Tuesday Travel 105: Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. Every Tuesday, I will be presenting an excerpt of Witch Raising: The Book of Fire, the book in which Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul, is undertaking an initiatory journey.

About Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

The people just in front of them entered the restaurant and the waiter came back outside to take their order.

Samantha ordered more food than Brownie and Josh put together.

"Wow," Josh said when she was finished.

"What?" Samantha answered.

"Nothing really, nothing," Josh said.

Brownie looked at Samantha a bit closer. She wasn't short, she was even taller than Brownie but she had a very thin build and she was definitely eating a lot, she had ate a lot at diner, she had skipped breakfast but she hadn't passed on Josh's pastry and if she was to eat everything she ordered, the only other people Brownie knew who ate that much were demons, but Samantha wasn't one, she didn't have wings, and herself and Gideon after that had done a hell lot of magic.

"I heard that you caste a spell last night," Brownie said. "What was it about?"

"I told you before, just random protection stuff," Samantha answered.

"She needs to be protected from me," Josh said. "I'm pretty terrible."

"Or maybe from the demon in that cave where we are going," Brownie said.

Josh laughed and Samantha shook her head.

She didn't want to talk about it and there was definitely something she wasn't saying. Brownie was burning to know more about the spell. But whenever she caste a spell by herself, she always needed to be alone and she wouldn't talk about it for at least twenty four hours just in case someone would change their behaviour and do something to stop it. While Samantha had done it in the middle of her dormitory room with everyone watching her and then had walked out as if nothing happened to brush her teeth. That was pretty weird for her, she had never thought about it but it was as if she were to cast a spell in the middle of the living room when Mikala was teaching Min-Ho the piano with Gökyüzü and Ethan watching a football match. It was almost impossible to conceive that she could actually cast a spell in the middle of such a mess, leave alone trying to concentrate to cast one. It was strange, Samantha ate as if her magic was depleted but at the same time a random protection spell wouldn't deplete her all that much and while something more powerful would require for her to have more intimacy and quiet surroundings.

Mystery Monday 106: Murder at the Conference 3

Welcome to Mystery Monday. This week, we continue with Murder at the Conference.

Let's get back where we left off with chapter 1 last time.

Christa was obviously in a bad mood, there was no need to have a discussion with her. I would have proposed a cup of tea but then Christa didn't like tea and took coffee and the coffee machine was a bit long to process the beverage so that wouldn't help. Christa didn't seem to need caffeine anyway. So I turned back to my screen and my own typos knowing that I would need to print it pretty soon, especially if it took more than an hour to read it. It would be the first read from my supervisor and certainly not the last but my boxes needed to be aligned or he would go crazy. Last time he hadn't corrected anything before they were aligned which was a pain because each correction asked for a new alignment. I would have thought that the content would be more important than the form.

“Plus I didn't want to go to this stupid conference in the first place, it's like working an entire week, without stopping, everybody there is going to be a physicist, nobody is ever going to talk about anything else and I don't want to leave my boyfriend for so long,” Christa continued.

“I promise you it's going to be fun, plus it's China, I have never been there, you have never been there and there is so much culture and so many things to see,” I answered. “Done!”

I took a few second to admire my art that would be tempered with, sighed and pressed the print button. The printer started with a short beep, followed by a longer one.

“Damn, I need to add paper,” I said standing up.

“Yeah, I think I used the last one. And China, I don't know, it's still communist you know, it can't be that good, especially where we are going, I mean it's not like if it was Bejing or Shanghai. I'm sure it's going to be weird. And how am I going to order at the restaurant, I don't speak Chinese. I don't even read kanji, I learned only 80, it's like first grade, the second grade kanjis wouldn't stick and I think it's useless because you always need to combine them anyway and they don't mean the same anymore. Plus the Chinese have different one. I won't even be able to read the food on the menu,” Christa continued.

WeWriWar 357: The House at The Crossing 65

Hello everybody and welcome for a new Sunday of writing with Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday!

How are you doing?

Let's continue with  "The House at the Crossing" and it's a prequel to Demon Soul and the demon series. It's a bit of a mix of Fantasy and Science-fiction.

It follows one of the books more obscure character as she first comes into the House. It's supposed to explain why there are so many people is the house and sort of where they come from and at the same time be a first time adventure for the main character as she needs to adapt to her new role and the new version of who she is.

Let's start right at where we left off last time, Teresa is trying to explain but Margo has trouble getting it.

