to say thank you for making her go away. I can't make her go away myself. I can't make her stop talking to me and I don't want to hear her anymore."

Thursday Fiction 276: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

"How dare you talk to me like that? Is it what they teach you at university? To be disrespectful to your parents?"
"Mum, shut up and leave. I don't want you here."
I grabbed for the button to call a nurse. She wouldn't shut up but I tried to ignore her talking. That wasn't really my doing though, it was more a reflex my other selves seemed to have developed over time. Her talking had become just a buzz, noise but I could still hear it, the blaming, the everything that was wrong with me. I was the only one fainting that I was aware of, my other self didn't faint or that would have killed my theory. I wonder what was wrong with this version of me that got her mother to behave like this.
The nurse arrived. Her mother smiled and said that I might be tired.
"I don't want her here, please," I said to the nurse.
"I'll be back later, sweety," her mother said. It was just an act, it made me sick in the stomach to see her smile and be polite and be so nice talking about me to the nurse.
"Don't be," I said.
It was difficult to be strong in this other self's body. She seemed broken. Her will was so lost that it was even hard for me to speak and stand up for her. I don't think I had ever experienced that much of one of my other self's feelings and that wasn't the best ever.
The nurse got my mother out and came back for me, for my other self.
"Are you alright?" The nurse said.
"Please don't let her come in again," I said.

Thursday Fiction 275: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
Let's start right where we left off last week.

The smell of antiseptic was the first thing I noticed. I was once again back to the hospital. I blinked three time to make sure I was in a different universe. I didn't think anyone could break in my room to get me to the hospital but I needed to be sure. I wasn't in my pajama and there was no brain scan around. I had definitely to be in one of my other selves body but I felt disoriented. I looked around to see that I was still in the same room where I had left this version of me again and my mother was sitting. I felt the distress in my other selves body as her mother's word reached me.
"It was all your fault wasn't it, the fire, I told that to the policeman and the fireman and I'll tell anyone who asks me. You can't take care of yourself. What happened? You left the oily pan near the fire after cooking? Or did you put bread in the microwave? I told you it's always under a minute, you can't trust their clock, you have to warm things one minute at a time and reset the machine," my mother said.
Anxiety rushed through me.
"Mum," I said trying to keep the voice of my other self even.
Her mother smiled at me.
"What is it sweety? I'll take you home soon and..."
"Shut up!" I said.
She looked shocked as if I had slapped her across the face.
I remembered my thought in the kitchen when that I was messing up my other selves life but I couldn't take it anymore and my other self was about to have a nervous break down. I could feel it all over my body and I realized I had never been so skinny in any universe. I was here because of my other self's anxiety. My anxiety over Amy not being around anymore because of Tamara was new, but her anxiety was not and it had reached for mine and two universes were collapsing into one.

Thursday Fiction 274: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Image by Alex Myers from Pixabay
Let's start right where we left off last week.

It took me forever to get ready for bed and I knew it was foolish to delay the inevitable. I could have black out standing, hit my head on the corner of the desk and bleed to death just because I was waiting for Amy to call me.
As I brushed my teeth missing the back one and getting the front one until my gum bleed, I decided I had waited for her enough and that she would have to deal with whatever her problem was by herself.
The worse part was that I felt like my mother, controlling, and freaking out because I didn't have control over everything around anymore. I wondered if I had been making Amy feel as claustrophobic as my mother had made me. All the reading and studying was my idea and my way of doing things, the only thing she actually said she wanted was the extra classes and space dinosaurs and the salsa classes she was giving up on.
Then I wondered if she was giving up on the astrobiology too. Damn it! I couldn't help myself from thinking about her and I hated it because there was still nothing I could do about it. I couldn't undo the past and do something different in it.
I finally went to bed and fell asleep before she came back. I didn't notice falling asleep. I might have been really tired. Amy woke me up giggling with Tamara in the corridor and taking forever to open her door. People were coming back at anytime of the night on Thursday, just it had never been Amy before. I took a deep breathe, relieved that she was back at least that was one thing less to worry about.

