WeWriWar 219: Rainbow catcher

Welcome to a new excerpt of Rainbow Catcher for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday.

Now let's go back to our story.

Summary of previous episodes: Clarissa is coughing and wanted to watch Everett Cooper on TV but Jason refused, she is due to get her rainbow the next day but she seems scared, to make her feel better Jason leave the TV on. Clarissa tried to explain about rainbows, she is a big fan of Everett Cooper but Jason is not too sure about it. Clarissa complained about her dialophone but Jason needs to go to work. Before completely leaving he is thinking about getting her her rainbow. We flashed back to the meeting Jason had with a rainbow seller at the black market. Jason left Clarissa's room to go to work. Jason was talking to his boss about the rainbow coming the next day. Jason prepared the money for the rainbow in a sport bag and went to the hospital. The rainbow seller arrived for the delivery. But it was a scam and Jason prepares to go get the rainbow himself in the desert. Markus has a last surprise for him.

We start just where we left off last week.

He was alone in the desert, and only the desert was watching him. He knew that he could hide nothing from the desert and he had nothing to fear as long as he would keep watching the unmovable desert. He had nobody to give account to, nobody for who he should watch his behavior, nobody looking at him, nobody expecting anything from him. It was a new love story between him and the desert and as the desert’s yellow air was digging inside him he felt closer to himself than he had ever been. He wondered if that was what had happened to Markus as well, if that was the sensation of freedom from the bike that was enhanced by the deep knowledge of loneliness. It wasn’t a sad loneliness. It was more like the sensation of being where he should have been a long time ago to accomplish himself fully before being able to reach to other people.

  1. I live in the desert (well, in a desert city, at least) and I can't say I ever had a mystical experience like he did. That's too bad for me, of course, though I've had such experiences along northern rivers, peat bogs, and even a glacier.

  2. I LOVE your description of the desert as almost a sentient being on its own. This is a terrific excerpt!!!

  3. I agree with Veronica about the desert. What an experience he's having. I've never felt that way about any inanimate object or place. But he certainly does. Wow. What an excerpt.
