WeWriWar 298: The House at the Crossing 3

 

Hello everybody and welcome for a new Sunday of writing with Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday!

I decided to change things a little bit so for the next few months, I'm going to present you my new WIP. It's called "The House at the Crossing" and it's a prequel to Demon Soul and the demon series. It's a bit of a mix of Fantasy and Science-fiction.

It follows one of the books more obscure character as she first come into the House. It's suppose to explain why there are so many people is the house and sort of where they come from and at the same time be a first time adventure for the main character as she needs to adapt to her new role and the new version of who she is. 

Since it's a WIP, and I still haven't finished the first draft, it's still really row. Hopefully, we'll see some improvement as it goes.

Let's start right at where we left off last week!

Except, you're not stupid, you just make mistakes because that what's people do, or sometime, like just now, someone else makes a mistake and you are the one paying for it. And even if you don't listen to people, you can still hear them, and sometimes, it does matter, at least, until you can manage to make it not matter but that's not something they'll teach you. Like “you're just over reacting and being a baby”, like this helps!

So yes, last time, I went to my dad, for 3 long interminable months. The thing about my dad is that he doesn't blame, instead he doesn't actually know how to act around people, hear "extreme introvert". So everything was always awkward, awkward conversation, awkward house rules, awkward being in the same room. It wasn't bad per se, it just had me on edge every second I spent at home.

You think I have mummy issues, or daddy issues, or maybe both. Truth is, I have issues with every one.

Let's start right at where we left off last week!

Why did I go to my father's instead of going back to my mother that day was still sort of a mystery. More like I thought half of me would go to my mum and half of me would go to my dad just like it had been after the divorce, except, it didn't work that way. My father and I became estranged, because she wouldn't let it go. Then it had seemed, to be a good idea, and he lived closer to the university. I thought, at least if I lived with him, I wouldn't have to drop out.

Also to be honest, there was a part of me that didn't want to admit to my mother that I had a problem. I already knew the blame that would come out of her mouth and would never stop for the rest of my life. It's so funny how your parents always insist that if something bad happens to you, you have to tell them, sort of like they would fix it for you in a way, help you.

Fact is, they never help, not really, it was just words, never ending words of blame and “how can you be so stupid?” and well you know “just don't listen to other people”, “it doesn't matter what they say”.

I have no idea why I was once again on the door step of an unfamiliar house. Of course, I had heard about this house; of course, I had come here on my own, well, almost on my own. My son was asleep in the portable crib I had with me, that and a suitcase with my clothes, his clothes, toys, and some of my books, nothing much more than that.

It had happened before, in my 20^th. When I started college, I was sharing a room and my adorable roommate ended up emptying my bank account and taking off with everything I had. So I had to go back to live with my father for a while. An unfamiliar house it was, I hadn't seen him for eight years before that, since the divorce. My mother, well, she had been the one taking everything, including me. All she left him was the dog and a very bad reputation, which ended up to be all lies.

Brownie is a normal girl, or so she thinks. She likes to chat with her sisters about random things, she likes fashion and she is member of the fashion club at school. But one day, as her little brother gets really sick because of a curse placed on him, she meets this really strange guy who cures him absorbing the baby's sickness within himself. As he is about to fall from his new acquired fever, Brownie sees Yue's soul and immediately falls in love with him. But Yue is not a human, Yue is a demon.

Brownie and Yue will built their love story until....

Plot:

Until Yue's soul is stolen. There is nothing left of their love. The purple light dancing in Yue's grey eyes is gone. Forever? Not quite. Brownie is desperate to find it back. And to get a soul stolen by demons, she needs to go deep into dark magic! But Brownie is not a witch, she is just looking for a spell powerful enough to bring her love back. When an amateur starts playing with strong magic without preparation and without caring for the consequences, things turn wrong...

Malena pulled on Hitomi’s trousers. “Can I come too? I want to see the candles.”

Hitomi and Grenadine looked understandingly at each other.

“Not this time. It will be a really long walk and you’ll be too tired, you’ll join next time.” Hitomi walked quickly towards the cupboard and got some glasses out while Grenadine got forks from the drawer making as much noises as possible to avoid Malena. Going shopping was the only way for them to get rid of their little siblings and it was out of question to be trailing Malena behind and having her complain and ask when they were going to go home.

“I see. I’ve wanted to go buy some candles for my room. I used most of them last week but we can always split and meet in the centre once we’re done.”

“Oh, I wanted to go to the new shop for ages,” Grenadine said.

Hitomi giggled. This new shop had already been open for three months but each time Grenadine wanted to go there she always ended up spending all her money on coloured pencils, paint and sketch notebooks.

She pushed Grenadine with her elbow. “This time we’re going to go there first, I love that shop,” she said.

