Hump Day Hook 15: Attic Mirror

It's Wednesday Hump Day Hook again. Find the other writers here. It's also Mid-Week Tease, you can find the other writers here.
If you miss my other hooks, they can all be found here.

Attic Mirror is finally available as a kindle on amazon here and as a pdf on Etsy here and on smashwords here

We will continue with Attic Mirror. Last week Hitomi and Demian found strange characters on the mirror... this week, Demian seems to have an explanation.

It’s because we are looking at it in the mirror, there is a reflection, so the left side appear on the right,” he said.
“I’m not sure, it would be the case if the mirror was reflecting something but it seems to be showing us each other like through a glass,” she answered.
“Raw, that’s confusing,” he said scratching the back of his head comically. Hitomi giggled.
“Lets make a test, I’ll move my right hand and you’ll tell me if it’s the right or left hand of me that you see,” she said.
“Alright,” he said concentrating “hum, it’s your right hand, here too.”
“So there is no reflection, it’s just normal but weird for the letters,” she answered.
“And pretty exciting,” he said.

We will continue with Attic Mirror. Today Hitomi is thinking that she is becoming crazy, she just heard some voice coming from inside the mirror apparently...

I don’t even know where that is?” Hitomi said glad that he finally seemed to understand her. After all Teneria wasn’t on any maps she had studied in class.
He took a deep breath wondering how he could be thinking so fast, everything around him had been so boring lately.
“Do you mean that behind this mirror”, he said touching it on his side, “There is another world?”
Hitomi was not really thinking much, just trying not to freak out at the bizarre meeting. She came closer and started to examine the mirror closely. Concentrating on something made her calm down a little more.
“I guess so, there seems to have some inscriptions on it but I can’t read the alphabet”, she said after few minutes.
“I got some strange drawings on my side too”, he said “but I never thought that they could actually mean something.”
She took her notebook and started to draw the symbols to show them to him. He went to take a sheet of paper on his desk and drew as well. They then started to compare.
“It’s strange”, she said, “it looks like they are the same letters but in the opposite direction.

He was finally not that scary after all.
“What’s your name?” she asked.
“Demian Aaron Carter”, he said looking proud. Seeing that she didn’t react he added, “I’m the son of the explorer.”
“Oh”, she said not knowing at all about any explorers of that name. She noted for herself to have a look in the library even though she had always believed that people had stopped exploring the world long ago.
“Never mind”, he answered sitting back on his bed felling weird that someone never heard about his father. “What’s your?”
“Hitomi”, she answered.
“Hitomi, just Hitomi?” he asked a bit puzzled. It was a really short name.
“Yes, just Hitomi”, she answered smiling.
“It’s a nice one”, he said smiling hoping he didn’t offence her with his question.
“It’s Japanese”, Hitomi added knowing that her name wasn’t really a common one for everybody in his part of the world. “What are you reading?”
“The new book about Ylocs that my mum bought me yesterday”, he answered thinking that Japanese was probably a kind of ethnic minority from the mountains.
“Ylocs?” Hitomi thought out loud. She first thought she didn’t hear well, she was pretty sure that the word Yloc wasn’t in the dictionary. “What’s that?” she added.
“You don’t know what an Yloc is? Are you kidding me?” He exclaimed stupefied.
“No, I don’t know, is it something famous?” she asked a bit dubitative, boy used to make big fuse about unknown things all the time, like football players or music bands.
“Famous is not really the word I would have used. They are more indispensable for most things, from which planet are you coming down? You’re strange.” He said trying to laugh and still thinking that she was trying to make fun of him.
“I really don’t know what it is, you’re the strange extraterrestrial of the two”, she said getting a little upset.
“I’m not an extraterrestrial, I’m from right here, I was born in his house in Teneria, just like you but not knowing about Yloc is the strangest thing I ever heard of, how do you get you’re food and mail and travel and all?” he pleaded a bit afraid that she might leave.
“What is Teneria?” Hitomi asked, she was a bit lost but new words were catching her attention as usual like nothing else.
“Wait a minute”, he said, “You mean that you’re not from Teneria.

Hump Day Hook 12: Attic Mirror

It's Wednesday Hump Day Hook again. Find the other writers here. It's also Mid-Week Tease, you can find the other writers here.
If you miss my other hooks, they can all be found here.

We will continue with Attic Mirror. Today Hitomi is thinking that she is becoming crazy, she just heard some voice coming from inside the mirror apparently...

