Tuesday Travel 124: Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. Every Tuesday, I will be presenting an excerpt of Witch Raising: The Book of Fire, the book in which Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul, is undertaking an initiatory journey.

About Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

But demons were everywhere now, everywhere she went Brownie would find some or they would find her. There was not a chance to undo her knowledge. She had met one, and then the demon had rained over her life like monsoon. She kept walking, she pushed toward the wall, trying to make sure to keep their back as close to the walls as possible while walking toward the other side of the room without taking her eyes away from the demons.

They hadn't move, like statues, but they were ready to pounce, maybe they wouldn't do it on the first wave of people, maybe they would wait the last, the humans would be tired from all the wait to see the show, hungry, and it would be way easier to catch their prey.

One of them turn on his rock, following the crowded walking out of the room to another dark corridor. The fact that they even appeared here was crazy to begin with and how they were under the spotlight. It was like telling, I'm the clue of the show, the cherry on the cake and I'm definitely going to kill you, have a good look at me. And Brownie was having a very good look at them. She was looking at them and never stopped. There were two of them, as expected in a way but none of them were the demon she had seen at the show earlier. Those were younger and smaller. Their horn weren't has big even though they were prominent.

A third demon flew to the top and this time Josh came closer to her.

"Tell me he was using cords," he said.

"It's called wings," Samantha answered.

The wings in question were dark brown as if the demon was deprived of all emotions.

"You're kidding," Josh said coming even closer.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"Technically, they can't see me or anyone close enough to me," Brownie said.

Samantha came a bit closer.

"Close enough?"

"I don't know but in doubt, just hold onto me," Brownie said.

"You girls are crazy," Josh said. "It's a show for tourist."

"A show that killed my father," Samantha said. "My mother barely escaped and she has been in a psychiatric hospital ever since."

"Then why did you come?" Brownie asked.

It made no sense to her, if Samantha had known all along how dangerous this was... But she herself wasn't really the type to run away from danger either. Maybe she would have come too but she knew demons, she sort of knew how to handle them.

"Because I needed to know, I needed to see them. Because everyone was like him, telling me that it was just a show. My bet is, the fire lions never existed, the demons had been payed in blood every single year and it got just easy for them with all the tourist," Samantha said.

She couldn't take her eyes from the demons. It was true that it was easy, a large tourist attraction, if a few disappeared, it wouldn't make much noise, even if people knew what was happening, even if some people talked, nobody would believe them, demons didn't really exist after all, not in the life of normal people.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"So you know the guy, that's how you know he killed people?" Josh said.

"No, I know he killed people because of his horns, they start growing with the first kill and they keep at it with every kill, his were huge," Brownie said.

She had observed the demon, there was nothing fake about him, from the tattoos to the wings and the damn horns. The horns were always the scary part. If you really thought about it, horns were supposed to be something that animals wear either to impress peers or to fight. Demons didn't need horns to fight, no demon had the need to go head to head with another, the only purpose the horns serve was to impress others, enemies and friends alike. Nobody would dare to cross someone with such huge horns unless they were really confident in their powers or had nothing to lose and Brownie wasn't confident that her power could get her out of here and she had a lot to lose starting with her life once again. At some point it was really starting to get old.

"Right," Josh said.

He sounded amused. Like everyone around who were walking without knowing about the danger. The sound of the foot steps on the rocky floor of the cave was putting Brownie on edge. The last time she had heard that sound she was trying to get away from another cave that was falling down on their face. She took as many deep breathes as she could.

They arrived in the second chamber. There were two demons at the center, standing on rocks, high enough above the ground that everyone could see them.

"How did they get up there?" Josh asked.

"They have wings," Samantha whispered.

"Just stay next to me," Brownie said.

"You have a plan?" Samantha asked.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"Why is it so dark, I can't see a thing?" Josh said on her left.

She grabbed his sleeves.

"Are you ok?"

"I am, but this place is dangerous, just stay with me," Brownie said.

"Like you can protect me," Josh said half laughing.

"I'm not kidding," Brownie answered.

She wasn't ready to just drop the bomb and tell him everything, she might not even have time for that, but she wasn't going to let him or Samantha die.

