Last summer, I went to visit the 上野動物公園 (Ueno zoo). This zoo is famous for it's pandas and for successfully breeding
many endangered species, and it is part of the breeding program with other zoo around the world in order to conserve wild life.
The panda are directly at the entrance of the zoo and this area is very crowded. The zoo is very large and you can take a tram to go from one side to the other. It wasn't possible to visit everything in only one afternoon but it was a lot of fun. Travel table of content
Yesterday was the 15th of March. For me, it's the end of the 6 Week Challenge and the start of Read More Or Die round 1.5.
The 6 Week Challenge is a contest for learning a foreign language. Basically you record everything you do in that language, reading, writing, grammar, watching drama, listening to music, anything. Here explanation on how to register is provided on the 6 Week Challenge page. This round of the challenge started on first of February. I started a little bit late but I finished third. with almost 195 hours of learning Japanese. I can feel the progresses due to intensive learning. The next round starts on first of May, please join me, you can decide to learn any foreign language.
I already participated to the first round in January. This round is a bit smaller as it holds only for 15 day, from the 15th or March to the 1st of April.
Since I moved to Sendai last November, there has been a lot of snowfalls. I come from a place where you are lucky if there is one day of snow a year and I never lived in a place where you can have more.
All this snow is a new thing to me. I enjoy the prettiness but I don't like the cold. Even when it stop snowing and get warmer for a few days a sudden fall in temperature inevitably leads to snow the next morning, with slippery ground and late buses (even later than usual).
Brownie is a normal girl, or so she thinks. She likes to chat with her sisters about random things, she likes fashion and she is member of the fashion club at school. But one day, as her little brother gets really sick because of a curse placed on him, she meets this really strange guy who cures him absorbing the baby's sickness within himself. As he is about to fall from his new acquired fever, Brownie sees Yue's soul and immediately falls in love with him. But Yue is not a human, Yue is a demon.
Brownie and Yue will built their love story until....
Plot:
Until Yue's soul is stolen. There is nothing left of their love. The purple light dancing in Yue's grey eyes is gone. Forever? Not quite. Brownie is desperate to find it back. And to get a soul stolen by demons, she needs to go deep into dark magick! But Brownie is not a witch, she is just looking for a spell powerful enough to bring her love back. When an amateur starts playing with strong magick without preparation and without caring for the consequences, things turn wrong...

Location:
The main location of the story is a large family house. This house is very particular as it is located at the crossing of several portals leading to different kind of worlds: the wizard world, the fairy world and the demon world. This house is a sort of sanctuary for children coming from those worlds and needing a safe place to stay in. The older kids take care of the younger in turn. This house was build by a mysterious person they call "mum" and whorarely appears.

The Characters:
Brownie: Brownie is the main character. She is deeply in love with a Demon. It's already complicated enough as it is. She would do anything for love. Like most teenagers she is really sensitive and emotional, she hides her emotions not to worry the people around but it often backfires.
Yue: Yue is a demon and Brownie's boyfriend. He has a lot of problems with his family and can only count on Brownie. He also has problem with something called the dark shadow, an entity which seems to be following him around and can at time control his body. When his Soul is taken away, he slowly loses the memory of who he is and refuses to fight to get it back. In the process he also forgets everything about Brownie.
Sahel:Sahel is a Magically born demon. He has special powers that he can't always control properly. He will have to leave his comfortable home in the human world to learn about himself in the demon world. He has an elephant plushy he carries everywhere. He likes to eat a lot and is always hungry. His favorite dish is spaghettis with strawberry sauce.
Gideon: Gideon is a wizard. He is really good at repairing broken things. He is learning Magick in the wizard world.
Viorel: Viorel is a vampire. He likes to interfere in the affair of the people in the house, with Gideon and Isakael, he makes sure that the house is protected against the surrounding world.
Isakael: Isakael is an angel who hates to be an angel. He considers that he should be perfect and as nice as everyone expects him to be because he is an angel. It's really hard for him to put all the efforts to reach such impossible perfection. People can go to him for advices but there are no guaranties for them being any good or bad. He is a little pessimistic.
Luna: Luna is a little human girl with mysterious blue hair who can see fairies. She likes to play with them and thinks she knows everything about the fairy world. She doesn't like demons very much.

