Mystery Monday 22: Harajuku Kiss

Welcome Mystery Monday. For this weekly writing blog post, I will be presenting snippets of my novel Harajuku Kiss, a mystery romance in Japan.
I hope you'll enjoy following our heroine through her thoughts and adventures.

About Harajuku Kiss

At times, life can be so depressing. She is walking her usual recovery tour in Harajuku, finishing with a crepe, trying to forget that her boyfriend dumped her once again for the week-end... When the unthinkable happens... A boy stops in front of her in the street and kisses her, in the middle of the street, before running away.
Trying to discover more about him, she is dragged into a dangerous game of mystery. A biologist has been murdered and a deadly virus is on the loose. First suspect: the mysterious Harajuku's stranger.

Here is the snippet for this week

You don’t have time to know them or to remember their faces, unless they do or wear something special, and by the time you reach home, the incident has disappeared from your mind. But in Harajuku, everyone is special, making me feel ordinary and particularly out of place. People have a reason to come here. A boiling sense of purpose and direction contrasts with my indecision as they walk along the street up or down in a rather ants-like busy way.

Loners were rare in these neon colored streets and the togetherness appealed to me.

Malena pulled on Hitomi’s trousers. “Can I come too? I want to see the candles.”
Hitomi and Grenadine looked understandingly at each other.
“Not this time. It will be a really long walk and you’ll be too tired, you’ll join next time.” Hitomi walked quickly towards the cupboard and got some glasses out while Grenadine got forks from the drawer making as much noises as possible to avoid Malena. Going shopping was the only way for them to get rid of their little siblings and it was out of question to be trailing Malena behind and having her complain and ask when they were going to go home.

Vampire Friday: Vampire Heart 236

Welcome to a new part of Vampire Heart unedited. Have you been bitten yet? Sign up to be part of our awesome Vampire Friday blog hop team! You know you want to!

Summary of the previous episodes: Viorel has been tortured by his supposed family who wanted to have him burn in the sun. Strangely enough the sun didn't burn him as expected but Viorel has no memory of who he is. Following the advises of his supposed father, he left Sighișoara and is now traveling to the West. After some skirmish in a previous city, he found refuge on a boat. Viorel is now in Vienna. The little problem is that the guy at the inn was a bit of an asshole and helped capture Viorel thinking he was a vampire, which he is but nobody needs to know. Now there is a huge man (which I call the colossi) taking care of Viorel and a priest. They brought a girl. Torture my holy water... Fail. Viorel managed to confuse everyone, now he would like to get out of here. But the girl seems pretty useless. They still managed to escape and he left the girl to the care of the boat lady before going back to have two words with his captors but his power of persuasion were failing him. The priest wanted to crack a deal but Viorel is not really up to help his enemies. He finally got some blood but he can't risk to stay in Vienna. He travel to Linz were he stays a bit to learn German.
Viorel wanted to go to Praha but redirect himself toward Augsburg instead where he wants to get a horse, except that the horses are a bit scared of his vampirism and maybe something else. Viorel is really not a horse expert. Then he comes into an altercation with couple of people, he wants some fear in his blood. The girl Viorel has found seemed to enjoy the game. Viorel prepares for the nightmares that come with a feast of blood, in a rush to leave, he cross the dukedom of Lorrain.
We introduced Sorina, three weeks after the beginning of Viorel's escape.
Viorel dreamed of Sorina and woke up not really remembering anything. Traveling to Paris, he arrives at "La cour des miracles". He is rescued by a stranger who turned out to be Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist he was looking for. Nicolas does some strange experiment without Viorel's agreement. Some people are looking for Nicolas's secrets. On the other side of Europe, Sorina awakes and Viorel's past in haunting him. Viorel discovered that he can change into a wolf but that's not the easiest thing to handle. After finding out that a younger version of Nicolas might not be acting with his best interest at heart, Viorel decides to leave for the north. He is now traveling with two people, Alexej who needed to get out of Praha and Irina who he accidentally rescued.

Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last week.

Her hands on mine were cold due to the lack of blood. I knew that lack of blood for human was dangerous, I knew the changes in their thoughts and body while drinking but I had never had the opportunity to study the effect with time. I wonder if Irina was ever going to get completely better or if she would reach and always decreasing threshold of health every time I was to drink from her. I had taken a lot and it had been hard to stop, I needed to be really careful next time.
“I don’t drink alcohol,” I said.
“Why not?” she asked. “It makes you warm inside, decrease your muscles pain, makes you relax, there is nothing wrong with it. Of course if you have too much your inside can’t take it and it needs out and it can also make your body feel funny and hard to control and your mind wonder to places you had never imagined but one cup won’t kill you.”
“I have seen the effect it has on humans and it’s not something I want to experience,” I said pushing the glass away but her hands were still on mine keeping me holding the cup.
I had trouble to maintain her gaze. I knew it was impossible for her to be pushing thoughts in my mind but I still raised the goblet and took a sip of cider. The taste was fruity like apple, something seemed to be jumping on my tongue I wasn’t too sure I could swallow and it was really sweet.
“So, how is it?” she asked.
I took some times to smell the draw yellow liquid reflecting the light of the candles in my cup, it only smelled like bad apple, with a little bit of dust smell covering the alcohol. I took another sip to be sure, once again I had those things jumping on my tongue up to my palate.
“I’m not sure, it feels strange in the mouth,” I said.

Thursday Fiction 230: Parallel Slip

Welcome back to a new part of Parallel Slip, where we follow the adventures of Frederique through her slip in different parallel universes.

Let's start right where we left off last week.

"Hum," I said sitting down on the captain seat. This was bad, this was really really bad. "Let's see. You send a message about my insubordination to the confederation, that message wasn't an order, you send them a request to see if they were going to agree with you or agree with me, am I correct?"
"I have here in my hand an order from the confederation to have you contained until we get back home," Tucker said.
"And you want a change of pilot, when we have no other on board, are you going to pilot by yourself?" I asked.
I was playing a dangerous game, I knew he had a pilot already planned from the start that he was preparing a mutineery in the middle of space what I didn't know however was that he would do it in the middle of an asteroid belt when the spaceship was shaking all sense out of everybody.
"We do have another pilot," Tucker said.
"Oh yes, I forgot your dear friend the cleaning lady," I said. "Now cards on the table Tucker, what do you got?" What do you want from me and why are you trying to sabotage us going to Antares?"
I could read the surprise on his face. That was the worse game of bluff I ever played because I knew nothing, I had nothing and I would have cursed out loud at Michelle for getting me into this mess.
"I want you to obey order, follow the rules, not putting everyone in danger..." Tucker said.
The easy way out. He was basically telling me that if I had been a good girl, nothing would have happen which I knew was bullshit, he was on my case before I even let Fin get his way with the destruction of the last threat.
