Welcome to Tuesday Travel. Every Tuesday, I will be presenting an excerpt of Witch Raising: The Book of Fire, the book in which Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul, is undertaking an initiatory journey.
Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.
The excerpt, we start where we left off last week
Brownie looked at him. She had stopped cutting her first piece in the middle. She wanted to eat with her finger but the others were cutting small pieces and feeding themselves using fork, so she had to do the same. The crust was hard to cut and she wasn't used to it but she knew she had just been carried by her thoughts again. She decided to try to give more attention to the present and what was going on right in front of her because if she didn't, she would be back at thinking about the cave and nothing good could come from that.
"Yes," she said forcing herself to smile after taking her first bite. "It's really delicious."
Strangely or not, Samantha ate all her food and Brownie tried not to think about how that was possible but it was still all she could think about. That and the cave coming up. They followed the parade, getting always closer and closer to the cave and at time it seemed like the space was closing around her.
There was nothing she could do about it. She kept on rationalising it, telling herself that it was alright that there were no demons in that cave. At other time telling herself that even if there were nasty demons, people would be running out before she even set a foot in. Then telling herself that demons couldn't see her because of Viorel's pendant so that she had nothing to fear and sometimes thinking recklessly that she would give the pendent to someone who needed it and face the demons all by herself because that's what brave witches were supposed to do.
Her thoughts were driving her insane and no amount of conversation with Josh or trying to look at the statues of the lions on the side would do to distract her. What at first had seemed like a really good exploration idea was now no more than a crazy attempt to face her fear and fear was about to take over her mind and body again.
