Vampire Friday: Vampire Heart 404

Welcome to a new part of Vampire Heart unedited. Have you been bitten yet? 

Summary of the previous episodes: Viorel has been tortured by his supposed family who wanted to have him burn in the sun. Strangely enough the sun didn't burn him as expected but Viorel has no memory of who he is. Following the advises of his supposed father, he left Sighișoara and is now traveling to the West. After some skirmish in a previous city, he found refuge on a boat. Viorel is now in Vienna. The little problem is that the guy at the inn was a bit of an asshole and helped capture Viorel thinking he was a vampire, which he is but nobody needs to know. Now there is a huge man (which I call the colossi) taking care of Viorel and a priest. They brought a girl. Torture my holy water... Fail. Viorel managed to confuse everyone, now he would like to get out of here. But the girl seems pretty useless. They still managed to escape and he left the girl to the care of the boat lady before going back to have two words with his captors but his power of persuasion were failing him. The priest wanted to crack a deal but Viorel is not really up to help his enemies. He finally got some blood but he can't risk to stay in Vienna. He travel to Linz were he stays a bit to learn German.

Viorel wanted to go to Praha but redirect himself toward Augsburg instead where he wants to get a horse, except that the horses are a bit scared of his vampirism and maybe something else. Viorel is really not a horse expert. Then he comes into an altercation with couple of people, he wants some fear in his blood. The girl Viorel has found seemed to enjoy the game. Viorel prepares for the nightmares that come with a feast of blood, in a rush to leave, he cross the dukedom of Lorrain.
We introduced Sorina, three weeks after the beginning of Viorel's escape.
Viorel dreamed of Sorina and woke up not really remembering anything. Traveling to Paris, he arrives at "La cour des miracles". He is rescued by a stranger who turned out to be Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist he was looking for. Nicolas does some strange experiment without Viorel's agreement. Some people are looking for Nicolas's secrets. On the other side of Europe, Sorina awakes and Viorel's past in haunting him. Viorel discovered that he can change into a wolf but that's not the easiest thing to handle. After finding out that a younger version of Nicolas might not be acting with his best interest at heart, Viorel decides to leave for the north. He is now traveling with two people, Alexej who needed to get out of Praha and Irina who he accidentally rescued.

 

 

Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last time.

 

"My father died trying to protect the last of them," he said. I could read in his eyes that he was about to do the same, that he owned it, to his father.

"I can assure you that you won't have to do the same. I won't die tomorrow. But if you make sure Alexei is safe when Jorge takes me out, that might help a little."

He smiled and sat his back on his chair and his head up looking at the ceiling, the back of it on the wall.

"You will die, there is no way out, the sunlight killed every vampire who ever entered these walls," he said.

"Thank you for underestimating me."

I made him laugh.

"I told you not to talk to him," Jorge said appearing again. Apparently it was time for our little discussion.

"I was trying to gather information," my guard said standing up.

There were five Jägers with Jorge, as if he was so important that he needed bodyguards in his own house. But I had the feeling they were also here for me.

Jorge's footsteps were heavier than the first time he had entered the room and he looked pissed. Something about the dragons probably didn't go his way. At least I could rejoice that I had managed to get the people to stop hunting them for a while. If Jorge was already tired, after possibly having been up all night, he would be easier to take down. Heavier footsteps meant that he would slow down in combat.

Maybe, only maybe but that was enough hope to make my heart flutter. I just had to hope that Alexei was going to make it until then.

"Do you agree with that?" I asked.

"I don't have to agree with anything Jorge does," he said looking away at Alexei as if to mentionned that the torture was also bothering him.

"But if you think about it, do you agree with what is happening now?"

"If I have to take a decision about what to do, I would let your friend rest and see how his transformation behave normally before forcing anything on him," he said.

"Then what is stopping you?"

"I don't have to decide, and if I try, they might as well give me the same medicine they gave Jarek," he said.

"What was in his blood had nothing to do with who you are, it's more ancient then your order," I said.