"She is right, we better stick together because we aren't walking toward the exit, we are going down underground," Samantha said.

"Yes but isn't that the way out," Josh said. "I mean there are three chambers, we come from the first, the other two have to be deeper in the cave and closer to a different exit."

"It was a real demon in there, and I bet they have more, not every one is coming out of here alive unless the fire lions wake up," Samantha said.

"Seriously girl, that's just a story," Josh said.

"No," Brownie said. "She is right, it was a real demons and one who has killed many people at that."

She didn't know about many more demons all that she knew that they mostly always came in pair and the one they had seen was supposed to be the stupid beefy one, and the next would be the small smart one, unless they had a different plan.

"Demons don't exist," Josh said. "It was an actor."

Brownie grabbed Samantha's bag on the other side as the girl walk slightly in front of her.

"They exist, it's not the first one I meet," Brownie said.

Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

Brownie took a deep breathe as they reached the end on the room and entered a narrow corridor. This place had not been touched by humans, this was exactly the same type of cave when she had been held prisoner and her aquamarine wouldn't stop. It was getting dark, people were pressing again each other. She wished she could hold hands with Samantha or Josh but that would be too awkward afterward. She just wished someone was there and that this corridor led outside quickly because the space was once again closing up around her and she knew she wouldn't need much to see the images of her captivity again.

And the demon was there too. She couldn't see him but she could feel him, like in her worse nightmare. There was no way to escape, too many people around. No way to fight, no space to turn and run. Her aquamarine was shining under her T-shirt and sweater. She could feel it become warm and the other stone was vibrating in her pocket. That was a danger call, this place wasn't safe anymore, if it ever was. The demons could be leading them anywhere, she had been foolish to try for anything related to demon. The path they were taking wasn't going out, it seemed to be getting underground.

"They can't see you, they can't see you, remember that, you are already hidden," a little voice said in her head.

Brownie took a deep breathe wishing for the panic to subdue at least long enough for her to find the way out. She was safe, she had Viorel's pendant, the demons couldn't see them. Sahel hadn't been able to see her either.

Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

Brownie wasn't sure what had happen, obviously the demon hadn't burned to death but he was gone through a trap on the floor and out of sight. And she could feel the danger of not seeing him. There was another round of applause and all the actors except for the demon came to bow again and again and then they had to move on.

"That was awesome," Josh said. "Did you see how they burned the guy with the wings to ashes? I mean I know they didn't really burned him but damn he totally passed through fire, I wish I knew how to do that."

"It was a demon, demon can do that with magic," Samantha said.

"Seriously, girl, that was no demon, demons are red skinned and ugly and malformed," Josh said.

Brownie didn't say anything but Samantha was right. The demon had been real and he had vanished into the ground using a trap door and his power to control the fire around him. And Brownie didn't want to stick here long enough to meet the guy even if he couldn't possibly see her.

"It was a real demon," Samantha said. "And he escaped the fire using his power and pretending to be turn into ashes and he'll be back up for the next representation."

"Whatever you say," Josh said.

He wasn't buying it. He was like one of the people in her city who could see demons all over the place and still believed they were just normal people wearing weird clothes and looking around, he wasn't the only one. People where impressed by the technique, some even wondering if the demon had been a puppet they had really burn. Nobody took the time to think that someone burning would have yelled and something burning would have taken a lot longer. It was insane, there was no way to explain what had just been going on if you didn't want to say it was a demon.

Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

But why would they bring a real demon here for the show, why take the risk. On the other hand not all demons were bad, Sahel wasn't bad, his friends weren't really bad either. Reckless and maybe dangerous to be around but not bad.

