Tuesday Cinema: The Imitation Game

book cover instead of movie poster

Hello everyone and welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema. This week we are watching a war movie without much battle scene: The Imitaion Game.

The story: Genius mathematician Alan Turing is different. He doesn't have that little thing that allow people to communicate with enigma. He doesn't understand why people say things when they mean something else, but he likes puzzles and that leads him to become an expert in cryptography. He is recruited by the MI6 to help with decoding German messages encrypted by the Enigma machine, but while everyone is trying to break the code by trying one combination after the next, Alan wants to build a machine, Christopher, to break them all.

My feelings: I think this was a good story. The main character has no idea what people are talking about most of the time. He doesn't get the nuances unless he gives them all his attention. I had to think a bit to get the "lunch" part, I was "what's wrong with the dialogues" when it was actually perfect. I like how he is fixed on a goal and ready to do anything to achieve it, even get out of his isolation. Another great thing about this movie is how he doesn't seem to get the prejudice toward women and invite Joan to take the test, only interested in her brain and later her insight on the cryptography problem, while on the other hand he ends up discredited for being homosexual.

Quote: "Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine"

Tuesday Cinema: Noah

It's time for a new Tuesday Cinema, this week's movie is a biblical movie to give you something to think about before Easter's weekend: Noah. It's pretty straight forward this time as it comes from the bible so there is no real surprise with the story.

The story: Noah has a dream that the world is going to be floated, he doesn't really know what to do about it so he goes to seek advices from his grandfather, who is very old and wise and can do some pretty cool magic. On the way he rescues a little girl. Then he decides to build an Arch for his family, and all the animals of the creation and he is helped by the Watchers who god has transform into huge stone giant when they disobeyed him. Following the animals, the rest of humankind shows up at the Arch is looking for trouble. At the same time, Noah decides that the human race should be lead to extinction.

My feelings: I had a bit of trouble with this movie. It was hard to actually get into the emotional part of it and to bind with the main character. The best characters were Han and Ila because they were more feeling driven than duty driven. Even though Noah was to do the right thing there was no real guidance from god for him. He had the dream, of course, and saw images, but it was his duty to interpret it and to decide what he wanted out of it. It was not really god's choice of God's will, it was all Noah's. I think that part at least was great, no matter what you do in life, no matter how close to god you seem to be, it's never his will or his choice or him who makes people do anything but people who decide to give their own unique interpretation of the words and images. We are not puppets, we have free will and Noah also did. Hiding behind God is for coward who don't want to take full responsibility for their actions.

Tuesday Cinema: What if

Welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema. The movie for this week is a romantic comedy with Daniel Radcliffe. At first I wanted to watch a scary movie, then I saw Daniel Radcliffe was in one and then I chicken out seeing I was alone at home and picked his romantic comedy instead. I don't regret, I'll definitely get the scary one some day, just not for this post.

The story: Wallace is the typical loser, he has a poor job, dropped out of MED school and lives with his sister. One day at his friend's party he meets Chantry who is everything he ever wanted in a girl, except that she has a boyfriend, a super cool, awesome, talented, smart, with a nice job boyfriend whom everyone believes to be so much better than Wallace. Let's face it, Chantry and Ben have been together for 5 years and lives together and Wallace agreed to be just friends. Here starts the game of him hiding his feelings for her.

My feelings: I was expecting his movie to be somehow different, but despite all the jokes and the fun, it was also very deep. How many people end up with the wrong person just because it's so much easier to stick to your daily routine than to stand up to the challenge and grab that promotion at work even though it makes you move to Taiwan! Even though the main character is Wallace, I think what was going on in Chantry's life basically happens to most people and the fact that Ben was a rather uncaring bastard made it easier for her to finally do something for herself. Seriously, the way Ben reacted the first time we meet him, it was totally delirious. The other lesson from this movie is that your life is never going to be perfect and to stay the way it is because the world around you is evolving, people are moving all the time and if you decide to stop that's when things fall apart. Don't stay stuck, there are a lot of things that only you can achieve, happiness is in the motion, not the stillness.