"Yes, it comes from a race of people who are long gone," he said. He looked straight at me. "Just like your race will be soon, because that's the sort of things we take care of."

"So why use their science?"

"We learned from them, surpassed them, eliminated them so that they wouldn't eliminate us," he said.

"And your father agreed with that?"

"I kill people when I need and want to," I said. "Sometimes by necessity like tonight, sometimes by pleasure. And I can assure you when I'll get Jorge in my hands, that will be a little bit of both." 

 

I smiled showing him my fangs and he had a draw back motion. I wondered if he was considering me like an insane human who drunk blood or like something else entirely. But I knew for sure that he was afraid, his blood smelled way too sweet. 

 

"My father didn't believe that killing was an viable option, killing always lead to more killing," he said.

 

It reminded me of my mother but I wasn't going to give him this information.

 

"Is that why your kind wants to exterminate my kind? Because killings leads to more killing?" I asked. I was ironic but I already had the feeling that his father was something more than the Jägers I had met, something much more than Jorge.

 

"My father wouldn't have killed you, but Jorge will, tomorrow and I bet that will be a public execution in front of the people you tried to protect to have them go back to hunt the dragons," he said.

 

I smiled. If that was really what Jorge intended to do, I could count on my little surprise to have the people rise against him.

"Because the people involved, you and Jorge, might use the eggs to do I don't know what against people like me. That's my first preoccupation. Secondly, I made sure this afternoon that humans were not going to go hunt for the dragons again. I was fighting with them, they were pathetic and pitiful. Seeing them fight without standing a chance is depressing."

 

"Depressing..."

 

"Thirdly, if humans in the situation of power like Jorge don't care about people lower than them, who will? I do."

 

"And you don't want to drink their blood?" he asked.

 

"I might kill some of them before moving on but that's only the natural way of life, no mass murder," I said.

 

"So you don't have any pleasure when you kill?" He said.

 

"Of course I do, but not all the time, it depends on the prey," I said.

 

"You see us as individuals?" 

 

"Well that's what you are, aren't you? Each of you, different than the others," I said.

 

"I thought, that you just saw us like we see cattle or sheep."

 

"You can talk, and I can understand you, that's enough to create empathy."

 

"So you kill people because there is no connection? I don't get it."

He looked straight at me amazed by my response probably. I didn't lie, if he opened the door just now, I might as well let him live and let him take care of his thirst for knowledge.

 

"Why wouldn't you just run away? There are a lot of us here?" he asked.

 

"Because people have been dying trying to steal a dragon egg and I want to know why." 

 

"Is it more important than your own life?" 

 

"Doesn't it bother you to see every valuable man in this city dying because of the pursuit of a dragon when even hundreds of them together can't get close to it?"

 

"Does it bother you?"

 

"It does," I said. 

 

"Why? You are a vampire, you kill these people, they are your prey, you rule over them, you are a monster, if loose you would kill..."

 

"All of them? Is that what you believe? How many death by vampire did you record lately..."

 

"I don't know I..."

 

"You're father taught you to think, go ahead."

 

"But why does it bother you?"

"They were going to kill me if they had a chance. The first man I killed him because he was one of you and you are a danger to me. I think he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. The second I killed him because he was a jerk. I mean he hit his junior for asking a fair question and I hate that kind of behavior, he was narrow minded, that's enough to want to kill a person I suppose."

 

"And Jarek?"

 

"I didn't kill him. I drunk his blood which was pretty interesting and let him live," I said.

 

"He is dead," my guard said.

 

"It wasn't me, he was alive when I left him and I stopped the bleeding, I'm sure he still had enough blood to keep going, even weak."

 

"I don't believe you," my guard said.

 

"I never asked you to, but I don't see why I would lie about him in particular, I didn't know him, except from what I saw drinking his blood and beside, I killed more people than I can count so one more or less won't really make a difference."

 

He sighed and looked away.

 

"If I opened the door for you now, what would you do?" 

