Tuesday Travel 140: Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. Every Tuesday, I will be presenting an excerpt of Witch Raising: The Book of Fire, the book in which Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul, is undertaking an initiatory journey.

About Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"So you take the front and I take the back to make sure none of them escape. They might come running toward you so be prepared."

"What about me?" Josh said.

"I need something to help carry the supplies then you can go where ever you want," Brownie said.

"Hum, ok," Josh said.

"Let's go," Samantha said.

She seemed to feel like she was in charge and that's exactly what Brownie wanted.

"So I wait half an hour and we both cast," Samantha said.

"Better wait until all the possible human target are out of range," Brownie said.

"Yeah, agreed," Samantha said. "It doesn't even matter if we are in sink anyway, as we are aiming for confusion."

"Exactly," Brownie answered.

Samantha disappeared in their room and Brownie waited for her to come back out and be on her way to try to find a supply store.

"What's going on?" Josh asked.

"I needed her gone, that's what's going on," Brownie said.

"Why?" Josh asked.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"Why don't we both cast a spell?" Brownie said.

"Really?" Josh said. His eyes were shining with envy looking at Samantha and then at Brownie. He had thought he had found a witch which was already something but apparently he had two now.

"I thought you said that might be counter productive," Samantha said.

"Well yes, I thought that at first but then, if we are doing confusion spells, it doesn't really matter much because confusion in the spell will also spread confusion," Brownie said.

Samantha didn't answer, she seemed to be thinking. All Brownie wanted was to get rid of at least her. She could use energy from Josh if she managed to make him shut up long enough but Samantha was something different, she was rebellious to any ideas Brownie was going to have.

"Right, so how are we going to do this?" Samantha said.

"I'll need some supply, I saw a store on the way," Brownie said. "You can go to the cave entrance and set yourself up. I'll get what I need and go to the exit. I need a visual of the demons, do you need one too?"

"No," Samantha said. "I can visualize anything in my head."

Even better.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"Looking for supplies, let's go," Brownie said not giving him time to settle in.

Samantha was looking around the room interested and her eyes lingered on the safe a little bit too long for Brownie's taste. She would have to make sure everything was always where it should be and to keep an eye on Samantha. Things were getting more and more difficult. She couldn't decide if these two were allies or if they were going to be messing with her.

"Seriously, what have you got here?" Samantha said.

"A book with maybe an answer," Brownie said.

Samantha was extending her hand to grab the book but Brownie placed it under her other arm.

"Now get out, I have to close this door."

They walked out and Samantha still looked at the safe and then at Brownie's book. Brownie got it. The girl wanted to do magic and stuff but she wasn't going to listen to her, she wanted to do it her own way, which gave her an idea.

"Samantha, do you know what spell you want to use?" Brownie said.

"Yes, I think so," Samantha said. "I already prepared all the supply I need but you disregarded my recommendations so..." She let the rest of her thoughts linger.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

There was absolutely no way this book had been there a few seconds ago. Brownie didn't know what was the deal with this box but she was starting to like it. She closed it and placed it back in the safe and hide it with Viorel's food bag and some clothes. It needed to look as if there was nothing special in there. It was precious. She would have kept it with her but she was going to go mess with demons in a little bit and she couldn't possibly bring them something like this, in case she was caught.

She paused a moment. She could just ignore everything, spend the rest of the few days she had here magic free or even go to the train station right now and hop in the next train home. But at the same time, if she was one of those defenseless people, she would have loved to have someone around to do something, anything.

She opened the door, Josh and Samantha erupted in the room.

"What were you doing in there?" Josh said.

Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"Damn you Dylan! What the hell! You had my hopes up for like half a minute," Brownie said. She put the lid back on the box wondering what she had really been looking for in a box given by Dylan. Somehow she had thought that the solution of her spell problem was going to come up right her. All the supply she needed and the words she was supposed to say but she hadn't believe in it because there was no way Dylan would have known what she would need and he wasn't really the helpful type, except he was always helping her when pretending he didn't.

"I wished you were here," Brownie said. "Or at least I wished I had access to the library to get this spell straight. If I mess up again..." She took a deep breathe. "Damn! I can't mess up again."

She shook the box to put it back in the safe and something clicked inside as if there was an item. She took it back curious and opened it again. A book was there. The title on the leather cover read: "Clarity and confusion."

"You've got to be kidding me," she said out loud at she grabbed the book out of the box.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"Just give me a minute," Brownie said.

"No, just open the door, you aren't doing magic without me," Josh said.

"Seriously, give me a minute or I'll change you into a frog," Brownie said. That was the curse she used against her little siblings when they were being too noisy and surprisingly, it worked on Josh too. Brownie wasn't sure what to think of it.

