Tuesday Travel 188: Witch Raising: The Book of Earth 35

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. This week we are following Brownie on her journey as she is going toward the second element: Earth.

 

About Witch Raising.

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches. 

 

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

 

“So why are you a witch then,” Daphy asked. “If spells are so bad and shouldn't be used when you need them why are you even learning?”

“First where did you get the idea that I'm a witch,” Brownie asked.

“That's... you just.. look like one,” Daphy said.

“Really?” That wasn't a convincing answer, Brownie kept staring at Daphy but Daphy didn't say anything any more.

“Second, why do you think it's ok to ride a train without a ticket? Do you really think you are above everyone else and don't need to pay just cause you can?” Brownie asked.

She was sort of broke with all the food she had been eating. Dylan has sent a few bills but she wasn't going to make it all the way to Erhland without getting a job for a few days or go hungry but at least, her train ticket was paid for.

“I didn't choose to take this trip ok, and I wasn't given any money for it either,” Daphy said.

“So?” Brownie asked.

“So that's none of your concern, mind your own fucking business, cake.”

“It is my fucking business when I have to share my compartment with an homicidal magical maniac,” Brownie said.

Daphy stood up and stared Brownie down.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

Brownie couldn't see her face but at least her voice sounded sort of sorry, not that Brownie actually cared.

“My other problem is, that you used magic irresponsibly, on someone you know nothing about and it could have been fatal,” Brownie said. “I don't know who you are and I don't care, but don't you dare do magic on me again, I swear.”

“I'm sorry, I didn't know, it's a inoffensive spell,” Daphy said.

“It's not an inoffensive spell,” Brownie said this time sitting up over the edge, she was clearly done lying down. She just wished she could get out the door and never come back but since that was her cabin to begin with there was no way she was going to leave it for Daphy to cast that spell again while she was gone. She could already see it coming. She would leave, Daphy would caste the spell, and when Brownie would complain that there was someone in her cabin, the controller wouldn't see anything, he would tell her to stay in her own seat instead of trying to get a new one and she would be stuck here with Daphy anyway. “Spells are dangerous, all of them.”

“Seriously,” Daphy said rising an eyebrow and looking up at Brownie.

“Yes, seriously. Fruits are inoffensive until you get a strawberry allergy. Swimming pools are inoffensive until you freaking drawn in them. Every thing in this world is dangerous and actually, everything in this world is here to get you and might actually kill you. So yeah, spells are dangerous!” Brownie said angrily.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

The first time she had this dream she had thought that maybe she was having a heart attack, it was really that bad. She had no idea how Daphy's spell had been able to get her body to go through that pain without her waking up. It had to have been really potent and why did Daphy need to make her sleep to get the controller to believe she wasn't here? It wasn't like he wouldn't dare waking them up?

Brownie had way too many questions floating around in her mind, questions to which she wasn't going to get an answer for.

“What's your problem anyway? It's not like you seem to have anything better to do than take a nap,” Daphy said from bellow.

Brownie was going to ignore her but since that might give her the idea to start casting the spell again, she rose on one elbow and looked over the edge.

“My problem is, you almost killed me. My problem is, I have this dreams that end up with me dying in the most gruesome manners and I wake up before actually dying. This time, because of your idiotic spell, I didn't,” Brownie said.

“I... I didn't know,” Daphy answered.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

She had left without saying good bye to anyone but Trisha. She had left home first without saying good bye and then she had left the last hotel while Josh was still in the shower. Not because she wanted to avoid him, she had pretended to sleep until he went to the bathroom and then she had grabbed her shoes and her bag silently and slipped out of the room on tip toes because, yeah, maybe she had been avoiding him, but she just didn't want him to go tell her he would come with her.

She wanted to be alone and Josh hadn't been helping much with that. At this point, it wasn't even to be able to think any more, it was because being near her surely wasn't safe for anyone. If the demons were to follow her to the train, there was nowhere to hide, unless Daphy's crazy spell actually worked on demons too, as far as it didn't kill her in the process.

Brownie couldn't get over that spell. She was feeling just fine and she had no problem reading before Daphy arrived and then she had felt so sleepy she had to come here and she didn't even remember falling asleep, all she remembered was that she was unable to wake up. She had never been able to go this far in that particular life though, this one was too painful for her mind to bear. She had no idea what happened after the boys left and her heart broke and it was a true broken heart, she could still somehow feel the pain in her chest.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

Brownie had hoped that after what happened in Fireden, she was going to get some rest, at least in the train, but apparently, the universe had decided otherwise.

