Northern Ireland: Belfast, Botanic Gardens and Queen's University (with video)

The Botanic Gardens are located on Stranmillis Road in Queen's Quarter adjacent to Queen's University. They opened as private Royal Gardens in 1828 and stay private until 1895 when they became a public park.

They have a beautiful palm house with two wings, one cool, one tropical. The Palm House has a dome with a higher ceiling to feature taller species. It also has a 400-year-old Xanthorrhoea.

At one of the entrances you can find a statue of Lord Kelvin, a physicist born in Belfast.

The Botanic Gardens hosts concerts and outdoor screenings of ballets and operas from the Royal Opera House.

Queen's University was founded in 1810. It is the root of Belfast's academic life. The part you'll see on the pictures is called the Lanyon Building. It's the main entrance leading to an inner court yard.
