About Witch Raising.

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

“It's always old men talking about dirt and their wife talking about the university banquets they attend or their children,” She turned to Brownie. “We do not have children.”

“But you attend a lot of university banquets,” the professor answered with an amused face.

“Which I can't talk about because of course I'm so lucky to have all that free times due to lack of children,” Margarethe answered.

“I am a literature professor. I do research at the university... like their husbands,” Margarethe said to Brownie. She seemed to want to show that she wasn't just staying idle at home.

Brownie didn't really understand what was the problem with children and talking about them. She had a lot of little siblings, they were annoying and they were also really cute but since that wasn't a topic of interest in this case she refrained to make any comments on the matter.

“And what are you studying?” She asked.

Brownie called to the attention of the waiter and ordered a cordon bleu with a side of French fries.

“Don't you want a starter?” Professor Flickwick asked.

Brownie had never really thought about it but if the people she was eating with were having a starter, she had better do the same. She asked for a salad of tomatoes with mozzarella cheese. For some reason it made the professor smile. Brownie didn't know what to say so she took a sip from her glass of water.

“Are you here for the conference?” She finally asked remembering a flyer she had seen on the tail wagons of the train about a conference on geology being held on board.

“Unfortunately yes, he is,” Margarethe answered.

“As you can see, my wife isn't really happy about being an accompanying person when I go to conferences,” professor Fliggerty said.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

“It's from Persifica in the sixteen century, there was an female explorer who didn't like to be dictated who she owed to be so she build her own boat with brown wood and people started calling her Brownie. It has nothing to so with the chocolate pastry I'm afraid,” Brownie said.

“So it is very interesting, I never heard of this story. Have you Margarethe?”

“Not at all Henry,” Margarethe looking at her husband.

She seemed quite younger than he was but looking carefully, she had expression wrinkles in the corners of her eyes that betrayed her true age.

“It's an hidden part of the peninsula history, I guess,” Brownie said. 

A hidden part that nobody knew about and that she didn't bother to explain any more, since A nobody ever believed her and B well, Yue had called her his little choco cookie so after that the food reference of her name didn't seem so bad any more. Generally, she just told people her mother was hungry when she named her. It was easier.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

“How do you do?” The woman said in a very British accent.

“How do you do?” Brownie answered trying not to be awkward. 

She had learned it was the proper way to great people but it felt a bit strange to actually say it to someone. There was no “How do you dos” where she came from. People were more likely to even skip saying hello before starting the chatter, even at school as far as she remembered, the teacher would enter the class and ask for silence without saying hello to anyone. Brownie swallowed in a dry throat realizing how much her life had been lacking manners so far. She was definitely out of place in here.

“I'm Brownie,” she said looking at the man.

“How interesting!” professor Fliggerty answered. “I never hears of such a name before.”

He looked at her intensely. He had very tiny little eyes, that almost disappeared in his round face. They were really dark and somehow warm. It made Brownie at ease to say more.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

“You know how it is in those trains, always crowded, no place were to sit, if you travel alone, you have to accommodate the table for the large groups.”

Brownie hadn't really thought about that. If there wasn't any seat, she would have waited. She never thought it was all right so sit with perfect strangers but apparently his couple was used to traveling in trains and had learned the subtleties of the social gatherings.

The waiter asked for Brownie's ticket. She showed her the pass allowing her to change trains all the way to Evergreen. He pointed at the three pages of the menu she could order from free of charge. There were other side dishes she could get with a little extra. That was a welcomed surprised, she couldn't say no to “free” food, especially on her tight budget.

The waiter left the menu in front of Brownie and went back to serving water to other customers. She kept the menu opened in front of her trying not to hide behind it even if that was what she really wanted to do.

“But I'm being rude,” the old man said. “I'm professor Fliggerty, and this is my wife Margarethe .”

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

The waiter was about to give Brownie an empty table on the left, when he was interrupted but a man.

“She can sit here,” the man said pointing at a seat in front of him.