 

"I'll take care of the ones torturing Alexei and make sure he is somewhere safe, then I'll go for Jorge," I said.

The question was unexpected, but my guard was the talkative type after all, and listening to someone being tortured while not participating in it was somehow boring. At least it was to me and I couldn't help but dosing off, unable to grab any real benefit from the poisonous blood they had me drink.

 

"Because it was either them or me," I said.

 

"Why did you come here in the first place?" 

 

"This guy over there is the closest thing I have to a friend and he is taking care of my horses," I said. I didn't like being questioned too much, I had enough questioning when I lived in Sighișoara or with Nicolas but educating this guy to my view couldn't hurt, as long as I stayed away from anything personal or precise about vampires.

 

"So you can't drink his blood because he is a wolf changer?" he asked.

 

"They are called lycanthropes where I come from," I said. "And I don't drink his blood because I don't drink everyone's blood."

 

"Why not?"

 

"That's way too much food, and not everyone deserve to die. He never did anything wrong to me, or anyone as far as I'm concern so I don't see why I should kill him." To tell the truth I was now certain that Alexei had been the perpetrator of the mutilation in Praha and that was pretty horrifying but it still had nothing to do with me. 

 

"So what did they do to you for you to kill them?"

Vampire Friday: Vampire Heart 397

Welcome to a new part of Vampire Heart unedited. Have you been bitten yet? 

Summary of the previous episodes: Viorel has been tortured by his supposed family who wanted to have him burn in the sun. Strangely enough the sun didn't burn him as expected but Viorel has no memory of who he is. Following the advises of his supposed father, he left Sighișoara and is now traveling to the West. After some skirmish in a previous city, he found refuge on a boat. Viorel is now in Vienna. The little problem is that the guy at the inn was a bit of an asshole and helped capture Viorel thinking he was a vampire, which he is but nobody needs to know. Now there is a huge man (which I call the colossi) taking care of Viorel and a priest. They brought a girl. Torture my holy water... Fail. Viorel managed to confuse everyone, now he would like to get out of here. But the girl seems pretty useless. They still managed to escape and he left the girl to the care of the boat lady before going back to have two words with his captors but his power of persuasion were failing him. The priest wanted to crack a deal but Viorel is not really up to help his enemies. He finally got some blood but he can't risk to stay in Vienna. He travel to Linz were he stays a bit to learn German.

Viorel wanted to go to Praha but redirect himself toward Augsburg instead where he wants to get a horse, except that the horses are a bit scared of his vampirism and maybe something else. Viorel is really not a horse expert. Then he comes into an altercation with couple of people, he wants some fear in his blood. The girl Viorel has found seemed to enjoy the game. Viorel prepares for the nightmares that come with a feast of blood, in a rush to leave, he cross the dukedom of Lorrain.
We introduced Sorina, three weeks after the beginning of Viorel's escape.
Viorel dreamed of Sorina and woke up not really remembering anything. Traveling to Paris, he arrives at "La cour des miracles". He is rescued by a stranger who turned out to be Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist he was looking for. Nicolas does some strange experiment without Viorel's agreement. Some people are looking for Nicolas's secrets. On the other side of Europe, Sorina awakes and Viorel's past in haunting him. Viorel discovered that he can change into a wolf but that's not the easiest thing to handle. After finding out that a younger version of Nicolas might not be acting with his best interest at heart, Viorel decides to leave for the north. He is now traveling with two people, Alexej who needed to get out of Praha and Irina who he accidentally rescued.

 

 Now, let's continue with Vampire Heart, right where we left off last time.

 

"It used to be recorded but not anymore. We used to just record but something change and only a few have access to the archive, the rest of us, he said pointing at the one torturing Alexei, we are just soldiers. My father, he taught me a bit. He told me we were supposed to observe and learn from you but not interfere, same with the wolves. He was against the experiments. He just wanted to record history and improve mankind's knowledge."

 

"Is that why you don't have access to books?" I asked, "Because your father taught you how to think?" 