Tuesday cinema: Ghost Writer

Welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema. This week will be the last of the Writer Movies series and we are going to talk about a thriller with a Ghost Writer as the main character. The Ghost Writer is generally the guy that stays in the darkness even when the book he wrote is a best seller saying that he doesn't have his name on it so I found it interesting to have this person in the spotlight for a change.

The story: A famous ghost writer, who introduces himself as the ghost, accepts to write the memoir of the ex British prime minister after the previous ghost writer is found dead drown on the beach. The task is simple: read the manuscript of the previous ghost write (600 pages of boring) talk with the prime minister about what he wanted his life to be like, of course he won't tell you the truth about his life because he has things to hide that you can't put in the book, and write the damn thing, get done with it in a month and grab a lot of money out of it. Except that because everyone is lying, the ghost goes into his own investigation while the prime minister is accused to be a war criminal.

My feelings: I didn't like his movie that much, I only liked Ewan McGregor's acting (a lot better than in Starwars). There were too many strange things in this movie to make it believable to me. First, the first ghost writer is dead, wouldn't you feel a little bit weird about taking the place of a dead guy, I mean, if he dies from a heartache ok, but his death was a really weird one, he drowned while he was on a ferry, how creepy is that! Then there is the all top secret stuff going on, the ghost writer can't take the manuscript home for a bedtime story because it's all super confidential, hum ok but isn't that book going to be published? I mean really that didn't sound pretty plausible to me. So yes, it wasn't really the best thriller of all time.

Tuesday Cinema: Misery

Welcome to a new Tuesday cinema dedicated Writer Movies, and this week we are going to talk about another Stephen King's novel based movie: Misery.

The Story: Succesful novelist Paul Sheldon is sick and tired of his successful series starring character Misery. He decided to write something else entirely and as usual went to a hotel in the mountain to finish his manuscript. As he goes out, however he is caught in a snow storm and rescued by nurse Annie Wilkes, his number one fan. He has multiple fractures in his leg and arm and can't move by himself, however Annie decides to nurse him back to health. Paul's last Misery books comes out and Annie reads it. That's when the trouble begins, Misery is dead.

My feelings: It's good to be rescued but not really when the rescuer is a total psycho with so much passive aggressivity bottled up that it finally leaks out. This story shows a very dark side of fandom. The side in which people don't really live for themselves anymore, but identify so much with a virtual character that they lose their freaking mind. Not that Annie was ever normal anyway. I wonder how she managed to end up in such an isolated part of the world without everyone in the little town nearby, being suspicious of her. At the same time Paul needed to be shaken a bit. I don't see myself writing a series I don't like just for the sake of money, that would be like selling my soul. Of course, he was already on the way to change and torture was probably not the kind of help he needed but there was something about him that needed a change, he didn't seem to feel even a tiny bit bad about killing his character when his readers were certainly devastated by the death.

Tuesday cinema: Secret Window

Welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema. For a bit I have decided that we are going to have Writer Movies, how cool is that!
What I mean by Writer Movies is movies where the main character is a writer. First, this week, let's start with "Secret Window", a movie based on Stephen King's novel.

The story: Mort Rainy (that's our writer) moves back to his cabin in the middle of nowhere while divorcing his wife. There, John Shooter comes to visit him and accuse him of plagiarism. At first, Mort doesn't take him seriously, but Shooter becomes more and more violent with his demands for recognition leading Mort to ask for protection. At the mean time, his ex-wife keeps on calling him asking how he is, leading to more and more anger and frustration.

My feelings: This is the second time I watched this movie. I didn't like it as much the first time, I guess that was because of my state of mind. I really enjoyed it this time. Do you know that writers create characters all the time in their head and that though characters start talking to them? I can have entire dialogues with my characters telling me at the moment to write their story and as they are in different stories that can become a lot messy. I think this movie is a good thriller, especially because Mort wanted isolation, but couldn't get it until he totally accepted himself not matter how creepy.