Daphy was staring at her now, as if she was trying to put her energy on her. Gideon didn't really do stuff like that, his magic looked instantaneous. Brownie had trouble deciding what Daphy was. Maybe an hybrid of some sort, maybe she could do both the crazy stuff that would allow her to take the train without paying for a ticket, convenient but not really ethical, and the other stuff: the magic Brownie had had to work so much for.

Brownie went back down on her pillow. There was something strange about this girl, it was as if she already knew Brownie while Brownie had no idea who she was. 

This trip was starting to get on her nerve, at least the people in it. Was it too much to ask to be left on her own for a while? It wasn't that she didn't like people, sort of the opposite, she loved to have people around, she loved the noise and the craze and observing people doing their things, she could have done that all day long. It was a bit related to fashion, there was a way to make sure that people's personality shone through with clothes and Brownie used to be good at that. Maybe when she stopped using that, her tolerance for people stopped to.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last time.

Brownie looked at her from above and rised an eyebrow. She had to be a magical one, just like Gideon, she had inner magic that she could use for daily manual task and there was nothing Brownie could do to stop that. Somehow, they had it easy. What ever they wanted they could go the magical way to get it, whether it was closing the curtains in the bedroom without getting up, cutting vegetables for diner without touching a knife, creating light in a dark room. She had seen Gideon spending his entire day using magic without any consequences and that drove her crazy, because everything she did required a high level of concentration and if she wasn't in the right state of mind, there was no way to tell if the spell was going to work. She needed the right ingredients, the right time of the month, damn sometimes even the right hour of the day. There was no way for her to do anything without actually doing it manually, she couldn't use her powers for triviality and no matter what she did, if the universe thought it was wrong, she was going to be punished for it. 

 

That was so unfair and now this girl here, almost killed her and she was the bitch!

 

“You haven't seen bitch yet,” Brownie said. “And trust me, you don't want to see it.” 

 

“Like you could possibly take me on, cake,” Daphy said. “You better not try anything.” 

 

Brownie took a piece of cray out of her bag, draw a line on the side of her couch from head to toes and drew a small pentagram on it near the ladder with the point going out. That was at least going to keep Daphy's magic out, whatever it was. There was no way she was letting her guard down in front of that girl. She didn't even know how Daphy had thought it was ok to talk about magic to her without knowing her. Did she also have super powers that made her recognize witches when she saw them?

“I think you'll have to pay for your ticket like everyone else,” Brownie said. “And don't include me in any more of your spell, thank you.”

“Seriously, you're going to be a pain about it,” Daphy said.

Brownie felt shaky and Daphy was sure lucky she felt that way. Brownie looked down at her.

“If you ever do any magic including me without my expressed consent, I'll threw you and your suitcase through the window,” Brownie said. “You've been warned.”

“So what do you suppose the controller is going to do when he comes here,” Daphy said.

“Hopefully, lock you in a cell or kick you out of the train.”

“Wow, you're such a bitch, cake,” Daphy said.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last week.

 

Brownie yell but she strangled herself on the word. Her eyes were painful as if they had been filled with dust and she couldn't see straight. She still felt the pain in her chest from the broken heart and from not being able to breath and the air smelled like blood, her own thick and red blood. She felt the hotness of it on her skin, the stickiness.

“I'm making sure the controller think we are not here, I casted a invisible sleep spell, didn't you notice.”

Daphy's words only partially register. Magic bad. Was the only thing Brownie really comprehended right now. She took a few more deep breathes and stroke her eyes multiple time.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last week.

This was the moment when Brownie in the train's wagon was supposed to wake up. She wasn't supposed to sleep through her death, she had never before. But she started suffocating. There was no way to wake up. She was so tired she fought in her dream as her breath left her. She felt like she was going to die with her past self, she couldn't breath and she couldn't wake up.

“Seriously, can't you sleep calmly,” said a voice bellow her.

Brownie opened her eyes with a startle. She finally caught a breath.

“How am I supposed to make the controler believe this cabine is empty if you keep on kicking and screaming against my spell.”

“What!”

“Nooo,” the demon roared but it was too late, Brownie's past self was getting away from him, escaping him finally and he would have no use for all the spoiled blood. Even without magic, she could still sense what was right. He crowled toward her but there was not enough blood left in her. He stood back up. Brownie's past self was looking at him as her eyes started to veil. She didn't want him to be the last thing she saw but she didn't have any choice, she couldn't move but she tried to smiled. The demon opened the earth beneath her and she fell hard on her back. He was way above, she tried to yell in a sudden panic realizing this time that she was going to die. He closed the hole on top of her, burying her alive.

