Mystery Monday 161: Murder at the Conference 58

Hello and welcome to a new Mystery Monday.

I hope you had a great week-end. Here is a new little part of Murder at the Conference. Murder at the Conference is a stand alone sequel to Harajuku Kiss.

We start right were we left off last week:

“Or a job... there is a lot of competition in academia, it's only just you who don't compete with anyone because your view of science is a romantic one: “I do physics to increase the interest in general knowledge of mankind and push further our understanding of the universe. Most people are in for money or fame, and awards, and tons of papers, really, it's only you.”

I laughed but somehow I felt that he was right. When people started to complain that our work was competing with experimentally driven theory, yes, theory relying on experiments is a thing, I refused to compete. I just thought that people who would want to know both, it didn't matter. But in a way we are competing for computer time and if people read another paper, they might not have the time to read mine and so on. Competition everywhere, but in science, we really need each other, each of us can do their own thing and if someone stop working on their project it can be years, decades before someone else picks it up. Or it can even be forgotten forever for more "important" things. That's why I don't like it when people in science are forced to retired, they have unique and invaluable knowledge to bring to the world for the future generations and every little helps. And that's why I don't want to enter the competition because we need as many people as we can get to make things progress further.

Vampire Friday: Vampire Heart 376

Welcome to a new part of Vampire Heart unedited. Have you been bitten yet?

Summary of the previous episodes: Viorel has been tortured by his supposed family who wanted to have him burn in the sun. Strangely enough the sun didn't burn him as expected but Viorel has no memory of who he is. Following the advises of his supposed father, he left Sighișoara and is now traveling to the West. After some skirmish in a previous city, he found refuge on a boat. Viorel is now in Vienna. The little problem is that the guy at the inn was a bit of an asshole and helped capture Viorel thinking he was a vampire, which he is but nobody needs to know. Now there is a huge man (which I call the colossi) taking care of Viorel and a priest. They brought a girl. Torture my holy water... Fail. Viorel managed to confuse everyone, now he would like to get out of here. But the girl seems pretty useless. They still managed to escape and he left the girl to the care of the boat lady before going back to have two words with his captors but his power of persuasion were failing him. The priest wanted to crack a deal but Viorel is not really up to help his enemies. He finally got some blood but he can't risk to stay in Vienna. He travel to Linz were he stays a bit to learn German.
Viorel wanted to go to Praha but redirect himself toward Augsburg instead where he wants to get a horse, except that the horses are a bit scared of his vampirism and maybe something else. Viorel is really not a horse expert. Then he comes into an altercation with couple of people, he wants some fear in his blood. The girl Viorel has found seemed to enjoy the game. Viorel prepares for the nightmares that come with a feast of blood, in a rush to leave, he cross the dukedom of Lorrain.
We introduced Sorina, three weeks after the beginning of Viorel's escape.
Viorel dreamed of Sorina and woke up not really remembering anything. Traveling to Paris, he arrives at "La cour des miracles". He is rescued by a stranger who turned out to be Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist he was looking for. Nicolas does some strange experiment without Viorel's agreement. Some people are looking for Nicolas's secrets. On the other side of Europe, Sorina awakes and Viorel's past in haunting him. Viorel discovered that he can change into a wolf but that's not the easiest thing to handle. After finding out that a younger version of Nicolas might not be acting with his best interest at heart, Viorel decides to leave for the north. He is now traveling with two people, Alexej who needed to get out of Praha and Irina who he accidentally rescued.

Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last time.

There was some noise on the inside and I moved away quickly, hiding myself in the shadow, counting the steps of the men as they came closer trying to determine how many of them there were. Three, that was the time for three, if it had been one or two I might have been able to convince them to let me in, but three was another story. Not that I never fought three people before, just that it would take a lot more convincing. But at the same time if I was to take three of them down now. That would be that much less still standing when the real fight was to come. That might as well alert everyone and they would be running around in little group trying to get me. I waited until they stopped in front of the entrance and then waited a bit longer for them to come out but they didn't.

"I can't see anything," one said. "Are you sure this is working?"

"I'm sure, Jorge said there was a vampire in town, we set the church so that it wouldn't get in, here you go, it tried and now it's gone."

"Why would a vampire try to get in the church?" The same who asked the first question asked again.

He seemed younger than the other and new to the Jäger. I wasn't sure what they expected from him but he surely needed to be taught about things a bit better.

Thursday Fiction 365: Parallel Slip 2: Rebel

Welcome back to a new Thursday Fiction, it's been a while. We continue with Parallel Slip 2: Rebel where we left of last time, following Isabelle as she figure out who she really is.

He spun Isabelle around so that she was facing the pond once again. Her mother came to her side. She wasn't yelling, she was genuinely smiling and very quiet. It was strange to see her that way. But Isabelle couldn't help but feeling worried. There was nothing Clara or her mother or even Romulus could say that really made her feel like this was a good idea and if they were going to get the tracking away it would have been better to do it first instead of whatever Romulus wanted to show her but then again, how were they supposed to do that if they weren't in the same universe as her body? This was insane.

“You are thinking way too much,” Clara said in her head. “Magic is difficult to control if you can't focus your thoughts. You can't let them run wild like that.”

Wednesday Snippet 367: Fairy World 8

Welcome back to Wednesday Snippet. This week, we continue with Fairy World unedited just where we left off last week

"He said if Kallisto was to marry Kordelius a terrible thing would happen, that they should never meet," Kelpie said. He didn't want to talk about it but if he wanted his magic back, if he wanted out of here he had to cooperate or at least to look like he was. As soon as he could shift again, he would follow the demon who had called himself Poseidon to his world and get his angel back even if the other one inside of her killed him.

"But Kallisto didn't marry Kordelius," Azazel answered.

"But they still prepared the wedding," Kelpie said, "and you guys made a mess."

"Seriously, I have no idea what is going on," Odeon said.

"It's a very long story," Sahel said, "few months ago we came here on a rescue mission... again... and it turned into a blood bath."

"Except there wasn't all that much blood," Azazel said.

"I don't get it," Odeon said.

"I don't want to know," Torsti answered, "all I care about is getting out of here."

"Exactly my point," Azazel answered.