He was almost bold, with only a little bit of dark hair from the side of his head combed on top sideways. The had a large prominent mustache which seemed combed as well trimmed just above his upper lips. He was wearing a three pieces suit with a golden chain hanging from a front pocket and a little piece of red handkerchief pointing out. He sat next to a woman in a off the shoulder blue dress with a bracelet of flower around her left wrist.

The waiter showed Brownie to the seat in front of them.

“I wouldn't want to intrude,” Brownie said hoping that the waiter would place her on her own table.

“Not at all,” the man said “we just ordered, if you're quick, you might be able to get your food right away.”

The waiter smile encouragingly. Brownie felt trapped but she had no choice but to take the seat near the window in front of the man.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

She had three wagons to cross toward the head of the train to get to the wagon restaurant. She had no idea what was on the menu. The most she could think of was that at least they were meant to have sandwiches but it didn't matter much. She was so hungry she could eat anything

The restaurant was not what she had expected at all but after all, this train wasn't the same as the one she had been riding when she left home. She thought she was going to get one of this modern counter with some food wagon that were supposed to move around but never did, with only snacks. Instead, the wagon restaurant was more like the rest of the train. It had that long trip, old fashion feel to it. There were tables with four seats each on each side of the center corridor, they all had table clothes and even vases with flowers in them. Heavy red curtains hung at the train's window. There was no food counter like she had expected.

People looked at her when she entered and Brownie felt strangely out of place. She would have doubled back if it wasn't for a waiter dressed in black with a white apron at the front and a towel on his arm calling for her. Brownie left like she had just traveled back in time or reached a very rich side of society. All in all, she didn't feel like she belonged here, though most of the passengers where dressed just like her and didn't seem too fresh either from the long hours on the train.

“Miss,” the waiter said. “Please have a seat, are you joining company or do you like a table for yourself?”

“I don't know anyone,” Brownie said.

The excerpt starts right where we left off last week.

She stood up and stretch looking through the window, wondering when they were finally going to get out of the desert and enter the mountain zone. It felt like she had been in the train forever even though she had only passed the first morning in it. It was going to be a long long trip.
The mountains were in the distance but they had been there for a while now, there were huge grey clouds towering over them so that Brownie couldn't really see the top. Still, it didn't seem that they were going to reach the edge of the desert any time soon.
There were some crows flying near the train and taking the train too by standing on the roof. Brownie could hear them croaking above her head. She wondered if the crows knew where they were going or if the train would take them too far from home.
She took the little key hanging near the compartment's door it had a strange golden colour and it was cold in her hand. She wondered how many people lost their compartment keys in the train. The key was so small.
She pushed the door open and closed. Daphy was long gone and it seemed that she hadn't placed a spell for when Brownie would come out. At least that was a good thing. Brownie let the door close after her and locked it with the little golden key before sliding it in her pocket.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last week.

Brownie was done with the staring contest. She moved to her left to open the cabin's door which slid violently to the side, grabbed the handle of Daphy's suitcase and threw it out. The suit case hit the wall opposite and clicked open spreading half the content in the corridor.

“Why did you do that for?”

Daphy pushed Brownie out of the way and went out in the corridor after her suitcase. Brownie was amazed at herself for just gathering the guts to do that but even more at the content of the suitcase. It was all candles and wires, and glittering stones and pots of herbs. It was a witchcase more than a suitcase. Daphy was on the floor trying to gather everything back. Brownie felt a bit sorry for her.

“I think you better find another cabin,” she said before closing the door.

Brownie had been trying to read the same page for over half an hour. Her stomach was rambling with hunger but she didn't dare to open the door again.

Daphy had left with her suitcase a while ago, but Brownie was worried to find someone else in her compartment again if she was to leave it again. She shook her head and finally closed the book. There was no way she was going to get anything done right now between her thoughts and the hunger.

Brownie hadn't notice how tall the other girl was until now, almost a full head above her but Brownie was staring right back up at her.

“I'm not a maniac, I didn't do it on purpose,” Daphy said.

One of her teeth was slightly in front of the other, it was a bit distracting when being in a staring contest.

