Tuesday Travel 80: Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. Every Tuesday, I will be presenting an excerpt of Witch Raising: The Book of Fire, the book in which Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul, is undertaking an initiatory journey.

About Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

Brownie, Samantha and Josh finally reached the temple. It was made of yellow sand stones which wasn't really weird since they were in the desert after all but the building seemed so much older than anything she had seen so far in town that Brownie had to ask.
"Impressive isn't it?! That's the only building that never burned," Samantha said. "Even when everything around was down to ashes, this building still stood and protected the population hidden inside."
"Why?" Brownie asked. "How is it possible?"
"It's the house of the fire lion, they wouldn't burn their own house," Samantha said.
"Because it's made of sand stone, with absolutely zero air passing through," Josh said. "There isn't a material less flammable in the world. The original site was made of wood from the river side near the mountain so they burned like champ, nothing better. Now they learned and everything is made of yellow sand stones, no more fire problems."
"But this is the desert." Brownie said not really understanding why people didn't use yellow sand stone in the first place if it was so effective.
"It's the end of the desert, the mountain is near and you'll see, they have a lot of trees so a lot of wood." Josh said.
"Not really," Samantha answered. "Just people didn't know how to build with sand stones, it's expensive to make, it takes time and people are naturally lazy, it's way easier to go to the mountain and get some wood to built a house how you know to, instead of learning something new and do it with what you have on hand."
"But they still have a lot of wood," Josh said.
Samantha rolled her eyes and pushed her book toward Brownie. There was a picture of the mountain and the forest surrounding it. The trees were more like small bushes. They called it deep forest probably as a joke or maybe because that was the deepest forest they ever had around. The river seemed to be a very tiny stream mainly made of mud.
So it was weird that they didn't get into the yellow sand stones building. Brownie looked at Josh wondering where he was getting his information and ideas. Maybe there was something out there that wasn't in the book. It didn't seem like Josh was the type to go places and not learn anything. After all, he had been the one insisting that they couldn't stay in the hotel all day and go out just for the music.