Thursday Fiction 273: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

We started after dinner. It was already 10pm and I didn't even have the energy or the motivation to go through it. I was worried about Amy, but going through my diaries was a way to keep me busy and keep me from sleeping or blacking out in case Amy would call.
I read the entries I thought were relevant like the time they occurred, how long they lasted and where I was taken while Alex entered the data's in his computer. We had decided to go through the brain scans later once we were done with this. Going through it, I couldn't see any patterns, it was just refreshing my memories about the different world I had visited since I started writing the diary. I saw that I had been visiting the spaceship's world a couple of time as a kid but only for a short time and of course never as the captain. My parents also seemed happy there.
It was a strange sensation to revisit my life with Alex. He didn't ask questions. He didn't say much. I wonder if it was concentration or if he had something else on his mind. We decided to call it a night around 3am. We didn't even go half way through but I couldn't concentrate any longer.
Amy was still not back from the party, otherwise we would sure have heard her. I was certain to black out as soon as my head was to hit the pillow but I didn't tell Alex about it. If I was to be out for five hours again I didn't want to have him around to witness it. It was already embarrassing enough to have been to the hospital with him today and make him miss classes for me.

Thursday Fiction 272: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
Let's start right where we left off last week.

I carried the plates to my room and Alex carried the drinks. We crossed Tamara and Amy in the corridor, they were on the way out. It was too late for any party I knew of and I couldn't help myself and worried about Amy. I wondered how I had missed that. I wonder if two universes didn't collapse together, one where I was still me and Amy was still my friend and one where I hadn't saved her and she had been with Tamara. Then the probability of the bad deal had been higher and Amy and the rest of the people around had that memory while I had the previous one because inside of me it was stronger. I took a deep breath. This was insane, this was my reality even if right this moment with her away with Tamara it sucked.
"Don't worry about her, "Alex said. "Remember the ass kick in the other universe"
I laughed half heartedly at the joke. He opened the door for me and I put the plates on my desk. Then cleaned away the books I had left there in the morning.
"Anything could happen to her, and she is pretty defenseless as far as girl goes," I said.
"You would be surprised. I saw my delicate sister kick a guy in the groin when she was thirteen."
"Alex, when she was thirteen she was probably a totally different person. It looks bad to kick people when you're eighteen," I said.
Alex laughed.
"If a guy try something funny you didn't like would you kick him?"
I didn't know what was going on between Alex and all the kicking tonight. He seemed pretty into it as if it was the solution to everything regarding Amy. I didn't thing it wasn't funny anymore, I didn't know, I never kicked anyone, I didn't know if I could even figure out how to do it but on the other hand Amy knew how apparently.
"Probably," I said.
"She'll be fine, I promise," Alex said.
But that wasn't something he could promise for real, that was just words and Amy was out of touch. I put my phone next to my plate to make sure I would hear it ring if she called me.

Thursday Fiction 271: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Sure I would love to take over Michelle's body though, if she wasn't two dimensional," Billy said.
Alex laughed at the joke and wash the pans. I couldn't wait to be out of here. The big thing is when you spend half of your time at the hospital and the rest sitting in classes because you are not allowed to the play-ground with the other kids that doesn't really let you develop social skills. I had more social skills with the temporary people in the universes I occasionally visited than in this one. I didn't know how to deal with people like Billy.
"Have fun while I'm slaving away on Polish history," Billy said walking out with his microwaved pizza.
"Sure we will," Alex answered.
He turned to me and smiled.
"You know he won't eat you, you look totally flushed," he said laughing.
"It's not funny, I don't know what to say to him, ever," I answered.
There were many people around here and they tend to come and chat in the kitchen and I would wait in my room and hide to go to the kitchen unless Amy or Alex were with me. I was a hopeless case.
"What's the last history book you read," Alex said.
"I don't think I ever read one unless you count 1421 and Empress Orchid," I said.
"Here you go, you have about the same level as Billy then," Alex said.
"But Polish history?"
"Is what he should be reading but he'll probably just make up something about Marie Curie and Chopin? I've been to his room a couple of time, he has a list of to read books pined to the closet door and only one crossed on it, I never saw a single book in there but he has a lot of empty pizza box and beers."
"Then what am I supposed to say to him?"
"Show him you are having a lot of fun, he likes that and he hates anime," Alex said.
"So when you asked if he wanted to watch, you knew," I said opening big eyes.
"We have more important things to do, tonight is the night when we become statistic experts on parallel worlds and I'm not sharing that with anyone else but you."

