WeWriWar 207: Rainbow catcher

Welcome to a new excerpt of Rainbow Catcher for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday.

Now let's go back to our story.

Summary of previous episodes: Clarissa is coughing and wanted to watch Everett Cooper on TV but Jason refused, she is due to get her rainbow the next day but she seems scared, to make her feel better Jason leave the TV on. Clarissa tried to explain about rainbows, she is a big fan of Everett Cooper but Jason is not too sure about it. Clarissa complained about her dialophone but Jason needs to go to work. Before completely leaving he is thinking about getting her her rainbow. We flashed back to the meeting Jason had with a rainbow seller at the black market. Jason left Clarissa's room to go to work. Jason was talking to his boss about the rainbow coming the next day. Jason prepared the money for the rainbow in a sport bag and went to the hospital. The rainbow seller arrived for the delivery. But it was a scam and Jason prepares to go get the rainbow himself in the desert. Markus has a last surprise for him.

We start just where we left off last week.

Clarissa had asked him what he really wanted to do and maybe being a doctor was not the real answer. He had just been copying the people around him without really thinking about it. Doctor Marshall was a good person so being a doctor would also probably make him a good person. But the answer wasn’t so obvious anymore. Jason took the key from Markus hand and stood up. He was going to hunt that rainbow down and the first step was to know if he wanted to ride this bike or not. He just had to progress toward the goal, one step at a time and he would probably find the answer and the rainbow, just one step at a time the same way Markus and millions of people had been doing it before him.
“Good decision kid,” Markus said getting up too.

Jason was not used to that kind of speech coming from Markus. Generally, Markus's speech was limited to “this cannot be trusted” or “you shouldn’t do that”.
He looked at the man sitting next to him with new eyes. Markus had a life before, something totally different from what he had expected.
Jason had been looking at people as if they were fixed, as if they had always been what they were and would always be, he suddenly realized that the Markus riding that bike was a totally different person than the Markus he knew in the garage.
Would he have liked the Markus from before? The one doing drugs or obsessed with riding? Jason wondered a bit about himself and how far away from his real self he actually was.

We start just where we left off last week with what Markus had to say.

So I chose the bike, however, my addictive temperament got me addicted to the wind, I wanted this sensation of freedom over and over again so I rode forever without eating or drinking and ended up in the desert. I was half dead when Gena found me. She took care of me like no one else did before her. And she needed me too, to leave the desert she needed me to find her. Clarissa needs you to find the rainbow for her or at least that’s the direction your life seems to want to take. I’m giving you this bike so that you can find yourself riding it like I found myself. I still like the freedom but I love life better. You’ll take the right decision. But first get up, and get us to Green Sun Valley high speed then you’ll decide if it’s the bike or the bus”

“I like it, just if I die riding, there will be nobody left to take care of Clarissa,” Jason said.
Markus sat beside him.
“You are a lot stronger than I was at your age kid. I would never have been able to take care of someone sick like you do. But you need to remember one thing: You only have one life and you need to do what is good for you too. It can get difficult at time but it’s always for a reason. I was given this bike at a time when I lost myself in drugs. It was either a nice bike or the drugs. I chose the drugs at first but after my first ride, everything got somehow clearer."

To know what else Markus has to say, don't forget to come back next Sunday.

“How can you even see where you’re going?” Jason asked.
“Actually when you're driving the sensations are totally different, I remember my first ride with the moon catcher and I also was insecure about riding on my own but the thing is, well you’ll see soon enough, you’re taking us to Green Sun Valley,” Markus said handing him the key.
Jason didn’t take it and sat on the floor. How could Markus even expect him to do something like that? How could Markus even want to give him that bike?
“I thought you’ll like the freedom, I did, after the first ride. I became totally addicted to it, that’s how I ended up in the desert, that almost killed me,” Markus said.
Jason looked up at him.

Markus stopped on the side of the road.
“I bet you never reached the border of the city that fast,” he said.
Jason climbed down the bike and almost fell taking a few steps on cotton-like legs. Markus laughed again.
“Pretty impressive, hein, the moon catcher. It can take you so far in thoughts that you need not to lose yourself,” Markus said.
“I’ll never be able to drive this bike, and even if I do, I’ll never use the moon catcher,” Jason said still not secure on his feet.
“Hahaha, I see your confidence didn’t rise with the speed,” Markus said.

He knew that if they crashed, at this speed they would sure die, but there was nothing he could do about it, he didn’t have to fight anymore and the world suddenly felt peaceful.
“Don’t sleep kid,” Markus’s voice seemed coming from very far away.
Jason opened his eyes, Markus was yelling in the wind and laughing, probably at his reaction.
“Are you ok?” Markus asked.
Jason didn’t answer, he would never get used to that bike but he understood why Markus loved it so much. It was the sensation of freedom, nothing could ever match that.
Markus turned off the moon catcher and the bike’s velocity decrease slowly. When they reached less than 60 tours per minute, the protections went back hiding to their original position.

