Nectarine (A-to-Z challenge 2015)

Hello and welcome to a new A-to-Z fruity post. Today we are going to learn more about the nectarine.

I wanted to talk about noix de coco but this challenge is in English and you guys, call the noix de coco coconuts so I have to stick with the nectarine instead.

The nectarine is the fancy word for peach. Actually if you look up nectarine on wikipedia you are redirected to the peach page. Though my mother always made a point that they were different.... not a chance in a million. Well, maybe a little, peach are fuzzy and nectarine are not, but for the rest, there are the same.

Now doing my research on the nectarine, I got a little confused because the peach tree flowers look a lot like the sakura flowers we have here. You might have seen the picture I put for the 365 challenge yesterday, if not you can always go take a look here.

Now the nectarine is all good and nice and I prefer the yellow version to the white version but what got very interesting during my research was the nectar part of it. I don't know how you learn spelling but French people do it by family, that is supposed to take care of our problems with all the mute letters. Of course you would have guess that nectarine and nectar are from the same family as they contain the same root.

The nectar is a sweet and sugary liquid produce my plants from their nectarie glands. That's the thing that call on the pollinating insects such as butterflies and bees and that's the main ingredient for honey. The nectar always sounded like the elixir of the kings that would give you eternal life, at least to me. I guess maybe that's not far from the truth.

  1. I can't believe I never made the connection between "nectarine" and "nectar". LOL It's so obvious, but I completely missed it!

  2. Yeah, isn't it something about nectarines just being peaches that are missing the fuzz gene? I think? They are tasty, whatever they are :)