Brownie couldn't take her eyes away from the demon, trying to figure out if there was something about him she knew, if she could guess his mood or something. But all she could see were his horns they were so big that his neck was way thicker than the neck of the average person. They had to be really heavy and that also meant that he had killed a lot of people or a lot of demons, maybe as many as the people in this room. Brownie had a bad feeling about this. The offering to the demon wasn't a game, they were really offering this girl to a demon and everybody was applauding. She didn't move. Was she being irrational or was the demon really here to take the girl and in exchange he would leave the city alone? They couldn't fight him, even all of them together. There was no way to fight a demon. For sure he had some powers about water and fire and he might even be able to create an earthquake like Azazel did and totally bury them all in the cave. But then why involve so many people to do the deed, why make a festival out of it. Brownie was raking her brain but couldn't figure out the answer. That's when the lions appeared. Not the same men in costume she had seen before but giant colorful beast, she blinks and realized that someone had to be making the things move. They circled around the demons he was in between them with his prey and he tried to run but the fire came from behind, the woman fell on the floor and one of the lion took her. She was just a white spot in the red fur. The demon was burning and disappeared on the ground. Next there was no more fire and ashes were carried away by the wind. The woman was back on her feet, singing in gratitude to the lions this time.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"About forty-five minutes," Samantha answered.

Josh snatched a few picture of the room and the ceiling. Brownie was amazed to see that he hadn't taken pictures of the crowd earlier. There had been a lot of things she would have loved to photograph, like the booths or all the lion statues they had passed by.

The singer started to sing again. The crowd went somehow quiet, all eyes looking at the woman in front of them. She was still wearing her white dress but her lions has disappear, instead she was with an old man who seemed to be her father. He was admonishing her for praying to be left out of her duty. Other characters appeared for the play, they all seemed as unhappy with her and they pushed her forward toward a dark curtain. The curtain opened on a decor of cave. This time it looked more like a real demon den and it gave Brownie the chill. It had to be what this place looked like before it was transformed. They pushed the girl toward the cave and ran away, she was still praying as if she hadn't listen to anything the villagers had said.

The Aquamarine under Brownie's T-shirt started to spin and the demon appeared. He was looking like a man but he had huge horns on the top of his head and large wings flipping in his back. Brownie didn't know how it was possible but he looked real. He scanned the crowd but his eyes didn't fall on anyone, they seemed to glide on Brownie and she clung at Viorel's medallion remembering that the demon couldn't see her.

"This costume is incredible," Josh whispered.

But one thing Brownie was sure of, this wasn't a costume.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

People were standing looking toward the center of the cave, from where she stood, Brownie couldn't see what they were looking at or what was around the cave. But seeing the air moving around, it seemed like there had to be at least two other exits. It was nothing like what she had imagine, and it was nothing to be afraid of.

People moved toward the walls and there were tier there. Brownie follow Josh and Samantha up the stairs and they found a place to sit in a row.

They were told to sit next to each other, every seat had to be taken so that they could accommodate as many people as possible.

"How many people are in here?" Josh asked.

"I really don't know," Brownie said looking around.

Now, with the elevation, she could see the entire room. Some people were stopped at the entrance of the corridor.

"We are lucky to have seats for the first representation," Samantha said. "They'll do four or five depending on how many people are still waiting outside. Seriously I didn't feel like waiting again."

So that was it. The cave which had been transformed for the festival so much that it looked more like a concert hall than a cave. Somehow Brownie was a bit disappointed. She had thought it would be more like a real demon den. It had scared her for nothing. She hoped her brain would take note of that and stop acting up. Stop freaking out in advance at the suspected danger instead of acting on it when it presented itself. She was happy to sit down though, that was a nice change. She once again grabbed a sweater in her bag.

"How long is the representation?" she asked.

Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"You know that's a legend, right? That demons don't really exist!"

"But what if they do, underground, in this cave?" Brownie asked.

She was getting sweaty with cold sweat. She had been alright and confident at the beginning, she had thought she could do this because she knew about demons but what if this cave was really extending toward the one where she had been prisoner and if the demons could feel her.

"No worry, they don't. Those people do this every year and nobody died so far," Josh said trying to reassure her but looking as if he believed she was half crazy.

"Actually people freak out and die from time to time, if there is a stampede, you better not fall or it's over for you," Samantha said.

"Oh thanks for the info," Josh said throwing her a dark look.

Brownie looked at the singer and concentrated on her. If she was going in and she might have been going in several time, there shouldn't be any danger. She didn't look so strong and the lion protecting her didn't seem so strong either, they were just normal people.

The singer walked down from her stage, still singing and she walked toward the cave, people in front of her were pushed to the side by security. The lions were following her at a good distance.

