WeWriWar 222: Rainbow catcher

Welcome to a new excerpt of Rainbow Catcher for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday.

Now let's go back to our story.

Summary of previous episodes: Clarissa is coughing and wanted to watch Everett Cooper on TV but Jason refused, she is due to get her rainbow the next day but she seems scared, to make her feel better Jason leave the TV on. Clarissa tried to explain about rainbows, she is a big fan of Everett Cooper but Jason is not too sure about it. Clarissa complained about her dialophone but Jason needs to go to work. Before completely leaving he is thinking about getting her her rainbow. We flashed back to the meeting Jason had with a rainbow seller at the black market. Jason left Clarissa's room to go to work. Jason was talking to his boss about the rainbow coming the next day. Jason prepared the money for the rainbow in a sport bag and went to the hospital. The rainbow seller arrived for the delivery. But it was a scam and Jason prepares to go get the rainbow himself in the desert. Markus has a last surprise for him.

We start just where we left off last week.

He didn’t want to stay too long. The look they threw at him showed that they were either not used to strangers or at least not to strangers arriving alone. The only thing making this village viable was the weekly arrival of the bus. That’s how Jason realized that he had gone very far away from Polysky city already.

He took some oil on a shelf and walked to the counter, he wanted to go away from here as soon as possible. He ordered a drink, just water. The man behind the counter gave him a strange look. He had the hugest hands Jason had ever seen in his life, they looked incredibly flat as if they had been stuck somewhere with a lot of weight on them.

The shop was made of stone, yellow stones from the desert, the kind of stones that just hadn’t been transformed into sand yet but would probably be one day. One thing the desert had told Jason during his first ride was that nothing could stop it. There was a little girl playing with a broken doll at the entrance. The big smile on her face reminded Jason of Clarissa’s before their parents died. He wondered if he would ever see her smile so innocently or if the lost of their parents and the pain of her disease had forever taken her joy away from her. He walked around observing. The entire village seemed to be standing at the bar watching TV, playing darts or sitting at the tables to read newspapers. He asked himself how many people could be living here.

He felt that the desert was giving him some impalpable knowledge and he wanted more of it as much as he knew he couldn’t get out anymore before finishing his initiation to this new kind of thoughts.
He reached the first city within few hours. It wasn’t really a city as it was only composed of one street. He parked the bike and turned it off in front of the only shop. As expected the engine was already cold, he opened the box on the side with no effort and removed the moon catcher before sliding it in his left pocket.
He entered the shop before taking away the cloth covering his face. It was a shop, a pub, a restaurant, a post office, everything all at once. An old woman was rocking herself on her chair at the entrance singing for herself a tune which seemed to have been lost in ages.

He was alone in the desert, and only the desert was watching him. He knew that he could hide nothing from the desert and he had nothing to fear as long as he would keep watching the unmovable desert. He had nobody to give account to, nobody for who he should watch his behavior, nobody looking at him, nobody expecting anything from him. It was a new love story between him and the desert and as the desert’s yellow air was digging inside him he felt closer to himself than he had ever been. He wondered if that was what had happened to Markus as well, if that was the sensation of freedom from the bike that was enhanced by the deep knowledge of loneliness. It wasn’t a sad loneliness. It was more like the sensation of being where he should have been a long time ago to accomplish himself fully before being able to reach to other people.

It was painful for his entire body but it seemed to be curing him from inside. As if the desert was starting to talk to him and to tell him what to do. He felt like one with the universe surrounding him. He had nothing to see, nothing to look for. The desert in his monochromatic immensity and boring yellow was bringing him to peace. He had nothing to think about anymore except his goal. As he was getting deeper and deeper in the desert or as the desert was getting deeper and deeper inside of him, he felt closer to his goal and to what he really wanted and it seemed to him like an evidence that he would get it. It was as if all those things inside of him and yelling to go out all of those years when he was a kid were finally ready to let the true him express himself.

In the desert, there was no wind, the time seemed fixed and everything around immutable. It was like being lost in the immensity. If the wind was coming from somewhere, at least it would give the impression that there was a border where it was created. Without the wind everything was the same in the desert. It was as if nothing in this place had changed or could change. Now that he was deep in the sand road, the track of other cars appeared in front of him as if they had been there forever. He couldn’t tell if the car was far or close, all he could say was that it had been there before him and that it was now out of sight.
But the desert was also entering his heart.

You could see old woman washing their clothes at the fountain, people using the water to wet the road so that it didn’t become sticky by melting under the suns. People taking care of flowers, people everywhere were using water for their daily purposes. The water was everywhere and he had never been thirsty. He realized how things some people took for granted could be extremely precious for others. He would have gladly treasured every drops of water that were wasted in the city. He would have liked to use it to create something green and blue here in the middle of the immense yellow desert.
Another thing that struck him as he pursued his course through the desert was the absence of wind. Of course the speed of the bike was making the air move around him and giving him the impression that he was moving in a hot and palpable wind but the effect was only created by his own speed.