Tuesday Cinema: Copycat

Hello and welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema, this week we are going to see a thriller called: "Copycat".

Story: Dr. Helen Hudson, psychologist specialized in serial killers, became agoraphobic after being assaulted following one of her lectures. She hadn't left her house for more than a year. Yet, when a serial killer hit in San Fransisco, she can't help but call the police to give them valuable information. First skeptical the police finally ask her to help her the man who is reproducing the crime scene of famous serial killers described in her book. She ends up in the middle of the chase.

My feelings: It was an intense movie. The filming when she had to go out was impressive and never was anything easy for Helen. We can also feel her passion for her work from the fact that despite her attack, she is still able to put herself in the line again when other face danger, almost compulsively. The serial killer and the guy who attacked Helen in the first place are both super creepy.

Tuesday cinema: The bounty hunter

Hello and welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema. Today we are going to watch a comedy: The Bounty Hunter.

Story: Nicole is wanted for having run over a policeman's horse. She is a reporter and escaped to follow a lead on a suicide case she believed to be a murder. She must be on something because her colleague disappeared, her informant was kidnapped and there are people following her and they know how to use guns.
Milo is a bounty hunter. He seems to be broke all the time with people wanting him to give them their money back and a lot of people to catch. He is asked to go after Nicole to bring her back to court and is more than happy to accept.
On the way, she tries to have him help her. The problem is, Milo is Nicole's ex-husband and they hate each other.

My feeling: This movie was pretty funny. In the way that nobody really knows where they stand with the others. It goes from catching to escape, to catching again, to teaming up, to new escape and catching back. It goes totally crazy until the very end and it was really entertaining.
Steward was really hilarious, totally useless but the poor guy was really too funny and comical in a sad way.

Tuesday Cinema: The golden compass

Hello and welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema. Today I wanted to make a post about Van Helsing, but it was so bad, so terrible, so awful that I actually watched another movie for the post. So instead I'm going to tell you about The Golden Compass, which was a lot better.

Story: There are a lot of parallel worlds, all different, all linked together by dust. Lyra's uncle leaves to the far North in quest of the truth about dust. At the same time dark forces are at work and want to free themselves and the children from the control of the demons, a little animal that walks along everyone from birth and carry their soul. Roger, Lyra's friend is captured by the Gobblers and Lyra must find him before they remove his demon. But the Magisterium is conspiring to end tolerance and free inquiries and they want more than everything the Golden Compass sayer of truth that Lyra carries.

My feeling: It was a wonderful adventure filled with awesome concepts. First, there were three different older clans, the witches, the Gyptians and the ice bear all with a past and rules and different sort of magical powers. Then there was all the science behind the dust and the was the universe is ruled. There was also a powerful antagonist in the Magisterium and a lot of politics involved for Lyra to make allies. And finally my favorite part was the demons walking beside every character as different animals, changing shapes for the children, but already decided for the adults, helping and acting like the consciousness of the character in good or bad. It was really a nice movie.

Tuesday Cinema: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema!
This week we are going to talk about a steampunk movie from 2003 called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Story: A mysterious individual called the fantom seems to be trying to get England and Germany against one another to start a war. In England, the fantom stole the valuable Leonardo da Vinci’s layouts of Venice’s foundations, in Germany, he kidnapped scientists. The British Empire is in danger and Reed calls on Alan Quatermain to come to the rescue, he is to form a team called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to stop the evil scheme of the Fantoms. The team recruits heroes of the literature: Dorian Grey, Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, now a chemist and a vampire (well done Dracula), the invisible Rodney Skinner, Dr. Jekyll or was it more Mr. Hyde and a American secret agent called Tom Sawyer. Together they have to stop the fantom from destroying Venice and Europe's chance at peace.