It has been a long time since I posted about progresses on "Demon World". The last time was at the start of NaNoFiMo which means that the novel should be finished by now but well it isn't. I could pretty much list the reasons why it isn't, but that sounds a bit like making excuses and lately I think I have been making a lot of excuses for myself about why I don't do things and this needs to stop. I don't even need excuses, I can yell it (well maybe not in my office at lunch break when other people are not having a break yet) but so yeah, I didn't freaking write for more than two months!
So instead of complaining, about what's should be here and is not, let's talk about what's new.
Well, a big jump of 18272 words,
with a lot of very weird things happening in that cave and out of it.
Now it feels like nobody is safe anymore, the novel has taken a turn for the worse and the characters are trying to rise out of the battle, whether they are facing outer or inner challenges, it seems to go all wrong...
If you have read my other novels you had probably noticed that in general they start from point A with one main character and we mainly follow him/her until the end. What is different with "Demon World" is that there are many stories for many characters going on at the same time so that I'm jumping from one to another with every chapter (thingies separated with ****). It's a very different way of writing and as all stories are supposed to converge to the end together nicely if some of my characters decide to act up on their own instead of going nicely according to the plan, things can turn up really, really crazy a lot faster than when the story is linear. This is the fancy version for saying: "What a mess?" or "What the heck is going on?"
Actually, I have no idea because, I have some characters who really don't like to follow the rules. I always thought that Kelpie, was pretty disobedient, which is the reason why "Demon and Fairy" has now been cut into two parts. He shouldn't have been involved so much, it shouldn't have happened this way but well the chances are for the better. But now Kelpie is nothing compared to Azazel and Torsti, really, Torsti just gave in the last parts a totally new version of the story, Azazel is being following Sahel around and acting like a busy bee. Why is the reason of all that? They just gained purposes. Instead of just being a bystander helpful for the main character to reach their goal, they are started to have a goal on their own and created a better defined purpose for their own existence. My characters are growing up, evolving, maturing. This happened slowly with Azazel and quickly with Torsti. After all Azazel had been through the entire fairy world before reaching this point but Torsti has been created only for "Demon World" and is therefore a pretty "new" character, but he is taking one of the main role in the discovery of what is actually really going on in that demon-filled cave.
Looking at characters who tend to disobey one other good example is Sahel except that he is divided into two choices, if he obeys, he'll get what he wants but he doesn't know that, so he disobeys and decide to try for himself to get to his goal and get sick in the way. Actually his current state is making me sick too, I'm getting tired of characters unable to handle themselves. Sahel is scared of Yue and doesn't want to face him, he is scared by the fact that Yue was with Brownie first and that he wouldn't even exist if their love story had been progressing without soul-stealing demons passing by. He always wonders what would actually happen if Yue was to come back.... you'll see why really really soon but not today.
You may think that I should have it coming after all my characters are demons, not angels... well I might have the angels coming up and I'm almost sure that they won't behave either.
As you may have notice I'm being very excited write now and therefore I'm writing a lot, I guess that's mean part nine will come sometimes soon... but we can never be so sure. But at least while I take time to write it up, you have time to enjoy reading part eight.
Last night was the end of my reading Marathon. In January I participated to a contest call "Read more or die". This contest is organized several times a year by someone who realized that you can improve your foreign language skills dramatically just by reading more, reading something, anything, by participating to another contest of the kind himself.
The rules of this contest is to read as much as possible in up to three different foreign languages from the first of January until the 31th of January at midnight. To participate you just need a twitter account (that makes it easier) and to follow the rules.
I registered Japanese, German and English. I only read papers in English for most part or edited "Demon and fairy" (more on that coming soon), I didn't read anything in German (my german books were hiding in my boxes) but I read a lot of mangas (I finished 花よ男子, and started 花ざかりの君たちへ。)
I found out about this contest only on the 9th of January so I started already with an handicap but there is nothing to win in that contest except of course new awesome language skill. I decided to aim for being in the top 10% (that's a bit of a fullish goal though but I didn't know how much I could read) At the moment I register 10% meant to be at least 26th. At the end of the month it meant being 29th but I decided to still aim for the 26th position. I reached it last night but midnight coming in Japan faster than in any other country, I become 27th soon after. That's not too bad for a first time.
Here are my reading progresses.
Next time (in April) I intent to read at least 1000 pages (which is 5000 pages for mangas according to the rules) and only in Japanese. Normally that's more than achievable especially that I have 2 more months or insane reading to train.
