About Harajuku Kiss

At times, life can be so depressing. She is walking her usual recovery tour in Harajuku, finishing with a crepe, trying to forget that her boyfriend dumped her once again for the week-end... When the unthinkable happens... A boy stops in front of her in the street and kisses her, in to discover more about him, she is dragged into a dangerous game of mystery. A biologist has been murdered and a deadly virus is on the loose. First suspect: the mysterious Harajuku's stranger.

Here is the snippet for this week (Check out the previous snippet here

The elevator stopped in the fifth floor underground for few seconds. It was always stopping there for no reason. Kaji had never stepped out at that floor or any other floors in the almost full year he had been working for the company, he had just gone down straight to Hell. The door opened to a dark corridor, the same as his minus the light and with a strong smell of ammonium. He was still happy not to work here, the smell would have given him a headache if he had stayed longer. Once again, nobody appeared and Kaji pressed the button to close the door without bothering to look outside, this gesture had become an habit.

The first time they had taken him there, he had found it comical.

“Do you know that there are seven floors up to Heaven and seven floors down to Hell? Going down to the eight floor, you must be leading me to some different sort of Hell,” he had said.

And he had laughed and they had laughed as well. It seemed like a funny joke to make at the time, something to create a nice atmosphere between him and his employers, but it wasn’t funny anymore.

Five months earlier

Only few lights lit the façade half way to the top. Kaji looked at the company building wondering how it would feel to work up there, to have a view over the city when his eyes would get tired of staring at the computer screen, how it would feel to work in sunshine instead of electrical lights. He sighed and hurried his steps toward the side door. He had never entered through the front door. His laboratory was just not a part of the company accessible through the main entrance. They had said it was because the research he would be doing was more important and because they didn’t want anyone to be disturbing his team. It was something too secret, with high budget and high priorities, something they couldn’t risk a foreign team to figure out. He was bound by secrecy and entering through the side door was part of secret keeping.

He did his part and then was asked to add up everything. And at that moment, his bosses at the company asked more and more time from him. The men wouldn’t leave him alone for lunch or dinner as if they suspected him to talk about his research to some outsiders despite the fact that he was under contract of secrecy. They seemed to be suspicious of everything he did, kept on watching him closely, keeping him away from anyone else at the company, isolating him but saying that they just wanted to meet with the upcoming dead line. Kaji had felt too much pressure and stress to be able to resist them, he couldn’t do anything else than working to please them. He couldn’t think about anything else than the product to be finalised and delivered to the clients. He knew it was an important part of the solution for a vaccine. Still, he couldn’t figure out what it would be used for until one night.

Kaji was asking Seiji to come back from Australia as soon as he could to help him dispose of his research properly before it was used against the public. I wondered what company he was working for, there was no indication about it’s location in the Police folder which gave Kaji and his family whereabouts. And who was able to hire people under-cover to do some secret research like that.

The fact was nothing lead to Kaji or Seiji. The research was described as well as the research team but with no names or address. Kaji seemed frightened for his life. He was saying that he didn’t know what he was doing when he started he was just studying molecules. In a way, he had been a little part of the chain unable to see the greater picture and leave alone to see where everything was leading.

I walked out of the bathroom with my pyjamas on and decided to cook something for my poor stomach which had been neglected for almost the entire day. Vegetables and rice didn’t sound so appealing at first, after working that hard I needed sugar to boost up my serotonin level. I cooked them anyway. I also needed a real meal. I ate slowly reading my translation of the letter. Kaji was facing something incredible, as a scientist. He had to choose, between his research and his ethics. At least, this was something that couldn’t possibly happen to me.

That was one of the reasons why I didn’t want to leave university. I wanted to be able to do the research I wanted at a rhythm that suited me. Company work was way too troublesome for someone like me. I always wondered what it was really like though, making a virus sounded pretty exciting in movies, or a least when spies were trying to recover and destroy it. But it was not funny.

Dewey's 24 hours readathon (bouquinerie, and a bit of NaNoWriMo) with video

This weekend was the Dewey's 24 hours readathon. During the readathon I planned to read a lot of books. Of course I didn't manage to read that much.
The readathon normally takes place between 8am est on Saturday to 8am est of Sunday. However, that makes it 9pm in Japan. So that mean I should have been reading all Sunday.
The thing is, this Sunday was the 4th of the month, which means that it's Bouquinerie Sunday and I really wanted to go since I haven't been since June.
Then there was also my Sunday Write-in which ended up being a NaNo prep write-in... (more about that in the next video). So I didn't quite read as much as expected.
On a good day, (not during a readathon) I can still manage to read this much.

