Northern Ireland: Belfast, The Giant's Ring (with video)

The Giant's Ring is a henge monument from the Neolithic period in Belfast. It is near the Shaw's Bridge crossing of the River Lagan.

It was built around 2700BC. It consists of a circular enclosure with a small passage tomb at the center. The original purpose was most likely a meeting place or a memorial to the dead, probably part of a European Neolithic religion which seem to be death oriented.

In the 18th century the site was used for horse racing.
