Mystery Monday 113: Murder at the Conference 10

Welcome to Mystery Monday. This week, we continue with Murder at the Conference.

Let's get back where we left off with chapter 1 last time.

“I'll do it when I get back from dinner or tomorrow morning,” she said. “Aren't you going home yet?”

It was too early for home. At least from the point of view of the state of my poster. All my boxes were back out of place.

“Not yet, I want to finish this first.”

She sighed.

“You're such a traitor.”

“For wanting to finish my work?” I asked. That was typical Christa, trying to make me feel guilty for doing the right thing. That had been going on since we began to share office. At first I would go out with her, but recently, I had stopped paying attention. Actually, when my ex-boyfriend had started to treat me like crap I had had my little workaholic revenge or something like that, to help me cope. I guess she could blame her boyfriend for me being a traitor then.

“I knew you wouldn't understand. If anyone ask you where I am...”

“I'll say you're out for dinner.” I interrupted her.

“Right, whatever, not like I care,” she said. “I'll be ready on time as usual anyway, no need to stay here all night for it.”

She switched off her screen and walked out. The room was suddenly a bit darker and I could feel a slight tension released in my shoulder. Somehow, I was glad Christa had passed on coming with me to tour China. If we hadn't been stuck in the same office, we might never have even talked to each other. She was stressing me out. I didn't know why but that was true. I worked ten time faster too when she wasn't around. It was like walking on egg shells all the time when she was here. I had to be careful with everything I did and everything I said and at the same time, I knew she wasn't. Because if she had been caring a little bit she wouldn't have called me a traitor. What on Earth did she meant by that anyway? All I wanted was to finish my poster and not having to keep thinking about it all night.