Even while being careful with her fish pieces, they still had found a way to creep themselves everywhere and it took her a long half hour and multiple attempts to shampoo before taking away the blood and flesh stuck in her hair. She put on her pyjamas before putting her clothes in the washing machine and set the program to run straight away. The nice smell of the shower gel and shampoo had invaded her bedroom, covering the disgusting smell of her clothes. She lay down on the bed looking at the aquamarine, reflecting the soft sunbeam in her hand. Waiting for the human shops to open, she fell asleep. Morning sleep had always been more restful than sleeping at night, as if the sunlight could push the darkness of her nightmares in the corners of her mind. Noises in the kitchen downstairs woke her up with a sudden burst. She looked at the alarm clock and panicked.

He disappeared and Dylan rushed after him in the corridor, avoiding the sunlight.

“Thanks,” Brownie whispered looking ashamed.

“My pleasure.” Dylan winked at her before disappearing, following Viorel.

Brownie put the incense and the aquamarine stone in a drawer, then entered the bathroom and got rid of her clothes. She turned on the shower and looked at herself in the mirror waiting for the water to warm up. One good thing done, she suddenly felt like she could sleep forever. Getting the rest of the list later on this afternoon would be way easier. The warm water sliding softly on her skin and the noise of the shower in her ears were making her feel better.

These words had the immediate effect to calm Brownie down. Viorel had turned back to look at them from the end of the corridor. “Don’t you try anything that foolish ever again on your own, or I’ll make sure it is the last time.”

If Dylan was always considered to be funny and ignorant, Viorel, on the contrary was like the living encyclopaedia of the night world and magic.

“That makes you invisible to demons, I suppose,” he said walking away and turning the medallion in his hand.

Brownie jumped on Dylan punching him with both fists.

“You knew it, you knew it and you told me to cut the fish!” she was yelling at him furiously.

Dylan laughed even more.

He dug his hand in her pocket, got the medallion out of it, and looked at it carefully.

“Very interesting indeed.” 

“Oh, that was pretty useless, but thanks anyway.” Brownie was about to enter her bedroom when Dylan's laugh stopped her.

“More efficient than the fish I suppose.” Viorel had turned back, unable to bear the smell anymore.

As she reached the corridor of the second floor leading to her bedroom, Viorel and Dylan were waiting for her in a dark corner.

“See, I told you she was going to be ok.”

Viorel slapped the back of Dylan’s head.

“Just give it back and do whatever you want.” Dylan said to Brownie, rubbing the back of his head.

“What are you talking about?”

Brownie opened her bedroom door leaving some ray of sunshine emerging in the corridor, Dylan’s medallion had completely slipped out of her mind.

Dylan jumped aside. “Hey, be careful with that.”

She took it out to look at it, the stone was full of the reflection of the early sun and it looked like ocean water, maybe more brilliant and transparent. She hadn't needed to buy it but had felt a sudden urge to hold it. 

It will make a nice pendent that I can wear as soon as I don’t smell a like dead fish anymore, she thought.

She laughed with relief, her nerves suddenly giving up the stress. She reached home faster than expected. The way back was always the shortest.

She left the fish pieces in the large bin outside. She didn't stink as much when she passed the front door, but she needed a good shower and to put her clothes in the washing machine as soon as possible.

WeWriWar 284: Demon Soul

Welcome to a new excerpt of DEMON SOUL for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday. 

 

Pre-Plot:

Brownie is a normal girl, or so she thinks. She likes to chat with her sisters about random things, she likes fashion and she is member of the fashion club at school. But one day, as her little brother gets really sick because of a curse placed on him, she meets this really strange guy who cures him absorbing the baby's sickness within himself. As he is about to fall from his new acquired fever, Brownie sees Yue's soul and immediately falls in love with him. But Yue is not a human, Yue is a demon.

Brownie and Yue will built their love story until....

Plot:

Until Yue's soul is stolen. There is nothing left of their love. The purple light dancing in Yue's grey eyes is gone. Forever? Not quite. Brownie is desperate to find it back. And to get a soul stolen by demons, she needs to go deep into dark magic! But Brownie is not a witch, she is just looking for a spell powerful enough to bring her love back. When an amateur starts playing with strong magic without preparation and without caring for the consequences, things turn wrong...

Let's start right where we left off last week! 

“There is nothing you can do with those two together,” the witch said.

“Nothing you know of,” Brownie answered finding strength she wouldn’t have ever thought herself capable of. She paid for the items, buried them into the only pocket of her coat free from fish pieces, and went out of the shop as fast as she could without running. 

Brownie looked up at the end of the path, she was almost there. She walked carefully not to collide with drunken demons coming out bars, finding the distance towards the end of the street terribly long. She reached it without problem and ran through the city centre without looking back.

She stopped, out of breath half way, before she reached her house, still clenching her fist around the aquamarine stone in her pocket.
