Mystery Monday 49: Harajuku Kiss

Welcome Mystery Monday. For this weekly writing blog post, I will be presenting snippets of my novel Harajuku Kiss, a mystery romance in Japan.
I hope you'll enjoy following our heroine through her thoughts and adventures.

About Harajuku Kiss

At times, life can be so depressing. She is walking her usual recovery tour in Harajuku, finishing with a crepe, trying to forget that her boyfriend dumped her once again for the week-end... When the unthinkable happens... A boy stops in front of her in the street and kisses her, in the middle of the street, before running away.
Trying to discover more about him, she is dragged into a dangerous game of mystery. A biologist has been murdered and a deadly virus is on the loose. First suspect: the mysterious Harajuku's stranger.

Here is the snippet for this week

I left the memory stick on the desk and put my empty yogurt in the bin. I needed sleep anyway. I always needed sleep, especially because I didn’t get much because of work and worry. But sleep wasn’t something easy for me. I used to be able to count myself down to sleep but I didn’t manage for a long time, actually since he started playing with my heart. Having a heart was pretty awesome, having a broken one was pretty painful. I lied down fixing the ceiling. The light of the cars passing in the street nearby was drawing light shapes on it. There was really nothing I could do right now and I knew it but I still couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened. I remember that time so long ago when I wishes for something, anything to happen in my so boring life.

WeWriWar 319: The House at the Crossing 25

Hello everybody and welcome for a new Sunday of writing with Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday!

I'm sorry for my absence the past few weeks. I had a bit of a hard time.

Let's continue with  "The House at the Crossing" and it's a prequel to Demon Soul and the demon series. It's a bit of a mix of Fantasy and Science-fiction.
It follows one of the books more obscure character as she first come into the House. It's suppose to explain why there are so many people is the house and sort of where they come from and at the same time be a first time adventure for the main character as she needs to adapt to her new role and the new version of who she is.

I finally finished the first draft of "The House at the Crossing". I even managed to make it like it doesn't really need a sequel which totally works for my work load. Anyway.

Let's start right at where we left off !

“What does that mean?”
“I was born here, in this house.”
Teresa sets the boiler on the table and sits next to me, she is so skinny that I feel any rushed movement might break her but she just crosses her fingers in front of her on the table.
“Then one day, I had to go out, we always have to go out somehow,” she smiled.
Everything seem so obvious to me but the others have settled and all versions of me are listening.
“When I left this house, nothing I did was absolute anymore. My choices were partial. Do I get the blue dress or the red dress? If I was to get the red dress, there was a part of me that would still get the blue one and then came the fragmentation. Each of my new self created, duplicated would go their own way, sometimes very close, sometimes, very far. Every choices I made created new versions of me.”

Vampire Friday: Vampire Heart 264

Welcome to a new part of Vampire Heart unedited. Have you been bitten yet? Sign up to be part of our awesome Vampire Friday blog hop team! You know you want to!

Summary of the previous episodes: Viorel has been tortured by his supposed family who wanted to have him burn in the sun. Strangely enough the sun didn't burn him as expected but Viorel has no memory of who he is. Following the advises of his supposed father, he left Sighișoara and is now traveling to the West. After some skirmish in a previous city, he found refuge on a boat. Viorel is now in Vienna. The little problem is that the guy at the inn was a bit of an asshole and helped capture Viorel thinking he was a vampire, which he is but nobody needs to know. Now there is a huge man (which I call the colossi) taking care of Viorel and a priest. They brought a girl. Torture my holy water... Fail. Viorel managed to confuse everyone, now he would like to get out of here. But the girl seems pretty useless. They still managed to escape and he left the girl to the care of the boat lady before going back to have two words with his captors but his power of persuasion were failing him. The priest wanted to crack a deal but Viorel is not really up to help his enemies. He finally got some blood but he can't risk to stay in Vienna. He travel to Linz were he stays a bit to learn German.
Viorel wanted to go to Praha but redirect himself toward Augsburg instead where he wants to get a horse, except that the horses are a bit scared of his vampirism and maybe something else. Viorel is really not a horse expert. Then he comes into an altercation with couple of people, he wants some fear in his blood. The girl Viorel has found seemed to enjoy the game. Viorel prepares for the nightmares that come with a feast of blood, in a rush to leave, he cross the dukedom of Lorrain.
We introduced Sorina, three weeks after the beginning of Viorel's escape.
Viorel dreamed of Sorina and woke up not really remembering anything. Traveling to Paris, he arrives at "La cour des miracles". He is rescued by a stranger who turned out to be Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist he was looking for. Nicolas does some strange experiment without Viorel's agreement. Some people are looking for Nicolas's secrets. On the other side of Europe, Sorina awakes and Viorel's past in haunting him. Viorel discovered that he can change into a wolf but that's not the easiest thing to handle. After finding out that a younger version of Nicolas might not be acting with his best interest at heart, Viorel decides to leave for the north. He is now traveling with two people, Alexej who needed to get out of Praha and Irina who he accidentally rescued.

Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last time

He walked in the middle of the place his eyes straight on the doll, he had a smirk on his face that didn’t presage anything good. This doll was like an affront to him. It was something that he should never had seen and I could see the corner of his mouth twinkle as it always did when he was angry.
“So I came here today to honor one of your girls into my house,” he said with a smile, his arms welcomingly spread turning around to face the crowd. His smile was the most scary part of all, he only smiled when something terrible was about to happen and I knew for sure that there was nothing the villagers dreaded most than to have one of their girls taken away from them to disappear in the castle as a vampire with an unknown fate, to them death was worthier. A wave of unexpressed anger rose in the crowed. I didn’t want to be part of it, I didn’t want them to hate me but I didn’t have a choice, they hated me already because of who I was, because of what I was and I had learned to live with it when I didn’t need to face it so obviously. The girls held each other. And the bravest of the men took few steps forward as to dissuade my uncle and protect them but it was vain, we all knew that their neck would be broken before they had a chance to make a move.

My uncle walked closer to the girls, inspecting them as if he was picking up fruit at the market. The first time he passed through he didn’t touch anyone, just looked. The second time he smelled them and pulled two of them out of the crowd by their arm, the girls stumbled behind him and hugged each other even more. I knew he wasn’t after them, they were just here of decoration, for the show. He stopped in front of the prettiest girl, the one who was supposed to get married to the son of the village’s chief. It was his way to tame the humans, taking what was special to them, feeding their hatred for him and us. He always said that if you could feel your enemies’ hatred, it was easier to defeat them.

Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last week

I felt myself trembling but it wasn’t the shiver given by the memory, it was the effect of the philosopher stone on my body. The vision blurred and the cold wave propagated back. I felt the nausea deep in my stomach. I opened my eyes but the room seemed to be spinning furiously around me. The effect of the philosopher stone was making me sick again. It wasn’t like getting foggy memories back from drinking blood, those were clear and precise and I could remember every details, the taste in my mouth, the smell of the wooden floor and dust of the room where I trained. It was like becoming myself again, reliving a lost part of my life. My heart was knocking hard on my chest and I find it reassuring. I wanted to vomit but I knew that there was nothing left in my stomach. I huddled up on the bed trying to breath slowly, trying to stopped the nausea, the cold wave of the philosopher stone was searching in my head for my lost memories. I didn’t want to stop it this time, I had a lot more to go through. I tried to guide it, I wanted to know more about the human changed into vampire about what might have happened to Sorina.

We were in the center of the village, in was the midsummer festival, the villagers had prepared a fire and they were going to burn a large doll representing the demons in the middle of the place. The place was filled with animation, sheep and chickens were roasting and the smell of the burning grease filled the atmosphere. There was a choral singing church songs near the church and the girls were all dressed with the same white dresses. When they saw us approach, the villagers stopped their activity and the tension was palpable. We never went out during the Christian festival, my father had told me it was a rule to let the human celebrate peacefully what they believed in and I could feel their surprise. The doll in the center of the place, the one supposed to be burned resembled closely to one of us. I didn’t like it but I knew I had to be here. My uncle had decided that he was going to chose one more woman to transform and be his personal slave, we had at least ten of them, he was so brutal with them they one had died recently. They were lower than the humans in his eyes because they were not human anymore, they were vampires but he could still smell the impurity of their blood on them and it was enough to make him angry.