“And I didn't ask for you to come here, I didn't ask for any of this either,” Brownie said. “Fact is on purpose or not, you could have killed me, and even more ridiculous, you're not even sorry about it. You didn't learn that casting spell on people without their consent is bad and you even call me a bitch for almost dying.”

“Yeah because you're a bitch,” Daphy said. “Instead of calmly explaining what was going on you just jumped at my throat.”

“I almost fucking die,” Brownie said.

“It was a fucking dream,” Daphy answered.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

 

“So why are you a witch then,” Daphy asked. “If spells are so bad and shouldn't be used when you need them why are you even learning?”

“First where did you get the idea that I'm a witch,” Brownie asked.

“That's... you just.. look like one,” Daphy said.

“Really?” That wasn't a convincing answer, Brownie kept staring at Daphy but Daphy didn't say anything any more.

“Second, why do you think it's ok to ride a train without a ticket? Do you really think you are above everyone else and don't need to pay just cause you can?” Brownie asked.

She was sort of broke with all the food she had been eating. Dylan has sent a few bills but she wasn't going to make it all the way to Erhland without getting a job for a few days or go hungry but at least, her train ticket was paid for.

“I didn't choose to take this trip ok, and I wasn't given any money for it either,” Daphy said.

“So?” Brownie asked.

“So that's none of your concern, mind your own fucking business, cake.”

“It is my fucking business when I have to share my compartment with an homicidal magical maniac,” Brownie said.

Daphy stood up and stared Brownie down.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

Brownie couldn't see her face but at least her voice sounded sort of sorry, not that Brownie actually cared.

“My other problem is, that you used magic irresponsibly, on someone you know nothing about and it could have been fatal,” Brownie said. “I don't know who you are and I don't care, but don't you dare do magic on me again, I swear.”

“I'm sorry, I didn't know, it's a inoffensive spell,” Daphy said.

“It's not an inoffensive spell,” Brownie said this time sitting up over the edge, she was clearly done lying down. She just wished she could get out the door and never come back but since that was her cabin to begin with there was no way she was going to leave it for Daphy to cast that spell again while she was gone. She could already see it coming. She would leave, Daphy would caste the spell, and when Brownie would complain that there was someone in her cabin, the controller wouldn't see anything, he would tell her to stay in her own seat instead of trying to get a new one and she would be stuck here with Daphy anyway. “Spells are dangerous, all of them.”

“Seriously,” Daphy said rising an eyebrow and looking up at Brownie.

“Yes, seriously. Fruits are inoffensive until you get a strawberry allergy. Swimming pools are inoffensive until you freaking drawn in them. Every thing in this world is dangerous and actually, everything in this world is here to get you and might actually kill you. So yeah, spells are dangerous!” Brownie said angrily.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

The first time she had this dream she had thought that maybe she was having a heart attack, it was really that bad. She had no idea how Daphy's spell had been able to get her body to go through that pain without her waking up. It had to have been really potent and why did Daphy need to make her sleep to get the controller to believe she wasn't here? It wasn't like he wouldn't dare waking them up?

Brownie had way too many questions floating around in her mind, questions to which she wasn't going to get an answer for.

“What's your problem anyway? It's not like you seem to have anything better to do than take a nap,” Daphy said from bellow.

Brownie was going to ignore her but since that might give her the idea to start casting the spell again, she rose on one elbow and looked over the edge.

“My problem is, you almost killed me. My problem is, I have this dreams that end up with me dying in the most gruesome manners and I wake up before actually dying. This time, because of your idiotic spell, I didn't,” Brownie said.

“I... I didn't know,” Daphy answered.

Tuesday Travel 185: Witch Raising: The Book of Earth 32

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. This week we are following Brownie on her journey as she is going toward the second element: Earth.

 

About Witch Raising.

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches. 