However, the little display of magic of Brownie's other self didn't last long and wasn't enough to protect her from the demon. He fell on the bed and stood up quickly. He grabbed her by an arm and pulled her up. Her body was limp in front of him but she looked straight at his face, she was terrified.

“I said, your blood will be mine witch and I intent to get what I came for.”

He bite her neck. Brownie didn't know if it was a sudden act of bravery or a reaction to pain but her past self gathered herself up and pushed the demon as much as he could. He detached himself from her taking a huge piece of her neck in the process and let her fall on the floor her blood floating the black wood of the bedroom.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last week.

The man spun her around and stroke her cheek, scratching it with his finger nail, drawing blood, wings had grown out in his back breaking his shirt that hung open stuck in the belt of his trousers.

“Tonight, after many life, your blood is finally mine witch,” the demon said.

Brownie wanted to yell to her past self to run away but there was no use both their voice were gone. A tear rolled on her past self cheek as the demon threw her on the bed. The tear mixed to the blood and the moment he jumped on her, a force pushed away from her and he remained stuck in the air above the bed. Brownie's past self stayed stunned for a moment, a lot longer than Brownie did but finally rolled away from the bed just to cower in a corner of the room pulling herself into a ball as far away into the wall as she could as if she was going to disappear.

Brownie swallowed hard. She had never done that before, she had never been alone in a bedroom with a man, not even her father, she was scared, she didn't know what to do. She didn't want to do anything, if she did something wrong, that would be worse. But Brownie coudln't imagine how things could get worse. She was trying to detach from her past self but she couldn't. She was dragged in a train of thought that this was the best she could get that if she behaved as he wanted her too, everything will be all right.

He pulled on the lace of her wedding gone and ripped the fabric apart with a crack. Brownie was left in her undergarment a white and thin piece of fabric covering her only. Once again she wanted to run but she was unable to move.

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last week.

 

He was a good man, that's what she was trying to repeat to herself in her head. Everybody loved him. He was supposed to be the best catch in the village and he wanted her. She was the lucky one but she didn't fell lucky.

When she entered her nuptial bedroom or more accurately was pushed toward it forcefully by the man that was now her husband, everything was black except for the bed sheet, the floor was black, the wall was black, the bed was black.

“I have been waiting for this moment for so long, to finally possess you,” the man said.

Tuesday Travel 174: Witch Raising: The Book of Earth 21

Welcome to Tuesday Travel. This week we are following Brownie on her journey as she is going toward the second element: Earth.

 

About Witch Raising.

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches. 

 

The excerpt, we start right where we left off last week.

 

He grabbed her chin with his hand and pulled her head up for her to look at him, she kept her eyes down so that her eyes never really met his.

“You will be mine very soon,” he said.

She didn't answer, she was shaking like a leaf. Her body was in fight or fly mode, ready to fly but she was like a deer taken by the light of a car in the middle of the road. Her brain couldn't register.

“Tomorrow daughter, tomorrow we will celebrate the wedding,” her father said.

He seemed happy.

Brownie was sewing when looked like her wedding gone. She stuck her finger with the needle an a drop of blood feel on the immaculate white fabric. It wasn't white any more nor immaculate but she didn't care. She didn't love the man her father was giving her too and she knew she would have to cook his meal and share his bed and do all the task he would ask of her.

She wanted to die but she was too cowardly to take her own life. For Brownie, this was infuriating. She had fought so much, in so many life, she was so strong but his version of herself was crowling into submission and couldn't even think straight about saving herself. For sure it was a differrent time but this Brownie was helpless, she didn't even have magic, at least not yet. Brownie wanted to help her but she couldn't do anything in her past life but watch as her own heart was taking blow after blow and the old wound that never seemed to have fully healed opened again.

She wanted to hate herself for her weakness but she couldn't. It was as if she was sucked into the mode of thinking of her past self, something terrible would happen if she talked back, something terrible would become of her, even worse that marrying the terrible man.

There was a man standing with her father. This one at least, Brownie recognise. It was the main demon after her. He was a constant in all her past lifes as well as in this one, he had been looking for her. She was wearing an imperial uniform of high rank. Brownie knew as much but she couldn't remember more, her past life self wasn't telling her more, she lowered her head in front of the men, looking down toward their knees but she was still listening as they talked about her as if she wasn't there. She was boiling on the inside but she couldn't fight. She was a girl and she couldn't talk to men without being invited to do so and then she would have to say something pleasing, something they wanted to hear. She didn't want to marry that man but she would have too and she was scared because she was waiting for the two boys to come back but they might never make it in time.