He took a deep breath, he could let go of the handle and actually let go of everything. His feet and lower legs were imprisoned by metallic shoes, which had come from nowhere to secure him. Another metallic part had grown between him and the handle protecting his back. He felt both sleepy and powerful. The speed and the wind tickled his eyes. The previously noisy motorbike was now totally quiet. The sensation was extreme. He felt like a part of the universe around him as if the knowledge of all things was closer than expected.

Push back your feet a little bit,” Markus said turning his face to look down at Jason’s feet. Jason pushed his feet as far as he could on the motorbike's ground.
“Are you ready?” Markus asked.
Jason didn’t know what he was supposed to be ready for, but he nodded. Markus pressed a button with his right thumb and Jason felt crushed back by the acceleration. He was clinging at the handle in his back not to fall off. He couldn’t look at the landscape anymore; the bike was eating the road, it was too fast for his eyes. He wondered how the bike which had seemed so old and fragile the night before could ever withstand such a speed before realizing that it did not look like the same bike anymore.

It was probably why the people here wanted to live up, to get reconnected to what normal ground felt like. Jason found the paradox laughable. This place was the cold step before the desert and he tried to appreciate the coldness as much as he could without letting the absence of sky pierce his heart. This place was oppressing.
“You need to wait until you reach a speed of at least 60 tours per minute to use the moon catcher,” Markus said.
“What?” Jason answered, the noise of the engine and the wind in his ears made it difficult to hear Markus’s voice.
“Look,” Markus said pointing at the quadrant in front of him “60.”
“I got it,” Jason answered.

Rich people lived there, any of them could probably buy a rainbow for Clarissa easily but they didn’t care. They could have offered him a job but they refused many times. Even for cleaning the floor or the windows he wasn’t good enough for them. For him it was a limited world where everything looked the same and without any space for creation. He didn’t know what was hiding inside the buildings and didn’t want to know. That was a mystery so attractive to the people in the small wooden houses but it was repulsive to him. He looked up at the sky but didn’t find it. The buildings were so high that the light and the warm of the two suns couldn’t reach the ground.

The buildings were not made of wood and stones anymore they were huge building made of glass and touching the sky. It was the reason why the city had been called Sky City. Nowhere in Polysky there were building going so high. As Markus drove between the cars in the huge avenues between the Sky buildings, Jason felt the coldness of the glass. It was a blue city, cold ice blue building all around. People were said to be happier here, people back in their small house were dreaming about living up somewhere up near the clouds. The closer to the sky the happier you felt. But Jason was in total disagreement.

Sky City was not a huge city but it was a colorful one. This part of the town was composed of residential quarters, mostly for manual workers like him and Markus. The houses only had one floor and the walls and roofs were painted in different colors giving them an artistic aspect. Some houses had drawings, you could tell that the owners were working in some artistic area, the beautiful painting were most likely to attract clients to their shops or ateliers.

Jason enjoyed living here. The neighborhood wasn’t safe but it was nice to be able to recognize everything around easily, to know where to go and where not to go, what to do and what not to do. Here he somewhat felt safe. The rest of the city was another story.

But he hadn’t ride for many years and everything about this particular bike was making him uncomfortable, like the rusty handle he was clinging at or the place where he put his feet that creaked like they were going to fall of, like most of the other pieces that were probably unscrewed, everything except the moon catcher. Knowing that something that shiny was hiding inside the bike was some how reassuring. It was like if the bike had a soul in a way. This time it didn’t smoke but it still made really strange noises and that creeped Jason even more. Markus gave him a helmet and passed his on.

“You’re ready kid,” Markus said looking at him.
He didn’t have time to answer, Markus already pressed the accelerator and they moved through the streets. It wasn’t all that scary. Jason looked at the houses passing before them, forgetting to observe how Markus drove.

“I’m not sure about that,” Jason said.

“You’ll see, she is very special,” Markus added encouragingly.

Jason could have bet on it.

He sighed and climbed behind Markus as Markus started the engine. He didn’t know what he could observe from behind, he tried to fit his feet properly and to keep his hands behind his back without falling. It was an awkward position. He remembered being on his father’s bike when he was little, sitting in the front clinking to his dad’s legs. That was comfortable, he enjoyed riding.

His boss was acting totally out of character.
“Let’s go, first, I’ll drive us out of town, and then you’ll take care of the rest. You just have to observe what I’m doing. Gena will pick me up in Green Sun Valley, at least if she is not mad at me anymore,” Markus said laughing.
Jason suspected Markus just wanted an excuse to ride his beloved motorbike again without having Gena thinking that he was doing it for himself.
Markus pushed the motorbike out of the garage and let down the door behind them. He sat at the front.
“Come on kid,” He said.

“Yes,” he answered as if it wasn’t already obvious.
“Let me get dressed up and we’ll see how you ride,” Markus said.
“About that…” Jason started but Markus was already too far to listen to his argument.

Markus opened the garage secret door manually leading in the back street, turning the handle. Jason turned around the bike trying to figure out how to start it, where to put his feet, how to accelerate and most of all how to brake and stop when Markus would realize this wasn't a good idea.
Markus offered him a bright smile.
“She is a sweet heart, isn’t she?” he said.
Jason didn't understand how Markus could be so sentimental over the bike as if it was a person.