Brownie finally saw the entrance of the cave. It was nothing like the cave she had been hold prisoner in, the entrance was framed by white pillar like you could see in the ruins of Roman temples. The entrance was cut as an arch. It was definitely man made, demon would never had added nonfunctional pillars or cut the ceiling so smooth. That was a bit reassuring. The monks followed the singer and her lions, then came the dancers and then the crowd including Brownie, Josh and Samantha, walking right in the middle of the crowd. Brownie wondered how many people could fit in that cave but she didn't have to worry too long. They arrived at the center of a large chamber. There were stalactite all over the ceiling but they had posed a protective filet so that if one of them were ever to fall down, it would be caught and nobody would be injured.

Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"Where is the fire?" She whispered to Josh.

The crowd was far from being quiet but she felt like talking louder would be disrespectful to the ceremony. She had no doubt that at least once in the past, demons had been here and a girl or several had been sacrificed to them.

"They'll start it at sun down, after we exit the cave," Josh said.

The sun was still high, it was turning the sky red and orange and purple but Brownie didn't see how they would exit the cave at sun down, it felt like that would take forever and she didn't want to spend that long in the cave.

She looked around trying to see the entrance of the cave but the crowd around them was way too numerous to see anything behind them.

Samantha was writing something in her book and looking at the singer as if transfixed. It seemed as if there was an halo surrounding her. Brownie stroke her eyes and then it was gone. She didn't know if she had dreamed it or not but it was making her uneasy. There was something strange going on with Samantha from the beginning, she wanted to investigate but at the same time she didn't want to get involved. Sometimes like this when her feeling were in conflict, the statement "ignorance is bliss" started to make sense but she still didn't want to face anything without being prepared for it. It was the curse that had fallen unto her when she had started thinking for herself and putting herself in dangerous situation.

"I'm not sure I want to go to the cave," Brownie said.

""It's going to be fun, they are going to reenact the lion going to save the maiden," Josh said.

"But what if there are real demons in their waiting for the crowd to enter to fall on us," Brownie said.

Josh looked at her intensely.

On the top of that, the way to the cave seemed to take forever, even more than the trip to the shrine at the top of the mountains had taken. She wanted this day to finish. She was about to decided to give up when the music suddenly stop and a unique feminine voice started to sing like a prayer to the lions.

"We are there," Samantha said smiling as if she had been waiting for that her whole life. "This is the prayer of the last maiden before she was sacrificed to the demons, the cave can't be too far, we have to move closer, I have to watch this."

She didn't wait for anyone to answer. She didn't wait for Brownie to tell her that it was crazy that they didn't need to enter the demon cave but she was already walking toward the edge of the parade, moving forward where the crowd had thinned and Josh was following her, calling on Brownie.

"Come on, come on, we are going to lose her, there are too many people to be slow, come on."

Brownie wasn't been slow, she was testing the crowd for any danger but there seemed to be none. She sighed in relief as she followed Josh and Samantha. They ended up just in front on the left of the singer. The girl was a lot older than Brownie had expected the Maiden to be, probably as much as thirty or so. And there were two lions by her side, carried each by two men in costumes with fur around their torso and heads, long sleeves T-shirt and tights. It was a strange and beautiful sight. She was so white and pure, with a crone of white flower and the lions were so red like fire that they might as well burn her with their dance. What surprised Brownie the most was that except for the candles at the restaurant, so far, she hadn't seen any real fire. The lions were just decorated with it and nobody was carrying any. It was strange that a fire festival should have no fire at all.

Tuesday Travel 112: Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. Every Tuesday, I will be presenting an excerpt of Witch Raising: The Book of Fire, the book in which Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul, is undertaking an initiatory journey.

Brownie looked at him. She had stopped cutting her first piece in the middle. She wanted to eat with her finger but the others were cutting small pieces and feeding themselves using fork, so she had to do the same. The crust was hard to cut and she wasn't used to it but she knew she had just been carried by her thoughts again. She decided to try to give more attention to the present and what was going on right in front of her because if she didn't, she would be back at thinking about the cave and nothing good could come from that.

"Yes," she said forcing herself to smile after taking her first bite. "It's really delicious."