The yellow air burned him from inside every time he was inhaling, he couldn’t even imagine the effect it would have on his naked skin outside. He knew how Markus had gotten sick in the desert.
He was progressing fast, getting deeper and deeper in the desert with every turn of wheels, feeling grateful to have the bike instead of the long hours he would have spent in the bus, his spirit lost in the yellow. He was waiting for the first town to appear. He would have given anything for some water and that was another new thing.
In Polysky city, he had never felt thirsty. Even in the low quarter where he was living, there were fountains everywhere, almost in every street. During the summer, the kids used to play in them in their bathing suits.

We start just where we left off last week and continue with chapter 4.

He already asked himself how he would have lived in the desert without the bike and he had just barely entered it.
The sand was yellow. Even the sky seemed yellow. It was as if the yellow wanted to enter him every time he breathed. He had to stop to cover his mouth and nose with a cloth.
The yellow was burning. The first sun bite his skin through his jumper. He wished to remove it but from the blurry memory he had about last night dinner and Gena's explanation, he knew better.

Several things about the desert were uncommon in Jason’s ordinary life and they were not minor changes.
You didn’t enter the desert, the desert came to get you, was the first thought that came to Jason’s mind.
The air was yellow. Was it because of the first sun being the only one raised when he reached the desert? Or was it because of the deep yellow color of the sand? Jason couldn’t say.
He felt absorbed by the color, no matter where he looked there was nothing else. What was supposed to be the road had been covered long ago by the sand and the only thing which allowed him not to lose track in the desert was the speed of the moon catcher helping him to go straight no matter the obstacles he had to drive around.

“I can wait for Gena to arrive,” Jason said.
“It will take her forever, I don’t like parting so much and you don’t want to see me cry, just go,” Markus said, placing his helmet in the bike's truck.
Jason gave Markus a half hug. He was also feeling a bit nostalgic. He composed himself knowing that Markus wouldn’t like to see him cry either and resumed his position on the bike.
“Head right south, it’s the faster way,” Markus said.
Jason turned on the contact and the bike started with its usual strange noises. He waved at Markus one last time and headed right south toward the unknown of the desert.

As the speed decreased he observed that they were exactly where they should be.
“I knew you would love it,” Markus said looking at him as if he could read everything on Jason's face.
“You told me to stop so long ago, I was sure we would be much further,” Jason said.
“I know how difficult to stop it is once you are driving it, so I took a chance, it was better to stop early,” Markus said.
“I think I’ll go by bike, if you still want to give it to me,” Jason said.
“Of course, I knew it all along, kid,” Markus said giving him an friendly clap on the shoulder.
“I really wasn’t sure myself,” Jason said.
“That seemed pretty obvious, now go and bring us a nice rainbow back,” Markus said getting down from the bike.

It was as if he had known all along that Jason could do it. And he did it. He didn’t turn around to ask Markus if he was ready, he pressed the button with his right thumb and the moon catcher took care of the rest.
He could see it clearly, the road in front of him had disappear transformed into lines and he knew exactly what to do each time the lines broke putting a car or a turn in his trajectory. It was easy. Riding with the moon catcher was easier than walking or even breathing. Jason didn’t want to stop but Markus was knocking at his back repeatedly. He pushed the button against his will once more wondering how far from Green Sun Valley they had gone.

“Keep going, keep going,” Markus said encouragingly.
Jason constantly looked at the quadrant. He knew that higher than 60 tours per minutes Markus would ask him to start the moon catcher and he didn’t feel ready for that... Not yet.
He tried to maintain the speed lower for a bit but it was useless, the bumps in the road were making it difficult to stay at one particular speed and keep his balance then higher speed seemed more comfortable.
Jason took a deep breath, he had to do it, at least just this once, and the sooner he would do it, the sooner he would stop, if he was ever able to stop.
He accelerated suddenly. He could feel Markus move to get his feet more in the back of the bike's ground.

WeWriWar 208: Rainbow catcher

Welcome to a new excerpt of Rainbow Catcher for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday.
Sorry about last week, I totally forgot it was Sunday until Tuesday, so...
Anyone planning to participate in JuNoWriMo next month?

Now let's go back to our story.

Summary of previous episodes: Clarissa is coughing and wanted to watch Everett Cooper on TV but Jason refused, she is due to get her rainbow the next day but she seems scared, to make her feel better Jason leave the TV on. Clarissa tried to explain about rainbows, she is a big fan of Everett Cooper but Jason is not too sure about it. Clarissa complained about her dialophone but Jason needs to go to work. But it was a scam and Jason prepares to go get the rainbow himself in the desert. Markus has a last surprise for him.

We start just where we left off last time.

“I’m not saying I’m taking it, I’m just giving it a try until Green Sun Valley,” Jason said.
“Of course, but if you don’t take it away, Gena will probably burn it to aches and me with it,” Markus said laughing.
“You can still hide it somewhere before she arrives, except if she has a moon catcher too,” Jason said sitting on the bike.
“Don’t get too confident, you still have to drive it,” Markus said sitting behind him.
And that was not an easy task. It took three attempts before Jason could actually have the bike well enough in hand to reach normal average speed without it stopping by itself. He was scared of the speed already, every time he drove too fast, he braked so hard that the engine didn’t bear the abrupt change and died.