 

"I don't know what you are talking about," he said. "Jorge is right, I shouldn't be talking to you." 

 

"How do you know he is right if you don't even know what I am?" 

 

He walked back to his chair and didn't answer. He was puzzled, I could see it. But that was a fail for me. I didn't expect to make him my friend, not even an ally. I sat in the corner, making sure to face to door. If they wanted to talk to me as Jorge said which sounded more like torture me the way they were doing Alexei right now, they would have to get me out first and I could prepare for that. Starting with struggle didn't feel like a very good idea most of the time, especially when I didn't have a chance against all of them, but I decided that I could at least take some of them out one at a time to decrease their numbers instead of passively being tortured. Even if that meant increasing the awareness of my dangerousness for the rest of them. 

 

"Why did you kill them?"

"Sorry, maybe that was inappropriate," I said smiling, this time, my fangs were gone and I had my most human smile.

"You are not like I imagined you would be," the guard said.

"And what did you imagine?"

"Something we couldn't contain. I would think you would have jumped in every corner of the room. Seeing what you did to the others..." he marked a pause.

I stayed thinking. This sounded like a trap to me. He couldn't possibly have confused me with an animal. Jägers knew about vampires, that was for sure, they knew that we were somehow refined despite a bad drinking habit.

"Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you," I said.

I wasn't going to get him to free me, nor was I going to get the keys from his side from where I was standing. I needed a new plan, I went back a bit, I wanted to sit in a corner to reflect on my perspective.

"Would you teach me?" he asked.

"What do you mean?" I said, he had picked my curiosity.

"About your kind, would you teach me?"

"Come on, I heard your Jorge guy, you know everything about my kind, it's all recorded in your books, what else could you possibly want to know?"

"I have nothing I want to share with you," the guard said.

"That's too bad for me then, but he won't survive long if they keep it at that rhythm though," I said looking past him to Alexej. He wasn't in such a bad shape, considering.

"What do you mean?"

"There is a difference between the human mind under torture and the animal's mind. He might be in his human body right now but by torturing him, you are locking him up in his animal's mind," I said. I wasn't sure, but somehow it sounded truth. Alexej didn't answer any of their question of course but I doubted it was because he had a strong will not to. He was still a wolf inside of his mind and he was therefore unable to speak. It was physical.

"You are talking nonsense," the guard said looking away to Alexej.

I silently took few steps forward. From there I was still unable to reach for the keys or for his neck but that was still better.

"Think about it," I said. "I saw him change slowly, he was not himself for few days, preceding to full transformation. He can change into a wolf all right but it's progressive, you kicked him back to his human shape but god knows where the rest of his mind is."

"Don't talk about god you monster," the guard said. Surprised to see my closer to the wall he took a step back.

"You know, that guy," I said pointing at Alexei on the other side of the room. "I observed his comportment for a long time now, he has absolutely no control over his transformation."

I was half bluffing but I needed the guard to come closer. He was sitting on his chair, sword in hand, taping the tip of it to the ground in absolute boredom but the keys were hanging at his side. I reviewed our fight in my head several times. I could take him, I would definitely break free using him. I needed to pick his curiosity and Alexej was my best bet, even though it was still dangerous to use him. The man could just decide to have a look for himself.

"He knew he was going to change so he removed his shirt, but that's about it. He is forced to travel because it's a carnage around him at each full moon and he doesn't want to be caught. He looks like a dog, even during the day, in his behavior. He is..."

"I'm not allowed to talk to you, you heard Jorge," the guard said.

He then looked away from me as if that was going to remove the temptation but I still had his ears and I knew it.

"I heard Jorge, he wants knowledge but I don't want to give mine to him, he is too arrogant, so I'll give it to you," I said.

"Why?" the man turned to me.

"I would lie if I said that I found you sympathetic but well I never discussed transformation with anyone before and you seem to know about it so I thought we could learn from each other."

He stood up and came closer, that was a good first step, I needed to keep his attention, to push the though in his head that he needed me out.