One thing was sure, Samantha and Josh were both stressing her out because they didn't know what they were getting into, or what they were talking about and they still talked about it as if magic was natural. Samantha had all those supplies that were unusable because she had unknowingly ruined them which maybe was a good thing. Brownie wasn't sure. All she knew was that even when she didn't know what she was doing she was way more careful with the magical power given to her or not, and way more humble in front of the goddess. Even with all the mistakes she made, she wasn't trying to pretend that she would make it work when she had no idea. She fished Dylan's box at the very bottom of the safe, hidden under Viorel's bag of food and took a deep breath. This had better be worth it. She pulled on the strings and it opened to a black interior, the box was empty.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

She had scented candles for which the scent didn't match the candles color Brownie needed. She had incense put all together in the same bag and couldn't even recognise which was which by smell, most of them had been contaminated. Brownie repeated that the incense needed to be separated by scent and Samantha wasn't really into making that happen. No matter what spell she had cast alone the night before, Brownie would have had nightmare about doing it with such sloppy supplies.

"You don't have what I need," Brownie finally said.

"You're not even looking," Samantha answered.

Brownie shook her head and remembered Dylan's box. She still didn't know what was in it. Maybe something gross, maybe something usable.

"I'll be right back," she said rushing out of the room toward hers. They were on her heals and she didn't want them to see whatever was in Dylan's box. She prepared her key while rushing up the stairs and closed the door of her room behind her. Josh banged at the door.

"Hey, open up!"

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

The spell was still only half baked in her mind. It was unclear and it might backfire and put her in danger but she couldn't just sit back in her room at the hostel and do nothing.

"What is it?" Josh asked. "Take a megaphone and yell at every one to run?"

"A little bit more subtle than that," Brownie said. "First I need supplies, then we'll need to come back here and wait for most people to have gone, the best way to do this is to get only the demons and the remaining prisoners."

"And what are you going to do exactly?" Josh asked.

"Show them who is the witch in charge," Brownie said with a smirk.

They insisted to come along. Brownie repeatedly told them that she didn't need help but they insisted that they couldn't leave her alone with the demons which was sweet and incredibly annoying. First of all, she wasn't sure she had the right supplies and she wasn't even sure she would be able to actually caste the proper spell. Second, she had never done a confusion spell before, her spell had been more about clarity and directed toward herself instead of toward other. Third, Samantha had sworn that she had the supplied and so they had wasted time going through her stuff to find absolutely nothing usable.

That took Samantha out of her frenzy. For Brownie, it was like asking how many people are going to stay alive if we sacrifice a few lives. She just thought and thought and an unclear idea for an obstruction spell came to her mind. If she managed to get close enough and to formulate an obstruction spell clearly enough, maybe she could confuse the demons enough for people to run away.

"You can't let people die. No matter how many they plan to kill," Samantha said.

"Is it one, or two, was your father just the unlucky one?" Josh said.

Samantha pulled her arm away from him. He held tight and she fought him to make him let go of her. In the process, he let go of Brownie.

"Just freaking calm down and be happy you are alive," Josh said.

"Shut up, you monster. You are not better than those demons," Samantha said.

"I've got an idea," Brownie said.

"What are we going to do?" Samantha said.

"Nothing, we do nothing," Josh said.

Brownie was glad she wasn't the one who had said it. Josh had taken both girls by the hand and was pulling them back toward the city.

"That's awful, people are going to die," Samantha said.

"First, we don't know that," Josh said. "Second, I don't want to burn alive. And third, if it's only the three of us against not only the demons but the organisers of the show, which means a large part of this city including, the dancers, the musicians, the monks, and possibly even the hostels and restaurants owners and about everyone living here, I don't see that we stand a single chance against them.

"But we have to do something, we can't let people die," Samantha said.

"How many people die here each year?" Josh asked.

Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

"I know," Brownie answered but she couldn't figure out what, she was at a complete loss, if they were looking for her, why would they stop so many people. Others around them were trying to figure out was going on. Thinking it was just a game, an extra part of the show. It was creepy how easy it was for demons to fool humain into compliance. For sure some people here had family members back there. What did the demon tell them to make them abandon their loved one?

Brownie kept on thinking but she didn't see how she could do anything without putting more people at risk.

"We have to warn them," Samantha said.

"I know," Brownie answered but she didn't know how. The people outside the cave might run in panic toward the city and there would be a stampede with demons possibly giving chase and taking their terror on the people in the city too. Then the ones on the other side might be killed if they tried to run and the one inside would probably never come out. It would be easy for the demons to close up the entrance of the cave with their Earth power. Sacrificing a small amount to solve a big number had never sounded like a good idea but right now that's all Brownie could come with, do nothing to save the one the demons weren't interested in. She was already feeling so lucky to be almost safe.