 Here is the video

Book Review: A Song of Smoke and Fire by Megan Linski (with video)

Today I'm reviewing "A Song of Smoke and Fire" by Megan Linski.
This is the first book of her new series "Song of Dragonfire".
I got it as an ARC before the release but only got into reading it now.
It's a really nice story, though predictable. It has a lot of real element like the setting in Kraków, Poland.
You can see more about the setting and Kraków here on my blog post: Europe tour Interail 2006 : Kraków and the dragon hunting
So it takes roots in Polish folklore and at the same time it has other fantasy and fairy tales ingredient.
The predictable part for me was the love story though there are some twists to get there and the journey time of thing.
It was an entertaining read.

Book Review: Torture (Angels & Demons Book 2) by Megan Linski (with video)

Today, I'm reviewing and ARC copy of Torture by Megan Linski.
Torture is the second book in the Angels and Demons series.
I was a bit apprehensive about reading it because I actually didn't quite like the first book as much as I wanted in a very unexpected way.
I enjoyed the first 60% of Torrent, which is the first book, and then I got totally annoyed with a lot of crappy unrealistic details.
Fortunately, Torture is way better than Torrent in a lot of ways going from the main character building, to the characters interaction.
The plot was also better define, especially with the interaction with the antagonist. After "A stranger in the house" this was really an awesome read.

This video may contains spoilers of Torture and Torrent.

A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena (Book Review) #Spookathon #Readathon

Today, I'm reviewing: A Stranger in the House which was the read along book for #Spookathon.
This book is extremely poorly written with a lot of very annoying things.
First, the POVs are all over the place. You keep on jumping from one character to the next without real definition or break except a paragraph break and the paragraph can be very unrelated even in the same chapter.
Then you have the obvious lack of research and realism about the car accident's consequences on the main character's body which basically is a turning point in the story.
A lot of the characters body motion or action aren't realistic either and the prose tend to be repetitive especially with Tom.
And the list could go on...

So I had a lot of problem with reading this book since for the first 10 chapters all I could see was everything that was "wrong" in it. Then after that the plot start showing a bit better. So many my attention to the annoying detail faded or maybe the writing got better, I'm not sure. For a thriller, it was kind of predictable. But I guess the story is ok and there are some plot twists.
Then there is Tom. I think that I have never seen such a crappy character taking that much of attention. It was said that he was supposed to be on his wife side when all hell breaks lose and people think she is lying well, he wasn't. Tom is probably the worse husband a woman can get, like really and he is self absorbed, his worry about his wife going to jail is what that's going to do to him, after all he cheat on her on her first night there, then again. And she still manage to forgive him, like what the fuck, you're not even married to the idiot get your money girl and run, leave him to Brigit, seriously they deserve each other.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (Book Review) #Spookathon #Readathon (with video)

The Girl on the Train is the last book that I read in full for #Spookathon
I had already watched the movie so I definitely had to read the book. There are a bit of differences but the movie actually follow the plot really well.

This book has three different POV in the first person in different chapters. So you always know who you are with. You follow three women on two different time line.

Rachel, the girl on the train, is an alchoolic, depressive, divorcé who is obsessed with her ex-husband and like to look at a house while on the train because she imagine the life of the people living in it.

Megan, is also depressed because she has a secret too heavy to carry. She is the type of hyperactive depressed person, sort of ation junky who would do anything not to think about the ghosts in her past. Basically, Megan and Rachel are exact opposite. One long for the past, the other can't avoid it enough.

Then there is very boring Anna who is like a version of who Rachel used to be and would have been if her life had turned out as expected.

Nightmare Realisation by Carol Riggs (Book Review) #Spookathon (with video)

Today, I have for you the first review of Spookathon: Junction 2020 Nightmare Realisation.
This book is the second book in the series. I read it as an ARC but it's actually out now so you can go and grab it here.