My feeling: I liked the take on the different characters more than the story itself. Captain Nemo was not as great as should have been expected from him, he owe to be a lot smarter than that. I would rather have seen him as the leader than a mysoginistic Quatermain. On the other hand, seeing Mina as a vampire badass was totally awesome, I still wondered what happen for her to turn. I like how they took little pieces of everybody's past and managed to make the characters interact with each other.
On the other hand, I thought the plot was a little thin. There was not enough complexity to it. They all went toward their goal and even when moving as a team were still into their individual needs. The betrayal was a bit predictable and seeing the fantom almost running after them and throwing himself at them at the beginning was not especially cool. Like hey look we are in the same room, but I'm so terrible you can't catch me... Not realistic enough.

Tuesday Cinema: Interstellar

Welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema!
This week we are going to talk about a science fiction movie from last year called Interstellar.

Story: Cooper hates being a farmer, he was meant to be a NASA pilot, but NASA doesn't exist anymore. He wants better for his children, but the Earth doesn't need engineers, the population needs food and history is slowly rewritten in textbook to erase everything that made the 20th century and led to this catastrophic poisonous atmosphere. But one day, he discovers that NASA is not as gone as it seems and they are ready to send mankind in space through wormhole to save the species but first they need to see which planet is viable in another galaxy.

My feeling: The story was really well done except for two little points: 1) The guy who goes crazy and might kill you to save everyone who are still going to die. It makes sense in a way and in another it really doesn't. 2) You might need a little more than one female to recreate the human race, I mean yeah Adam and Eve multiplied so much that we are all here today but seriously it doesn't really add up. And scientist should think about gene diversity at least, really.
Except for though it was a great movie. I liked the interaction in the family and how she managed to stay mad at her dad for so long, because seriously she had a point before he left. Then I like the take on the time loop and multiple dimensions, it was really good.

Tuesday Cinema: The hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Welcome to not a Thursday, but a Tuesday cinema. Seeing that we have Thursday taster still going strong and that it's easier for me to watch movies at the weekend, I decided to change our movie review day. Now it's also aligned with Belfast's crazy Tuesday with very cheap all cinema shows all day every Tuesdays, someone remind me why I left Northern Ireland again? You got a job! Yes, I got a job, write. Anyway, enough with my life and geography and let's get on with the movie of the day.
A few weeks ago, I had this two day cinema special hobbit! One and Two

Now it's time to finish the series as I finally saw the last part!

Story: It's no time for the dwarfs to pay their debt to the humans. The village has been destroyed by the dragon, but the dragon is dead and everybody can start to prosper with the gold hidden in the mountain, right? Wrong, Greed is hidden in the dwarf's king's heart and ready to drive him crazy and to have him sacrifice his own people for the gold. But that's without counting on a certain wizard and of course, a hobbit.

My feeling: I'm not really sure what to think about this part. I think it felt a little bit short on emotion compared to the two previous parts. Maybe that was because it was mostly a large battle with individuals in different corners. Of course the deaths were touching but I had trouble to keep the feeling when the movie jumped so readily to another scene with another fight and another death. It lacked a bit of closure which was not well covered by the last conclusive tour between the characters. Somehow the movie seemed to fly compared to the previous one which were a lot more detailed. It is respectively 25 and 17 minutes shorter than the first and second movies and I'm sure a little bit of time would have help making it better.
My favorite part was still the love story between Tauriel and Kili, I wish they had a lot more time together.

Thursday Cinema: Horns

Happy New Year and Welcome to the first cinema post of the year! I hope there will be many more.

This year, we start with a bittersweet story: Horns!

Story: Ig is accused of the murder of his girlfriend. It seems that only his parents and lawyer believe him to be innocent. After a very bad day, he wakes up with horns growing on the top of his head. They seem to give him a certain power over people, prompting a race to find the real murderer.

My feelings: I hadn't seen any movie with Daniel Radcliffe except for Harry Potter and I think I need to watch more of him. This movie was so good. With the horns in place, he seemed to be the only good person. I liked the story because it was funny and at the same time it was so sad because Merril was dead. I really liked Ig, he is a very wonderful character who doesn't want to be bad even if everybody think he is and the way he manages to uncover everybody's darkest secrets is so good.

