Mystery Monday 125: Murder at the Conference 22

Welcome to Mystery Monday. This week, we continue with Murder at the Conference.

Let's get back where we left off with chapter 2 last time.

I already know where the conversation was going. Seiji wanted to fix everything, to get everything right but I didn't know if it was possible or not. It somehow scared me a bit, his need for a major change. Something that would take centuries and need a lot of people to turn around, a new social order that I couldn't even define. I didn't want to talk about it much, every time all I could see were the problems in his plan, the way people would be replaced by machine, the way everyone would be left without a job and still everything provided. He would tell me that people would finally be free, able to do everything they wanted. But I knew from history that revolutions tried to do that and it always turned out badly. Somehow, it took strength and courage to be free, freedom wasn't something you could give to people, it was something they had to take for themselves, to fight for. Like I fought to be able to study and get my degree and get this life. Like Kaji had fought so that his research would only be used for a good cause.

An Seiji's plan didn't seem too realistic either. It's not like he wanted to fix diseases one at a time, he wanted to fix them all at once, to find the global answer. And as a physicist with no unified theory yet, I knew there wasn't any global answer to be found, especially when the system became more and more complex. But he would tell me that for every idea, everyone thought it was crazy until it worked. I just wasn't sure I wanted to see it work.

“Yes, I will be able to do whatever I want, I'll have time to study more in every direction I need and so I'll become proficient and I'll understand how things work and how to go about it.”

“Nice,” I said.

“Ok, anyway, here is your bowl.”