 

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

She had left without saying good bye to anyone but Trisha. She had left home first without saying good bye and then she had left the last hotel while Josh was still in the shower. Not because she wanted to avoid him, she had pretended to sleep until he went to the bathroom and then she had grabbed her shoes and her bag silently and slipped out of the room on tip toes because, yeah, maybe she had been avoiding him, but she just didn't want him to go tell her he would come with her.

She wanted to be alone and Josh hadn't been helping much with that. At this point, it wasn't even to be able to think any more, it was because being near her surely wasn't safe for anyone. If the demons were to follow her to the train, there was nowhere to hide, unless Daphy's crazy spell actually worked on demons too, as far as it didn't kill her in the process.

Brownie couldn't get over that spell. She was feeling just fine and she had no problem reading before Daphy arrived and then she had felt so sleepy she had to come here and she didn't even remember falling asleep, all she remembered was that she was unable to wake up. She had never been able to go this far in that particular life though, this one was too painful for her mind to bear. She had no idea what happened after the boys left and her heart broke and it was a true broken heart, she could still somehow feel the pain in her chest.

Brownie had hoped that after what happened in Fireden, she was going to get some rest, at least in the train, but apparently, the universe had decided otherwise.

Daphy was staring at her now, as if she was trying to put her energy on her. Gideon didn't really do stuff like that, his magic looked instantaneous. Brownie had trouble deciding what Daphy was. Maybe an hybrid of some sort, maybe she could do both the crazy stuff that would allow her to take the train without paying for a ticket, convenient but not really ethical, and the other stuff: the magic Brownie had had to work so much for.

Brownie went back down on her pillow. There was something strange about this girl, it was as if she already knew Brownie while Brownie had no idea who she was. 

This trip was starting to get on her nerve, at least the people in it. Was it too much to ask to be left on her own for a while? It wasn't that she didn't like people, sort of the opposite, she loved to have people around, she loved the noise and the craze and observing people doing their things, she could have done that all day long. It was a bit related to fashion, there was a way to make sure that people's personality shone through with clothes and Brownie used to be good at that. Maybe when she stopped using that, her tolerance for people stopped to.

Brownie looked at her from above and rised an eyebrow. She had to be a magical one, just like Gideon, she had inner magic that she could use for daily manual task and there was nothing Brownie could do to stop that. Somehow, they had it easy. What ever they wanted they could go the magical way to get it, whether it was closing the curtains in the bedroom without getting up, cutting vegetables for diner without touching a knife, creating light in a dark room. She had seen Gideon spending his entire day using magic without any consequences and that drove her crazy, because everything she did required a high level of concentration and if she wasn't in the right state of mind, there was no way to tell if the spell was going to work. She needed the right ingredients, the right time of the month, damn sometimes even the right hour of the day. There was no way for her to do anything without actually doing it manually, she couldn't use her powers for triviality and no matter what she did, if the universe thought it was wrong, she was going to be punished for it. 

 

That was so unfair and now this girl here, almost killed her and she was the bitch!

 

“You haven't seen bitch yet,” Brownie said. “And trust me, you don't want to see it.” 

 

“Like you could possibly take me on, cake,” Daphy said. “You better not try anything.” 

 

Brownie took a piece of cray out of her bag, draw a line on the side of her couch from head to toes and drew a small pentagram on it near the ladder with the point going out. That was at least going to keep Daphy's magic out, whatever it was. There was no way she was letting her guard down in front of that girl. She didn't even know how Daphy had thought it was ok to talk about magic to her without knowing her. Did she also have super powers that made her recognize witches when she saw them?

“I think you'll have to pay for your ticket like everyone else,” Brownie said. “And don't include me in any more of your spell, thank you.”

“Seriously, you're going to be a pain about it,” Daphy said.

Brownie felt shaky and Daphy was sure lucky she felt that way. Brownie looked down at her.

“If you ever do any magic including me without my expressed consent, I'll threw you and your suitcase through the window,” Brownie said. “You've been warned.”

“So what do you suppose the controller is going to do when he comes here,” Daphy said.

“Hopefully, lock you in a cell or kick you out of the train.”

“Wow, you're such a bitch, cake,” Daphy said.