Thursday Cinema: La Belle et la bête!

Hello everyone and welcome on this Christmas day to a new Thursday Cinema post!
What better for Christmas than a fairy tale? And this year, I picked up a French movie just for you: "La belle et la bête" read Beauty and the Beast.

Story: Belle is the youngest of the six children of a rich merchant. When her father's boats disappear at sea, they are left with nothing but the debt of her older brother. Trying to save his family, his father lost himself in the forest. He is rescued by the beast who asks for his life in exchange of a rose he picked up. Belle goes to the castle instead of her father to negotiate.

My feelings: As I said, it is nice to have a fairy tale for Christmas. This tale gives a lot more details about the way the prince became the beast than the Disney animation. I enjoyed all the details about the landscape and scenery was really well made. The only problem in that movie is that as it doesn't focus all that much on the relationship between Belle and the Beast, it's rather hard to see how the love comes into play. The other thing is that we don't see enough of the little creatures supposed to be her best friend. Except for that it's a nice movie to watch with your family.

Now, don't forget to go grab your Christmas present at the foot of my Smashwords tree. The books are free until December 26th. Go get one, two, or all of them! Here are the codes to use upon checkout:

Cinema Special: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Welcome to a new Thursday Cinema.

This week to celebrate that "The Hobbit:  The Battle of the Five Armies" was out at the cinema yesterday, we have two movie posts this week. Yesterday, I talked about "The hobbit: An unexpected journey" and today about "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug".

Story: Bilbo Baggins and his friends have been through half of a difficult journey but more difficulties lay ahead. They need to be on time for the last light to show them the lock of the Lonely Mountain and then there is still the dragon.

My feeling: Somehow, I enjoyed the second moving more than the first. I think it was mostly due to the introduction of more Elves on the way and of the human helping them to escape the Elven kingdom. As the first movie was more about learning to trust each other and the changes in Bilbo Baggins, this one was more about the task that needed to be accomplished. I found it at the same time more serious and funnier. I was also nice to have a girl really taking part in the hunt of the enemies.

Thursday cinema: The hobbit: An unexpected journey

Welcome to a new Thursday Cinema.
This week to celebrate that "The Hobbit:  The Battle of the Five Armies" was out at the cinema yesterday, we will have two movie posts. One today about "The hobbit: An unexpected journey" and one tomorrow about "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug".

Story: Bilbo Baggins is a typical hobbit. As a hobbit, he likes to stay in his comfortable home with his books and never ever dreamed of going on a strange unexpected and uncomfortable journey. Unfortunately, the wizard Gandalf has different plans for him in mind and invites the a group of dwarfs to have a meeting in the hobbit's home. They then go on a journey to claim back their homeland taking with them... The Hobbit.

My feeling: I enjoy the story. I kind of like when movies start with someone telling the story which happened a long time ago. This movie starts at the same time as the Lord of the ring except that we follow Bilbo Baggins in his memories instead. I really enjoyed how the story unfold and how Bilbo was able to change through it and make choices for the greater good, even if they at time seems a bit out of characters. I think Gandalf has a way to make the best come out of people and he knew that nothing ever works without a hobbit to lead others. It was a really nice movie to watch. The ending was also a nice one, especially for an open one.

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for another Cinema post.

Thursday Cinema: Murder by number

Welcome to a new Thursday Cinema.

This week we have a crime movie! It has been a while. The truth is I didn't know this movie and I took a facebook quiz "Which Sandra Bullock characters are you?" And the answer was Cassie Mayweather, so I had to check it out.

Story: Two high school students decide to try their hands at a philosophy crime. They plan everything perfectly down to the evidences toward someone else and unhelpful clues. What they didn't plan was that investigator Cassie Mayweather believed herself more than all the clues and decided on her own that the case wasn't closed.