In Junction 2020 a group of five adolescent go through a portal made to triangle to reach what is called a landscape.
The landscape is build of the nightmare and favorite things of one of them.
In this book, we are in Tony's landscape so we learn about Tony's past, his likes and dislike and the reasons behind all of his nightmare.
At the same time, our little group of friends, Mainworlders, also have to fight against the Shifters, people jumping from landscape to landscapes to catch the Mainworlders and get out of the landscape with them.
Tony is a very particular character because all of his fears are actually lethal which makes this landscape very dangerous. He is very different from Marie in multiple ways, including the fact that he is not really as brave and as smart. This book is interesting because it pushes the understanding of the landscape and Shifters a lot further.
It was an interesting read.

Looking For Alaska by John Green (Book Review) Turtles all the Way Down Countdown 1/4 (with video)

As you might now, Turtles all the Way Down, John Green's new book is coming out on the 10th of October so I decided to have a Countdown review of all of John Green's book (The one that are solo written) just before the book comes out. I'll probably not get my book on the 10th but hopefully I'll have it soon enough and be able to review it too.

So I'm starting this Countdown with a review of Looking for Alaska which is by far my favorite of John Green's books and the first I ever read. I read it in a couple of hours. Actually, I was waiting for a friend to get out of class when I read it so I was interrupted but went back to it as soon as I could.
This book is mind-blowingly good. I loved all the characters, they looked so real to me and the story was a lot of fun. I mean yes, it's just teens trying not to be bored but it's just so funny. This book contains a count down which sort of inspired me to do my own Countdown reviews. The main character's little thing is to memorise famous "last words" so it's sort of funny but also very fitting with the story.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie (Book Review) (with video)

Today, I'm reviewing "The Murder of Roge Ackroyd" by Agatha Christie.
This is one of the Agatha Christie's book that I hadn't read yet. I'm not really sure how many more books from her I have left to read since I would have to compare the French and English titles as I read a lot of them in French.
This book is the fourth book in the Hercule Poirot series. You can read the Hercule Poirot book in non particular order though as they aren't really linked together since Poirot investigates different murders in different settings.
I had trouble to read this books. I started multiple times but I never actually managed to finish it until now. And I can understand why it is called the best Agatha Christie's book even though there are a lot that I really like.
It is on this list:

Hercule Poirot is Agatha's Christie's famous detective. He is Belgian so sometimes speaks words in French or has a weird English phrasing. People around him always tend to underestimate him even if he is pretty famous for solving cases. They all think he is a bit bizarre in the way he acts and speak which doesn't lead them to take him seriously but of course he doesn't care much because he knows his own abilities.
The story is pretty mind blowing. I mean for most of the book it's just a normal Agatha Christie story with Poirot going around gathering clues and talking to peole in the usual way. Though, when he finally tell you who the murderer is, it's totally over the top and you never could have guessed. In other Agatha Christie's book you can't get either but at least, you suspected. In this one, you can't even suspect. It's really amazing and you should just go and read it.

Vlog #81 Edogawabashi and Akihabara: Books, dolls and Kachapon

Today, I went to Edogawabashi for the Bouquinerie Solidaire which is a charity book sale, mostly in French. I wanted to go there for a while but I actually missed the first time because of the rain and then forgot about it until I discovered an email this morning.
I managed to find a few books. If I can read them all by the end of next month, I'll go back to the event since it's held every 4th Sunday of the month.

Then I went to the Azone store in Akihabara. They have transferred the Kikipop festival dolls over there. And they have a few more so I wanted to take a look. I brought dolls with me to take pictures, just in case they had the dinner set up again but they didn't.
I also took pictures of the rest of the display. They still have some of the Otogi no Kuni excutes, as well as the new release with swapped outfit, and the Sahra's a la mode in the otogi no kuni outfit on display. Since I hadn't seen them, that was really nice.

Then I decided to go to the Volks store on floor above. I don't go there very often because normally you can't take pictures. They have changed the entire set up of the store and I was able to take pictures and film there. It was fantastic. They have a lot more dolls than before too and more space to take pictures of your own dolls. It's not called the Volks store anymore, it's called Doll point and it's for having fun on top of buying doll stuff. True it was fun.

I also checked out other store so you can see some pullip footage. And I bought some kachapon which I open at the end of the vlog video.

Here is the full vlog
