Since she turned three, Isabelle had increasing hours of religious practice every morning to prepare for her duty as an Hamelin traveler. Too much trouble, too much pressure, showing gratitude to the god to let her travel during the day to come. Except that at three Isabelle couldn't travel yet and at four she still hadn't managed too. When she turned five her parents had almost abandoned all hopes and decided that they needed another child because the Hamelin universe needed an heir. But they couldn't make one, and they discovered the imposter. Another girl in this universe was being watched because she was traveling without permission. It was a blow for her mother who turned to the god even more, asking for forgiveness and that the power would be send upon her daughter instead of the other girl.
Isabelle just wanted to meet her. Because there was no other child her age supposed to travel but her mother refused saying that it would be bad luck, that the girl was a demon who had stolen her power from her and that Isabelle would never be able to travel. The truth was Isabelle was too scared to let herself travel. Everything she did was wrong, from the way she spoke to the way she behaved and now that she couldn't travel it was ever worse. Her mother would correct every little move she made, every word she said, just to make her more likely to get the power. They did tests and she had in fact the travel gene, the ability was inside her, it was just dormant. That's when her mother gave up.
“This girl is never going to do anything properly, I'm sure she is doing it on purpose,” she said one day.
She didn't care that Isabelle was also sitting at the dinner table.