You’re not crazy, well otherwise we both are but I’m pretty sure I’m not and I’m pretty sure I’m awake too,” he said putting down his book to come closer.

She turned to look at him again a bit confused. He was smiling nicely to her and she kind of liked that smile.

“Are you some kind of ghost?” she asked

“And are you some kind of spirit?” he answered laughing a little.

She was looking more and more confused and really didn’t know what to think of all that and he could see it. He was a bit confused too but didn’t want to let her know.

“Listen, I kind of think that it’s pretty cool, I mean to have you appear like that in my mirror. It had always been weird and reddish. I always thought something was wrong with it. But, if you’re feeling awkward, I’ll just put something on my mirror and leave you alone so that you can enjoy yours,” he said turning around to get a blue cover with strange animals drawn on it on his bed. “You’ll just have to knock at the mirror when you go away so that I can use mine again,” he said preparing himself to throw the cover on his side of the mirror.

He was looking a bit sad his cover in his hands and it made Hitomi calm down a little.

“Wait, wait, it’s just weird but I have seen weirder, I see weirder everyday actually,” she said thinking about how one of her brothers had become invisible earlier to make another one of them explode some bottles of paint.

“Really, you must have a very excited life,” the boy said, happy that she had decided to stay a bit.

“Not really, it’s more that things happen around me,” she said. She had always seen herself as the passive spectator for her siblings’ crazy life.

They were always so full of energy that at time she felt like they were draining hers out of her body.
“I know the feeling, you look at them wishing for something extraordinary to be yours but it’s only happening to others,” the boy said smiling as if she was the extraordinary thing he had been waiting all along.

“Pretty much, I mostly have…” she started and hesitated. She wasn’t sure if it was too safe to share her thoughts with a complete stranger.

“The bad consequences,” he finished making her feel like he was maybe not that much of a stranger after all.
“Yeah,” she said and they laughed together.

We will continue with Attic Mirror. Today Hitomi is thinking that she is becoming crazy, she just heard some voice coming from inside the mirror apparently...

Hitomi walked back in front of the mirror but instead of reflecting herself as any good mirror should have done, she could see a boy about her age in what seems to be his bedroom, a bit like if the mirror was a window.
“How did you get in here?” were her first words when she came back from her surprise.
“Well, the same way you did I suppose”, the boy answered staring at her as if she was the most curious thing he had ever seen. But his answer didn’t make much sense for her.
“I’m not in anything”, Hitomi said, “Well just in the attic.”
“And I’m in my room but I see you in my mirror which changes quite a bit from the usual red background I usually have. My first guess would be that you are seeing me in your mirror too”, he explained.
It seemed like a pretty smart guess but Hitomi turned around her head in her hand.
“I’m talking to a mirror, I’m getting crazy, it’s probably all that dust and that weird smell, I must be dreaming”, she stroke the side of her forehead few times, “Wake up! Wake up!””

We will continue with Attic Mirror. Today Hitomi is thinking that she is becoming crazy, she just heard some voice coming from apparently nowhere...

She startled as she had thought herself alone and looked at the door. Nobody was to be seen.
“Maybe you will need a bit of sewing at the bottom”, the voice said again, “It seems a bit torn, but I can’t really see properly from here.”
She turned around again. It was the voice of a boy and it was definitely coming from behind the mirror. She turned around to take a look but didn’t see anyone.
“Where are you?” she asked.
“Just here, in the…” The voice marked a little hesitation and asked “mirror”?”

Hump Day Hook 9: Attic Mirror

It's Wednesday Hump Day Hook again. Find the other writers here. It's also Mid-Week Tease, you can find the other writers here.
If you miss my other hooks, they can all be found here.

We will continue with Attic Mirror. Last week, Yobi was up for some mischiefs covering everyone in paint. Hitomi took the opportunity to escape to the attic. She seems to always end up in the most creepy places, I know.

The shelves were full of old newspapers, disks, old toys and clothes, it felt a bit like a treasure hunt. She tried to tidy up and put one of the dresses in front of her wondering if she could wear it after a good wash. She looked down at herself hoping to have a mirror. When she looked up, she noticed a heavy and dusty red cover which seemed to be hiding something big. She put the dress down and pulled on it, at first it seemed it wasn’t going to move. She sized it at the top and pull harder trying not to make the thing fall on her, it didn’t seem very stable. When the cover went of, she found herself in front of a full size mirror from which were coming strange glints.
She smiled.
“Just what I wanted”, she said turning around to take her dress and put it in front of her again, ready to take a look in the mirror.
“Really, really nice”, she heard a voice say.

