About Witch Raising: The Book of Fire

Witch Raising is a new series with Brownie, the heroine of Demon Soul as the main character. This series is part of the House at the Crossing Series and follows Demon Soul and Demon and Fairy but instead of being centered on the adventure of Sahel and his demon friends, it follows Brownie as she goes from being a normal girl to a bad ass witch. She has been practicing magick for a while now, saving people from difficult situations but the people at the house, including Sahel aren't happy with her new calling. Feeling that she doesn't have a choice and has to keep learning witchcraft, Brownie leaves to meet other witches.

The excerpt, we start where we left off last week

The old Graddy's owner and one of the waiter arrived a few minutes later with plates. Marri and Sandy had asked for a version without the beef. They were given a rather bad look but they were given their potato cheese stew anyway.
The meals were presented on black font plates in the center of a wooden board. The wooden board was a bit hot and Brownie was careful not to touch the plate. The Stew was smoking hot. It seemed a bit strange to have a fire stew that didn't leave you on fire but the meal was appropriate for the season. It was starting to get cold, especially in the evening and it was warming her up from the inside out.
It was a bit strange though to eat something with mostly potatoes, that wasn't something she had tasted before and there was really a lot of cheese. They were also given little pieces of bread just out of the oven they were supposed to used to deep into the stew and eat with. It was delicious and Brownie couldn't even taste the wine in there. It reminded her a little bit of a Hachi Parmentier mixed with a Coq au Vin with a cheese sauce.
"So what about the Fire Stew?" Josh asked.
"Way more stew than fire," Samuel answered. "I wanted something spicy, don't they have anything spicy around?"
"It's not really the region for spice," Samantha answered.
"Oh yeah, cause of course you would know," Samuel said.
She taped her fingers on her book but didn't answer. Brownie got the drift. She was happy the stew wasn't spicy. The potatoes were already filling up her stomach as if they were stones. She couldn't imagine how it would have worked with spicy stones.
She took a sip of water. All the others had ordered wine to go with the stew but she wasn't in the mood for drinking. Actually, she had never drunk alcohol before and she had heard too many horror stories about drinking with strangers or people you didn't know too well. She needed all her senses to protect herself and she didn't see how she would be able to rise a barrier if she was inebriated. It didn't work well without concentration and alcohol was forbidding just that.