My feeling: This was a really good movies, I liked all the characters in it. Somehow I wanted to have the murders running free, but I still wanted Cassie to arrest them. I know I can have very conflicting desire at the same time. The story was really brilliant in the details and realism as well. I liked how most of the characters ran free on emotions without letting it impair their judgement.

Thursday cinema: Alice in Wonderland

Welcome to a new Thursday Cinema.
I know it has been a month since the las Thursday cinema, it was a bit hard to watch movies and get my NaNo writing done. I'm supposed to finish Fairy World's draft this month, but I haven't started back on it yet so at least I owe you a movie review. This time I will talk about Alice in Wonderland (the 2010 version)

Story: Since she is a little girl, Alice has been having the same dream over and over again. On the day of her surprised engagement party, after being proposed to against her will as her family is preparing her entire life for her, she follows a white rabbit in the rabbit hole. The people in Wonderland have been waiting for her to return all along but wait a minute... Is she the right Alice?

My feeling: That movie was awesome, and yes, this time I read the book before watching it, I even read it three times in two different languages. The movie is not about the book, of course you will find the same characters, but it is a sequel to the story and that was very interesting. It was funny and the creatures and landscape in wonderland were very beautiful. I also enjoyed the parallel between the people in the "real life" of Alice and what seem to be their counterparts in Wonderland. I also enjoy the fact that Alice learn and grow through the movie and manage to learn how to deal with her own life. Another good thing is that a sequel is planned for 2016.

Thursday cinema: Jurassic Park

Welcome to a new Thursday Cinema.

Let's continue the female scientist series with Dr. Ellie Sattler from Jurassic Park. Isn't she too cool? Taking care of the female Triceratops?
Jurassic Park comes from a book by Michael Crichton and this time I read it before watching the movie, yeah me!

Story: John Hammond has a dream. He likes to create attraction parks, but this time, he wants to make it real. After dinosaurs DNA was found in the blood taking from fossilized mosquitoes, his team of scientist is able to recreate a full set of dinosaurs mixing the DNA with a reptilian shake up. When a worker at the park is killed by a Velociraptor, the investors demand some experts to visit the site to test the safety. Come into play chaos mathematician Ian Malcolm, paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant and paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler. Of course, being in the middle of a dinosaur park when the electricity breaks down is not the best way to remain safe.
My feeling: I like the book better than the movie, it has a lot more to it as book usually does but I really enjoyed the special effect. It's as if the dinosaurs were real. I still believe it would be possible to have a dinosaurs park and I wonder what would actually have happened if there hadn't been a sabotage. Would have a single trip to dinoland made people believe it was safe? I also like all the science involved in the movie, it gives even more realistic values to it. The characters are also very well developed and I like the reaction of the kids. It's a very nice movie

Thursday Cinema: Gorillas in the mist

Welcome for a new Thursday cinema. This time, for our scientist woman series, we are going to talk about a real scientist as today's movie, Gorillas in the mist, is the true story of naturalist, Dian Fossey.

Story: Dian Fossey is inspired by an anthropologist to study gorillas. She managed to convince him to give her a job, which consist of counting the gorillas in the mountains in Africa. She embarks to Congo but is kicked out of the country going through civil war. Funded by the National Geographic, she then starts her study again on the Rwanda side of the mountain, but she has to fight against the poaching of the gorillas seen by the Rwanda government as the only way to survive for the native.

My feeling: This movie is a beautiful love story between a woman that nothing prepared for the African jungle, when she arrives, she wants her hair dryer and makeup, and a group of wild gorillas. Without any preparation, she follows a book to trace the gorillas. Then she develops her own mimicking technique to get closer to the animals. She became a part of her group and I think only people really close to her were able to see that and to understand why the poaching was driving her crazy. She spent her entire life in the jungle protecting and studying the gorillas abandoning any romantic relationship. I'm glad that in the end her efforts resulted in saving the species. This movie is still sad to no end.