Hump Day Hook 8: Attic Mirror

It's Wednesday Hump Day Hook again. Find the other writers here. This week I'm also participating in the Mid-Week Tease, you can find the other writers here.

If you miss my other hooks, they can all be found here but don't worry, I'm posting them randomly so they seem unrelated... maybe.

We are going back to the beginning of Attic Mirror, Hitomi and Grenadine arrived home and Grenadine ran up the stairs to avoid seeing Sedana. The problem is, there is a little trouble maker at home and he is up for some mischiefs.

I'm thinking of reediting Attic Mirror as I found some typos. Please let me know if you have any corrections that would be highly appreciated.
Give it back”, Theo yelled running down the stairs after a flying book.“I won’t, I won’t.” Yobi’s laughing voice said near the book.
“Gideon”, Mark called following Melody in tears holding the pieces of a broken figurine in her hand.
Yobi threw the book in his face giggling and rushing up the stairs making as much noise as possible.
“Outch”, Mark said stroking his forehead and calling again for Gideon as Theo took the torn book and started to call for Gideon too.
Hitomi took Melody on her knees.
“Stop calling him, he is with Sedana and Taika”, she said.
“But Danny made my fairy explode”, Melody said sniffing, “There were pieces everywhere.”
“I’m sure he didn’t mean to do it”, Hitomi said.
Danny still had problems with his telekinetic powers and each time he was concentrating a bit too much on something he generally ended up making it explode.
“Still, it needs to be fixed”, Mark said pushing Melody away from Hitomi to go look for Gideon.
“And I need him to fix the book, Yobi thorn it all apart, look”, Theo said, putting the book under Hitomi’s nose.
“No!” Someone cried upstairs “Grenadine, how many time did I tell you to close the door of the painting room when you’re done with it.”
Yobi ran down the stairs again, all laughing, holding two big bottles of red pain followed closely by Grenadine and Jayden.
“I’m gonna get you”, Theo said walking toward Yobi with an angry look.
“Did you find Gideon?” Danny said walking out from the kids’ room.
Yobi threw the bottles at Danny before running to hide behind the sofa and looking at him as the bottles explode making a very big noise and throwing paint at everything and everybody in the room.
“grrrr”, Hitomi said passing a hand in her sticky hair before laughing, “I always wanted to try turning my hair red.”
“Very funny”, Jayden said.
The little ones started to cry.
“I got paint in my eyes”, Theo cried.
“Well done, Danny, youhou, so artistic”, Yobi said clapping getting out of behind the sofa and escaping in the living-room.
“Gideon”, Jayden started to yell.
Grenadine was trying to help Melody with the pieces of her fairy now covered in paint but was only making things worse and the little girl was crying even more.
“Just you two go wash yourself “, Jayden said to Hitomi and Grenadine, “as you are old enough to and I’ll take care of the rest.”
He seemed passably angry. Grenadine started to protest about catching Yobi first but Gideon opened the door and entered followed by Sedana and Taika. She pushed Hitomi upstairs in a hurry.

“Do you think he saw me like this?” Grenadine asked when they arrived in the first floor.
“Of course not”, Hitomi said laughing.
“Oh my god, he did”, Grenadine said looking horrified.

Hump Day Hook 7: Attic Mirror

It's Wednesday Hump Day Hook again. Find the other writers here.
If you miss my other hooks, there are here but don't worry, I'm posting them randomly so they seem unrelated... maybe.

We are going back to Attic Mirror, Hitomi is visiting an old mine looking for an entrance to Teneria but things aren't quite as good as her optimistic mind expected.

Nothing. She looked down disappointed, and it seemed that something was shining on the floor. She knelt down and brushed the surface of the ground with her flash light. The characters were there. It was a miracle. They resembled what they had already found on both sides of the mirror. She took her notebook out of her bag and started to write them down. She verified them twice and had another closer look around, pulping the walls to see if there wasn't an entrance for Teneria. Her heart was beating fast in her chest. Teneria seemed to be so close suddenly. She looked few times at every wall before realizing that there was actually no door. She started to go back but stopped and turned around to take some of the earth of the mine in a little bag. It was maybe stupid, but having Ethan and Viorel always talking about taking samples of everything they saw, was reminding her that if there was some magic going on around this place, the earth and stones should know about it. She put everything in her bag and started to walk back a bit faster than when she came in. She was feeling the same difficulty to breath than with her class excursion few year ago and it wasn't her favourite feeling especially as she was all alone in the mine now. It wasn’t a good time to faint.

