We introduced Sorina, three weeks after the beginning of Viorel's escape.
Viorel dreamed of Sorina and woke up not really remembering anything. Traveling to Paris, he arrives at "La cour des miracles". He is rescued by a stranger who turned out to be Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist he was looking for. Nicolas does some strange experiment without Viorel's agreement. Some people are looking for Nicolas's secrets. On the other side of Europe, Sorina awakes and Viorel's past in haunting him. Viorel discovered that he can change into a wolf but that's not the easiest thing to handle. After finding out that a younger version of Nicolas might not be acting with his best interest at heart, Viorel decides to leave for the north. He is now traveling with two people, Alexej who needed to get out of Praha and Irina who he accidentally rescued.
Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last time.
“The poor child must be so afraid of the dragons, she is sleeping again and pale,” the inn keeper’s wife said entering the dining room, carrying the empty bowl of soup she had brought to Irina. She seemed worried.
“She has a very weak composition,” I said. “I shouldn’t have taken her to town yesterday, after the event of the day before it was too much for her.”
“She can rest as long as she want but you have come here at a dreaded time, I’m not sure there is a doctor left in town. The dragons turned the city into hell and the richer left, without even burying the dead. My husband forced me to take the children away, business was so slow already before you came. Nobody wants to stay in a city plagued with death,” she said. “Why are you staying here?”
“It is just a step in our journey to the North, I’m bringing the girl back to her grand-mother after the death of her parents. She is still shocked by the loss and had never been the same since. She might even deny it when the fever takes her. I promised them to take care of her. I needed her to rest but her state seems to be getting worse,” I lied. “We will take the road again as soon as she feels better.”
I found it easy to lie when I felt the blood running in me. The inn keeper’s wife believed every single word I said. I wonder if I was pushing the thoughts inside of her without even willing to. She was quick to answer so.
“It is so touching to see a young man filled with such solicitude and holding onto the promises he made, it’s getting rare these days,” she said smiling at me as if I was a saint.
I smiled back. If only she knew what I had done last night, she might feel completely differently or maybe she wouldn’t even believe it. I was playing my role perfectly.