His hand was hot and sweaty but that wasn't what bothered Brownie the most about it. There was some sort of pulse coming from him too, on top of his heart beat which was going faster than normal. A pulse she hadn't encounter before but it seemed to want to invade her body. Her aquamarine started to spin and Brownie realised that the spin was going at the same rhythm as Josh pulse. What it meant, she didn't know but she was going to need to figure it out sooner or later. If her stone had been reacting to Josh all along, there was something he was definitely hiding from her, something related to magic and Brownie didn't really like surprises of that kind.

They walked along the wall of the cave and slipped through the line of demons. It was easy, they were invisible after all, all they had to do was wait for the opportunity of a hole between the last demon and the wall.

"What are they going to do with those people?" Josh asked.

"I don't know but nothing good for sure," Brownie said.

They were back on the other side where people were still trying to enter the cave to see the show, unknowing that demons were waiting for them.

"We have to do something," Samantha said.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last time

He was still walking close to them but seemed happy with the show the demons where putting flying above them up and down the corridor, sometimes so low that some people touched them. Brownie wondered what happened to them afterwards, some people were lowering themselves to be sure not to touch the demons, some people were yelling but she couldn't distinguish anything they said clearly. The only thing her ears seemed to hear were the constant flipping of the wings and her own foot steps way to loud on the rocky floor of the cave. They couldn't see her but they could hear her.

Finally, they stepped out of the cave. The sun was still hot and the contrast of temperature from the cave took her by surprise, so did the light. She blinked several times and frowned. Samantha was clinging at her hand even more strongly than she had done in the cave. There were more demons on this side, they formed a row and let certain people walked away while keeping some others. It wasn't a game anymore. Balls of fire were flying.

"What are we going to do?" Samantha asked.

"Stay really close to me, don't say anything just follow," Brownie answered.

"Ok, now I got it," Josh whispered and he took Brownie's free hand.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

They walked. It seemed so slow but the demons were at their back now and even if Josh and Samantha kept on looking back toward them, Brownie didn't. She was escaping, she didn't need to see what was after her, she already knew, all she needed was to know what was in front of her, to make sure she was going in the right direction, to make sure she wasn't tripping. The cave was slippery and the path was going up fast toward a hole filled with the last ray of sunshine. She felt lucky that they had been in the first group and that there was still light on the other side. Above the sound of the crowded that seemed to be getting tired of walking, there was the sound of flipping wings. The demons were flying toward them. Brownie didn't want to look, she kept her head down and continued walking but Josh was a look more curious and he was slow, he was always looking up and back and stopping while doing so and people were bumping into them because of him.
"Just walk," Brownie said pulling and pushing.
"Sorry but I never saw anyone fly before," Josh said, back at walking again.
Anyone, that's what he said, as if demons were the same as humans, just with wings. The same way Brownie thought about them, or at least some of them, the ones she wasn't terrified of.
"They are not people," Samantha said, "They are animals, beasts, monsters."
She had a point.
"I don't know, if could just be a costume," Josh said.

Tuesday Travel 126: Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

The crowd was so slow that Brownie thought they would never manage to get out of there before the demons noticed there was something off about them. That was ludicrous, they were hidden not only by the crowd and by the pendant but the demons were probably scanning the energy for magic like she had been doing so often and Brownie had no idea if the pendant would hide that part of her too.

What did they really want with her? The formula wouldn't work for demons, it had made Sahel so sick. Maybe they wanted something from her past lives, something she didn't know about yet. That would be more plausible. She wanted to ask but it was too dangerous and too obscure. She was glad there were no real fire lions because the place would have probably burned to ashes with all the humans inside including her. She finally realised why the demons were doing everything underground even when they had the entire demon world for themselves. Nobody could really risk an attack there. It would be like trapping yourself at the same time, a sort of suicide mission. Exactly the kind Sahel's friend would take him too, he was probably already there now that she wasn't around to stop them. And she wouldn't have stopped them for long anyway. The thought came to her that she might never see him again, not because she was gone, not because her life was in danger right now or because the miscast spell would kill her but because he was foolish enough to start fight underground and make the entire earth collapse. He had done it before, he could definitely do it again.

"No we are not, now get a grip," Samntha said. "It's exactly as my mother described it, they are waiting and they will attack, we just need to get out first."

The exit was still far.

"Witch! We know you are here, we can see you in your dreams, show yourself!" The third demon yelled.

His voice echoed high in the ceiling of the cave and a wave of chill passed along Brownie's spine. They were here for her, they wanted her. There was a part of her that wanted to show herself, to make sure all those people came out of here unarmed. But there was no way they would stop, even if she showed herself and put herself in danger, there were no guaranty that they would let anyone else out. So Brownie didn't say anything and continued to walk toward the exit, feeling the nausea come up.

"We will find you," the demon said. "We will not stop until we find you."

"Who is he talking about?" Josh said.

"No idea," Brownie answered.

"But she is a witch," Josh said glancing at Samantha.

"Probably not that kind of witch," Brownie said.

"I don't think they know I exist, I don't dream about demons," Samantha said.

"Yeah, probably," Josh answered.
