Wormfest 2014

Today is the Wormfest blogfest, hosted by Stephen Tremp, L. Diane Wolfe, and Alex J. Cavanaugh. (Yes Mark, I just hyperlinked myself.)

The rules:
Name one thing where science advances mankind, and one where technology with unforeseen consequences will go too far and set mankind back. (And they can be the same thing.) Example: De-Extinction, or bringing back extinction species through back breeding, genetic engineering, and cloning. With all the breakthrough discoveries mankind is on the cusp of, are we playing God?

My choice: The air-conditioner.
I'm going to use it for the up side and the down side.

It is true that it's really agreeable to be able to set the temperature to what we want it to be at any time of the day and of the night. It also allows us not to freeze when travelling from one side to the other side of the planet in air planes.
But air conditioner also has disadvantages: Headache (especially with older model) and rise of the outside temperature as an aggravating factor of  global warming.
Walking in crowded shopping street in the summer, every shop was throwing out their warm air exchanging it for something cooler. It really invited people to enter to refresh themselves until the brusque change of temperature made them go out again because it was too cold. This can really soon become unbearable. The warm air rejected outside increase the greenhouse effect rising the temperature again. The more you try to cool yourself, the more you increase the temperature somewhere else it's a bit like shooting yourself and the planet in the foot. I mean if the planet had feet. Anyway I'm also guilty here.

  1. Wow, I never thought about AC for this but you're so right. Once again we're exchanging personal comfort for damage to the earth. Where will it stop.

  2. I live where it can get really humid in the summer. That air conditioning is coming on!
Thanks for participating in the blogfest.