“But... in that case,” my other self says.
“If she was new, we'll see multiples but since she has been here a while...”
“No,” Teresa said. “If a new Wendy arrives here today and pass the barrier of the realms around this house, she would directly become this Wendy, no time lapse, not for normal people.”
It's funny to hear Teresa say normal people and to realize that Wendy is the normal person while I am the abnormal one.
“So if she goes out, everybody goes out,” my other self says crossing her arms in front of her and pushing her back to the chair. She does have some attitude and she is clearly not convinced.
I wonder if she is going to ask Wendy to go out for a while and verify. You know, as an experiment. But she doesn't.
“I can't go out,” Wendy says she seems a bit distraught.

Vampire Friday: Vampire Heart 320

Welcome to a new part of Vampire Heart unedited. Have you been bitten yet? Sign up to be part of our awesome Vampire Friday blog hop team! You know you want to!

Summary of the previous episodes: Viorel has been tortured by his supposed family who wanted to have him burn in the sun. Strangely enough the sun didn't burn him as expected but Viorel has no memory of who he is. Following the advises of his supposed father, he left Sighișoara and is now traveling to the West. After some skirmish in a previous city, he found refuge on a boat. Viorel is now in Vienna. The little problem is that the guy at the inn was a bit of an asshole and helped capture Viorel thinking he was a vampire, which he is but nobody needs to know. Now there is a huge man (which I call the colossi) taking care of Viorel and a priest. They brought a girl. Torture my holy water... Fail. Viorel managed to confuse everyone, now he would like to get out of here. But the girl seems pretty useless. They still managed to escape and he left the girl to the care of the boat lady before going back to have two words with his captors but his power of persuasion were failing him. The priest wanted to crack a deal but Viorel is not really up to help his enemies. He finally got some blood but he can't risk to stay in Vienna. He travel to Linz were he stays a bit to learn German.
Viorel wanted to go to Praha but redirect himself toward Augsburg instead where he wants to get a horse, except that the horses are a bit scared of his vampirism and maybe something else. Viorel is really not a horse expert. Then he comes into an altercation with couple of people, he wants some fear in his blood. The girl Viorel has found seemed to enjoy the game. Viorel prepares for the nightmares that come with a feast of blood, in a rush to leave, he cross the dukedom of Lorrain.
We introduced Sorina, three weeks after the beginning of Viorel's escape.
Viorel dreamed of Sorina and woke up not really remembering anything. Traveling to Paris, he arrives at "La cour des miracles". He is rescued by a stranger who turned out to be Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist he was looking for. Nicolas does some strange experiment without Viorel's agreement. Some people are looking for Nicolas's secrets. On the other side of Europe, Sorina awakes and Viorel's past in haunting him. Viorel discovered that he can change into a wolf but that's not the easiest thing to handle. After finding out that a younger version of Nicolas might not be acting with his best interest at heart, Viorel decides to leave for the north. He is now traveling with two people, Alexej who needed to get out of Praha and Irina who he accidentally rescued.

Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last week.

He didn’t bother to knock, I had left the door open anyway and the inquiry was enough to announce him. He was carrying the hot wine I had asked for. I sight and decided not to lie, after all there were still parts that were believable in the story.
“The lady was scared that it might be a dragon in the court so she fabricated herself a ladder and decided to hide in the forest. She and I will need a hot bath,” I showed him my clothes piled up in a corner.
He opened eyes so large that I thought they were going to pop out of his face. He left the glasses of hot wine on the table near the door and turned to the corridor to go to Irina’s room.
I followed him a bit worried.
“I found her fainted,” I said.
“I’ll go get my wife,” he said looking worried.
I notice the traces of bites in Irina’s neck that hadn’t been healed completely yet.
“That’s a good idea,” I said smiling. The smile felt unnatural on my checks but I hoped he didn’t notice. He walked passed me in a hurry.
“I’ll get the bath ready too, good lord,” he said signing himself.
It was a gesture I hadn’t seen in a while and it wasn’t really reassuring.
I needed to revive Irina before they arrived. I could still hear his foot step on the stairs. I shook her a bit then more, it didn’t work. The pulse was steady and her respiration calm. She looked like she was sleeping but that was really strange. If she was she would have woken up. I plunged my finger in the hot wine and wet her lips, they took the reddish color of the wine, redder than even Irina’s blood might be. She moved her eyelid and her fingers which reassured me a bit. I made her sit and brought the glass to her lips. It was really hot, the contact was warming my fingers way too much for me to hold it too long. I wet her lips with a bit more liquid this time. The smell of the wine was hidden by the smell of the forest in her hair. I had just time to pushed the glass away that she started to cough uncontrollably holding her chest and taking deep breaths as trying to find some air. I didn’t need to carry her up anymore, she was wide awake.
