Mystery Monday 115: Murder at the Conference 12

Welcome to Mystery Monday. This week, we continue with Murder at the Conference.

Let's get back where we left off with chapter 1 last time.

He was sitting at his desk, behind his two screens. Not a single paper out of place and once again, I wonder how he did it. The students here were the same. Nothing on the desk when they left the place. Not a paper to be read in the morning, not an equation half the way through written on a small piece of paper. I used to work on normal paper but he decided that I was messy so that I needed to work in a notebook or I would lose things. I always found my stuff. With the notebook, it was more difficult because I couldn't actually organise things by topics, they had to be chronological, it was a pain. And my desk was still a mess. Because I didn't see the point of tiding up everything every evening to get it messy again the next day, I would forget what I had been working on if it wasn't jumping at my face when I arrived at the lab. I had never had any issues with messiness before I arrived here. In my previous lab, I looked even organised.

I walked to the desk and gave him my last poster print. He took it and just looked at it with what seemed like blank eyes as if he was thinking about something else.

“I don't like this title,” he finally said after a couple of uncomfortable minutes.

Even after a few years here I still didn't know what I was supposed to do in his office. He never invited me to take a sit, that was for sure. I didn't know if I should stand there waiting and doing nothing or just walk out and wait for him to come and get me.

“That's the same as the conference paper,” I said.

“I know but it looks too big for the poster,” he said.