Hump Day Hook 6: Attic Mirror

If you are looking for the Indie Block Party, look here.

It's Wednesday Hump Day Hook again. Find the other writers here.
If you miss my other hooks, there are here but don't worry, I'm posting them randomly so they seem unrelated... maybe.

Today's hook is a little bit longer than usual. It seems that people enjoyed the sisterly interaction at the start of Attic Mirror last week so today we are starting right were we left off, we'll see that Grenadine is not following her own advices.

I don’t want to go talk to him, I don’t have anything to tell him,” Hitomi said getting annoyed.
“You’re denying it too much to be trusted,” Grenadine said with a smile.
Hitomi shook her head wondering if resonating with Grenadine was a good idea, but if she didn’t she would probably then be suspicious for not saying anything.
“Even if I wanted to talk to him, I said even if. I couldn’t. Girls don’t go talk to boys like that, we have to wait until they come talk to us," Hitomi said as if it was a basic and obviously indestructible rule.
“Come on, nobody does that anymore, people invented parity now, you can go talk to him, there is no law against it,” Grenadine said laughing.
“It’s not about law, but boys and girls are different, you should know that by now. Boys always need to feel they are the one in control,” Hitomi said very seriously.
“What is this supposed to mean?” Grenadine said a bit lost.
Hitomi felt that she was finally, after days of endless debates about whether or not she liked Timmy, getting something through Grenadine’s thick head.
“It’s just a question of perception. Boys want to think they are controlling everything, so we let them believe they do and they are happy with it,” Hitomi said.
“I still don’t see what it has to do with you not talking to Timmy,” Grenadine said.
“If I wanted to talk to him and to have a result I should let him talk to me first, because if I go talk to him he will think that I’m the one in control because I took the first step and he would probably be scared. So the best thing to do is to wait,” Hitomi tried to explain.
“So you let him be in control that is very courageous and it will make every feminist in the world want to kill you,” Grenadine said looking at Hitomi a bit shocked.
“Of course not, I let him think he has the control while I’m the one having it,” Hitomi said.
“This time I really don’t understand,” Grenadine answered.
“If he asked me, he doesn’t have a choice anymore so he lost all his powers on the near future transferring it to me who has the choice to said whatever I want to,” Hitomi said.
“I see,” Grenadine said sighing, she was not entirely convinced but Hitomi had a point.
“But he will still believe he is in power because he took the first step and that will keep him confident. It’s basic psychology,” Hitomi added hoping Grenadine was going to think it over for the entire week.
“So if he doesn’t come to talk to you, you will keep on waiting forever wondering if he likes you too and hoping desperately for a sign,” Grenadine said happy not to believe in basic psychology.
“But I don’t want him to come talk to me and I’m not hoping for anything,” Hitomi said, her hopes for a quiet walk fading again.
“But if neither of you move, nothing is going to happen, you’re crazy,” Grenadine added as if it was the basic and only rule which should be taken into consideration.
“I told you that…” Hitomi started but Grenadine hide behind her glancing at the three people who just entered the street few meters in front of them.
“Hide me,” she whispered.
“Why are you hiding from Gideon?” Hitomi asked trying to continue walking.
“Not from Gideon, but he is with them again,” Grenadine said, glancing at them as they turned into the next street.
“They are really nice,” Hitomi said wondering what was wrong with her sister.
“I know it’s just that, each time I’m near her I feel stupid, even if she says or does nothing I just feel that she is too smart for me to be able to say anything interesting when she is around. And he is, he is…” Grenadine tried to hide a blush and started to walk again a bit faster than usual.
“You’re having a crush on Sedana,” Hitomi said opening big eyes. It was something she could probably use. “Of course not,” Grenadine said unable to hide a smile.
“I know what I have seen,” Hitomi said.
“You haven’t seen anything,” Grenadine said.
“As much as you have seen about me and Timmy,” Hitomi said holding her revenge for the past few weeks’ conversations.
“Alright, maybe a little just I feel weird when he is here so I can’t stay in the same room and I want to see him when he is away,” Grenadine said. “But it has nothing to do with a crush or with what’s happening between you and Timmy.”
“Nothing is happening between me and Timmy. You’re the crazy one,” Hitomi said pushing her forward to the house. “Let’s hurry, maybe you can spy,” she said laughing.
“Very funny,” Grenadine answered making sure they were out of sight before turning at the crossing.
