WeWriWar 194: Rainbow catcher

Welcome to a new excerpt of Rainbow Catcher for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday.

Now let's go back to our story.

Summary of previous episodes: Clarissa is coughing and wanted to watch Everett Cooper on TV but Jason refused, she is due to get her rainbow the next day but she seems scared, to make her feel better Jason leave the TV on. Clarissa tried to explain about rainbows, she is a big fan of Everett Cooper but Jason is not too sure about it. Clarissa complained about her dialophone but Jason needs to go to work. Before completely leaving he is thinking about getting her her rainbow. We flashed back to the meeting Jason had with a rainbow seller at the black market. Jason left Clarissa's room to go to work. Jason was talking to his boss about the rainbow coming the next day. Jason prepared the money for the rainbow in a sport bag and went to the hospital. The rainbow seller arrived for the delivery. But it was a scam and Jason prepares to go get the rainbow himself in the desert. Markus has a last surprise for him.

We start just where we left off last week.

But he hadn’t ride for many years and everything about this particular bike was making him uncomfortable, like the rusty handle he was clinging at or the place where he put his feet that creaked like they were going to fall of, like most of the other pieces that were probably unscrewed, everything except the moon catcher. Knowing that something that shiny was hiding inside the bike was some how reassuring. It was like if the bike had a soul in a way. This time it didn’t smoke but it still made really strange noises and that creeped Jason even more. Markus gave him a helmet and passed his on.

“You’re ready kid,” Markus said looking at him.
He didn’t have time to answer, Markus already pressed the accelerator and they moved through the streets. It wasn’t all that scary. Jason looked at the houses passing before them, forgetting to observe how Markus drove.

  1. Oy! That last line might be ominous. Makes me wonder what's going t happen next. :-)

  2. He's finally on his way. It probably won't be a smooth trip, I'd guess.

  3. I'm thinking the ride isn't going to go all that smoothly.

  4. I've been on that kind of ride before! Nice descriptions, Linda.

  5. I haven't had many chances to ride a motorbike, but I loved the few I did. Great snippet.

  6. This snippet reminds me of the time I went on a scooter ride through San Francisco going like 60 mph. I was a passenger, but the scooter was not built for 2 people. So, i could totally identify with this snippet. Great writing!

  7. If he used to ride, wouldn't he say "footpegs" instead of "the place where he put his feet"? I think even the uninitiated would understand the term from context.
Nice depiction of anxiety. What's the shiny thing hiding inside the bike like a soul? Is it the rainbow?

  8. I doubt it will be a smooth trip. Nicely shown anxiety.

  9. Well, at least he's relaxing about the bike. Now if he just remembers to pay attention.