Thursday Fiction 270: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Image by Thomas Budach from Pixabay
Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Wait if, the universe collapse when I get there, it means it has to be the same and that I will find the hidden thing, or my other self might also hid it in another universe for some reason. It's only 50 percent chance, hide it or not hide it," I said.
Alex scratched his head as if he was thinking hard and flipped the fishes which were getting slightly over cooked in the pan.
"The other thing is," I said taking the water out of the pasta. "The girls in the spaceships. The pilots, they can recognize me. They know when I take over Michelle's body."
"Sounds interesting!"
One of the neighbor was at the door. The history student who always moved around here in his sweet pants no matter the time of the day.
"Hi billy," Alex said, "what's up?"
"Who is Michelle?"
"A girl from a new animation series I'm watching, you wanna join? We'll be watching while eating," Alex said.
I thought my heart was going to stop. I had no intention on watching any animation tonight especially not with Billy around.
"I don't do junk, no time, tones of books to read, you science students got it easy with you little exercise sheets," Billy said.
He opened his fridge and pulled out half a pizza on a card board and put it in the microwave.
"Yeah, you guys can't ever relax," Alex said wicking at me.
I shared the pasta on the plates and Alex added the fish sticks.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Not really consciously I guess," I said. "But if I get all the memory of my other self and they somehow get mine wouldn't that be super confusing? Or impossible to store in my brain?"
"Well there is a theory that talks about the arrow of time. That in some parallel universe it would go from the future to the past instead of from the past to the future. This way I would imagine that you can also have reversal of entropy as well," Alex said.
"So that instead of universes differentiating themselves to infinity, having universes that fight against chaos," I said.
"Exactly, then they collapse together. It might even be that every single of your trip is due to one of those collapses and that every time you have one the universe link themselves together so the memory should be there. In the end I don't think any human ever reached full storage capability, our brain has a different way to deal with those things than computer," Alex said.
It was amazing to talk to him because he could push my understanding of my travel in new directions just my mentioning things.
"But if that's the case, it might even be that I never go to the same universe twice, just to very similar one which have collapse back together," I said.
"That could be. You should test it, like hide something in one universe and see if it's still there the next time you go back. I would think that because you actually go to the same looking universe multiple time..."

Thursday Fiction 268: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

He put the pan over the fire and fried the fish sticks and the quarter of tomatoes.
"You can't blame yourself for everything that happens to everybody in every single universe, do you know how many people that is?" Alex said.
"I'm just thinking that maybe I could do better," I said. "It's freaking me out to have such a huge influence on other people's life and I can't help it but think they might hate me for it."
"You have really zero communication with your other selves?" Alex said.
"Sometimes I think I hear their thoughts but it's always vague. I generally feel their strong feelings, sometimes on top of mine, if they are happy or scared," I said.
"You never tried to give them a message to read after you left or something?" Alex asked.
"I wrote something for Michelle. That's my name on the spaceship about some research. But that's about it, I'm not sure how much she got out of it. I'm not even sure where she goes when I'm taking over her body," I said.
"It would be nice to know," Alex said.
"According to my dad, in the moment when I think Michelle's dad is taking over, he witnessed everything but can't move or talk or anything."
"That sounds more like a split personality than a parallel universe problem," Alex said. "The way I see it would be that the two consciousness actually fuse as one."
"But I don't have the memories," I said.
"Yes, that's another problem, but are you sure? Did you try to recall the memories?"

Thursday Fiction 267: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Alex asked.
"I messed up everything," I said tears coming to my eyes.
"It's not your fault," Alex said.
"I'm not talking about Amy, I'm talking about my trips. Every time I black out, I mess up my other selves life, I make decision for them, without even consulting them."
"The way I see it, when you are over there, you have no control over where you go and all you can do is act the best you can to help people. You don't go there and mess up things on purpose. You put Amy in charge of that thing because you thought it was the right thing to do and I don't think anyone can ever blame you for that. Sometimes, I do things and I say things and then I regret because I didn't think about the consequences enough. I'm sure I could have been a better brother and I'm sure I could go there and kick Tamara's sorry ass out of Amy's room but what is the best choice? I'll never know because I can kick her ass and Amy will never talk to me again and might or not go back to Tamara behind my back. Or I can do nothing and let things happen and Amy live through her own poor choice. There is never just one answer, there are only multiple answer and the best answer is a mix of everything. Now, if you ask me I'm happy to know I'm here with you while some other me in another universe is kicking Tamara so hard she won't be able to sit for a week," Alex said laughing.
The all kicking ass sounded pretty funny.
