Thursday Taster 65: Parallel Slip

Hello and welcome to a new Thursday Taster, the day when awesome writers all over the blogosphere come together to give you tasty bits of their last fiction. You can find the list here.
I looked through the window and sighed deeply. This was supposed to be my day of freedom but it was like giving back all the power over me to my mother.
"I talked to her, it took a while but we agreed to give you at least a trial period," my father said.
"Great, how long?" I didn't want to look at him, that was betrayal.
"As long as you can go without blacking out," my father said.
"Oh great, that's just great," I said. I might as well have blacked out in the car right now for all I knew.
"That's all I could get," my father said.
"I don't care, it just mean that tomorrow I'm back at leaving with her and I can say goodbye to my life and my future and I'll just have to wait few month to turn eighteen and have a restricted order," I said. I refused to look at him, he had said that he was not going to let her hurt me again but apparently that was not the case.
"Come on Freddy," he said.
"I'll just lose one year, maybe I'll get a part time job to keep going while waiting next year to register to the university again," I said.
"It's not that bad."
"Don't you get it? I black out every single day, multiple time and I black out even in my sleep, she knows it and she just had you get on with it," I said.
"She doesn't have to know," my father said.
"She doesn't have to know but she only has to stick around long enough for me to black out and it's over, I could black out just as we talk," I said.
I was so angry, I didn't want to see her, I wanted to be left alone. I had things to learn. It was not about the university, or about getting a job, it was about me, it was about understanding what really happened to me, where were these worlds and how to get there on purpose and how to avoid blacking out in front of people and especially, in front of my mother. I couldn't wait any longer, I needed to know and there was nobody who could help me, if I was to tell them the truth, they would definitely lock me up. "Just show her you can take care of yourself and if something happens, you call me," my father said.
"Sure," I answered.
There was no way I could avoid blacking out all day until she left, no way at all. There was no pattern and no warning, I could be in the middle of something and especially with the spaceship universe, that one could get me at anytime. There was something really wrong over there.
"She is not a bad person," my father said.
"Then why did you leave her?" I asked finally looking at him.
"It's complicated," he answered.

  1. Hummmm, yes, complicated. I wonder at her bravery knowing she could always black out. He mother has a right to be concerned and she is still a minor. Well, we will have to see how she deals with it now, knowing that her mother has enlisted the aide of her father. <3 xo

  3. Ah, the classic answer! Great dialogue and depth. Wonder what's causing the blackouts?
