Northern Ireland: Belfast, Botanic Gardens and Queen's University (with video)

The Botanic Gardens are located on Stranmillis Road in Queen's Quarter adjacent to Queen's University. They opened as private Royal Gardens in 1828 and stay private until 1895 when they became a public park.

They have a beautiful palm house with two wings, one cool, one tropical. The Palm House has a dome with a higher ceiling to feature taller species. It also has a 400-year-old Xanthorrhoea.

At one of the entrances you can find a statue of Lord Kelvin, a physicist born in Belfast.

The Botanic Gardens hosts concerts and outdoor screenings of ballets and operas from the Royal Opera House.

Queen's University was founded in 1810. It is the root of Belfast's academic life. The part you'll see on the pictures is called the Lanyon Building. It's the main entrance leading to an inner court yard.

Northern Ireland: Belfast, The Giant's Ring (with video)

The Giant's Ring is a henge monument from the Neolithic period in Belfast. It is near the Shaw's Bridge crossing of the River Lagan.

It was built around 2700BC. It consists of a circular enclosure with a small passage tomb at the center. The original purpose was most likely a meeting place or a memorial to the dead, probably part of a European Neolithic religion which seem to be death oriented.

In the 18th century the site was used for horse racing.

Normandie: Giverny, Monet's house (with video)

We took the train back to Normandie to visit Giverny and especially Claude Monet's house and the garden where he painted the water lilies paintings we saw in a previous article. You can take a tourist train to go to Monet's house from the train station. I wanted to visit the house since I read Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi, it didn't disappoint. The book is about three women, it's really good.