Strangely or not, Samantha ate all her food and Brownie tried not to think about how that was possible but it was still all she could think about. That and the cave coming up. They followed the parade, getting always closer and closer to the cave and at time it seemed like the space was closing around her.

There was nothing she could do about it. She kept on rationalising it, telling herself that it was alright that there were no demons in that cave. At other time telling herself that even if there were nasty demons, people would be running out before she even set a foot in. Then telling herself that demons couldn't see her because of Viorel's pendant so that she had nothing to fear and sometimes thinking recklessly that she would give the pendent to someone who needed it and face the demons all by herself because that's what brave witches were supposed to do.

Her thoughts were driving her insane and no amount of conversation with Josh or trying to look at the statues of the lions on the side would do to distract her. What at first had seemed like a really good exploration idea was now no more than a crazy attempt to face her fear and fear was about to take over her mind and body again.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

The waiter came and put the pizza in front of her and her companion but she didn't quite register it. She took another deep breath and the room went back to normal. The yelling in her ears stopped.

"Are you ok?" Josh said filling up her glass of water. "You look pale, as if you had seen a ghost."

She took the glass of water with a shaky hand and hold it with her second one to stabilise it.

"I'm ok," she finally said.

"No you're not," Samantha answered.

Brownie looked at her.

"I wasn't, I don't know what happened, it never happened to me before so, I'm not sure but now I'm ok I guess, it stopped."

"You had a panic attack," Samantha said. "We were talking about magic at the cave, remember."

"Yes," Brownie said feeling her heart getting agitated again. "It's going to be fun."

She forced herself to smile. She didn't panic, she couldn't panic now, so far from home and so far from her goal. She was safe now. In everything she had done, with everything that had happened to her, why would she panic when she was with friends at the restaurant having a conversation. Here was safe, this couldn't be happening. It was like one of her nightmare but in the middle of the day.

"That was scary," Josh said. "You were like another person."

"My mind sort of got stuck on something," Brownie said. "We better eat before the pizzas get cold."

She didn't really want to talk about it. How could she explained to stranger what was happening to her. She wasn't sure what it even was. She had done a lot since leaving the cave, why was it coming back now. The demons looking for her were hundreds of kilometers away. She wished there was someone she could tell about that, but she knew that even if she were home right now, there wouldn't be anyone. Hitomi maybe, she would listen but the other would freak and just tell her she couldn't do magic in this state and they would be right. What if this happened during a spell, what if she was brought back to these thoughts in the middle of something dangerous. What if it had happened while she was in Kallisto's consciousness. That was crazy, This couldn't be happening.

"It's really good," Josh said. "The best pizza I ever had in my entire life."

"How often do you do spells?" She asked.

"Why do you care?"

"I'm sorry, I just think magic is interesting and maybe you could teach me something," Brownie said.

"I don't like to talk about it, it's personal," Samantha answered.

"Come on," Josh said plugging a fries and dipping it into some ketchup, "We all love a good magic story."

"Yeah, but as I said it's not working and talking about it will only make it worse. You'll see at the cave, they have magic going on there," Samantha said.

"What kind of Magic?" Brownie said slowly.

Images came in front of her eyes, things she would rather like to forget. Images of the chains, the horned demon, Kion chained with her. Kion with his wings so destroyed that he probably never learned to fly. Yue in there with them, mad at her, taking the side of the demons against her because he had forgotten. She tried to push the images aside but the more she tried, the more they seemed to last. Kion's voice in her ears, Kion's voice in her head. She closed her eyes and put her hands on her ears but it didn't stop the images and it didn't stop the sounds, it was in her head, all in her head, and she couldn't stop it or control it, she was falling in a pit, deeper and deeper. She couldn't breathe, her chest was compress.

"Are you ok?" Josh voice was calling from so far away.

"I think she is having a panic attack," Samantha said.

Brownie tried to concentrate on their voice. Samantha put her hand on Brownie's shoulder and Brownie was startled, she opened her eyes and the restaurant's room with it's yellow walls and flowers on the table came back into focus. She tried to take a deep calming breathe but it was too soon. The room was spinning. She put her hands on the table to balance herself.
