Brownie is a normal girl, or so she thinks. She likes to chat with her sisters about random things, she likes fashion and she is member of the fashion club at school. But one day, as her little brother gets really sick because of a curse placed on him, she meets this really strange guy who cures him absorbing the baby's sickness within himself. As he is about to fall from his new acquired fever, Brownie sees Yue's soul and immediately falls in love with him. But Yue is not a human, Yue is a demon.

Plot:

Until Yue's soul is stolen. There is nothing left of their love. The purple light dancing in Yue's grey eyes is gone. Forever? Not quite. Brownie is desperate to find it back. And to get a soul stolen by demons, she needs to go deep into dark magic! But Brownie is not a witch, she is just looking for a spell powerful enough to bring her love back. When an amateur starts playing with strong magic without preparation and without caring for the consequences, things turn wrong...

“Are you trying to scare my customers? You stink.” The witch behind the counter wasn’t the most polite, but Brownie didn’t expect her to be.

She placed the incenses on the counter. 

“Just arriving from a boat,” she said with the weirdest accent she could manage, to hide the trembling of her voice. “Leaving tonight.”

“I hope sooner,” the witch answered.

Brownie noticed some stones, grabbed an aquamarine and placed it on the counter.

A few other demons and dark creatures were going out of the nearby shops. She kept her head down, as if not looking at them would make them go away. She heard some complaints about the smell but again, nobody noticed it came from her. As she entered the shop, an elegant old demon female fainted in the first alley. Someone who appeared to be her son, took her out for fresh air, leaving Brownie the only customer in the boutique.

With a quick glance, she found out the incenses section, and looked for the olibanum.

“Where is it? Where is it?” her hands were shaking, but she finally found it and walked to the counter.

His companion was a lot smaller, with dark green wings agitating in his back and piercing yellow eyes. Brownie put her head down and walked pass them. She attempted to walk like a demon without having an exact idea of what it actually looked like. When she arrived near them, they shouted at each other, and complained about the smell but didn’t notice it came from her. As they flew away, she breathed deeply to calm herself down, her back to the wall. Her heart raced in her chest. The shop she aimed for was only a few meters down the street. She swallowed hard and walked again.

She arrived in the main street and looked for the dark street. It was supposed to be here somewhere. She had passed it several times in her life before, but she had never noticed it, at least not until she had to walk in. Here it was narrow and dark, even darker than she remembered, for a second she wished to have someone with her but this wasn’t the time for self-pity.

As she walked down the path two drunken demons walked out of a bar, fighting in front of her. She jumped slightly backward but quickly resisted her instinct to run. One was red haired, not naturally red haired but his dirty hair had been dyed with a very flashy red colour and a tattoo was printed on his face and running down his neck. His long coat covered with mud trailed on the ground.

Where had Dylan found it? What did he want to do with it? Or why he had given it to her would stay a mystery. She dug it in her pocket and left without finishing her tea.

The city centre was about a forty-minute walk from here. Brownie was glad to have woken up so early and to have met no-one on the way. Even if her disguise was safer, she still felt a bit ridiculous walking down the street looking like a zombie and smelling like fish. The fish smell was the worst, barely bearable for her already, but at least it made her feel safe.

He left the room without leaving Brownie a chance to answer.

Brownie unwrapped the handkerchief slowly expecting to find something even more disgusting than a dead fish. But it wasn’t the case, it was a medallion with two crosses and a five-branch star in the middle.

“Do I look like I am?” Brownie took a sip of her tea; it tasted strangely bitter this morning.

She had to calm her nerves before going and Dylan was always the best person for that. She wouldn’t have to worry about hurting his feelings by answering dryly.

Dylan smirked and put his hand in his deep coat pocket looking for something wrapped in a blue handkerchief stained with blood that he threw at Brownie.

“Catch!” He walked to the door then suddenly turned around.

“Hey, just in time before sunrise.” He looked at her surprised. “Who are you?”

She turned around, walked to the window with her cup of tea, closed it and pulled the curtains.

“Did you ever learn about doors?” she pointed at the kitchen door on the opposite side of the room. “Normal people walk through them when they come back home. That avoids surprises.”

Dark around the eyes, deep purple lips, messy hair, dressed all in black. Looking at herself in the mirror, she could have thought that she was someone else. Would that be enough for the demons not recognizing her as a human? With the fish’s smell, she stood a chance.

She went down to the kitchen, got some bread out of the cupboard and some jam for breakfast and made herself a cup of tea. While pressing the blade of the knife on the bread she paused and sighed; there was no need. Her stomach wouldn’t let her eat anything, she wasn’t in the mood for any food. She left the knife on the table; someone less stressed out would use it later.

The house was quiet with everybody asleep or out hunting. She got up quietly. She had better get ready with the make up and weird smell, before the others woke up. She didn’t want to let them know that she was about to do something so foolish and dangerous.

“Don’t you come here alone,” Yue had said.

It was too late to think it over. Sometimes you needed to do things you were not supposed to do. She knew from the day she fell in love with him that this relationship was dangerous in itself.

She sat in her bed trying to put herself back together, this time she was coming for it. She looked at the alarm clock. It was only 6 am and still dark outside. She lay down once more, looking at the ceiling. In a few hours, she would be heading to the Demon World. The sooner she got there the less chance she would have to meet anything nasty or undesirable. She had the list of things she needed on her mind. She knew everything, but after so many failures over the past few weeks she had a hard time believing that was enough.

She looked for it again and again but a strident scream burst her eardrums. Deep inside her she heard a familiar voice.

“Please. Please. Help me. Don’t leave me.”

She turned around just to see the purple dancing light vanish into some green fire. She tried to reach it but woke up suddenly in cold sweat, breathing heavily. Yue’s soul called for her once more.

WeWriWar 269: Demon Soul

Welcome to a new excerpt of DEMON SOUL for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday. 

Sorry Guys, I have been away on Sundays again. Hopefully I'll be back for a while this time.

 

Pre-Plot:

Brownie is a normal girl, or so she thinks. She likes to chat with her sisters about random things, she likes fashion and she is member of the fashion club at school. But one day, as her little brother gets really sick because of a curse placed on him, she meets this really strange guy who cures him absorbing the baby's sickness within himself. As he is about to fall from his new acquired fever, Brownie sees Yue's soul and immediately falls in love with him. But Yue is not a human, Yue is a demon.

Brownie and Yue will built their love story until....

Plot:

Until Yue's soul is stolen. There is nothing left of their love. The purple light dancing in Yue's grey eyes is gone. Forever? Not quite. Brownie is desperate to find it back. And to get a soul stolen by demons, she needs to go deep into dark magic! But Brownie is not a witch, she is just looking for a spell powerful enough to bring her love back. When an amateur starts playing with strong magic without preparation and without caring for the consequences, things turn wrong...

Let's start right where we left off with the beginning of chapter 2.


 

Brownie ran barefoot in a cave's dark corridor wearing only her pyjamas. Her skin quivered from the cold. The floor was wet under her feet. She had to escape something frightening. She arrived in a bigger room lit by candles and her eyes took a bit of time to adapt to the sudden brightness. The walls were covered with shelves which stored ghostly lights twinkling weakly: Souls.

She tried to find one. She needed only one of them as much as she pitied the others.
