WeWriWar 105: Rainbow Catcher

Welcome to a new excerpt of Rainbow Catcher for the Weekend Writing Warrior and Snippet Sunday.

I'm trying to get Rainbow Catcher ready and if everything goes as planed it should be published at the end of June, so exciting!

I'm also working on the cover so you might see some changes soon.

Summary of previous episodes: Clarissa is coughing and wanted to watch Everett Cooper on TV but Jason refused, she is due to get her rainbow the next day but she seems scared, to make her feel better Jason leave the TV on. Clarissa tried to explain about rainbows.

Now let's go back to business. We start just where we left off last week.

Recently, Clarissa had been feeling weaker and weaker, and even hiding it from Jason, she started coughing blood. If the rainbow didn’t arrive soon, her heart’s damages would be too high and she wouldn’t survive the surgery. The doctor wouldn't explain why though, he have her a picture book, the one they use to teach children before the surgery so that they don't get scared. But at twelve, Clarissa wasn't a child anymore, she had stopped long ago, when her parents died and then she was locked here. There were no complicated words in the book, only drawings of people smiling, most of the time thinking about the surgery, she didn't want to smile, she had hidden the book in her drawer.
“I wonder how he can find the rainbows so quickly and even at night, nobody else goes to work at night, it’s like this guy never sleeps or something,” Jason said. “That’s why he is so good! He knows how to find them everywhere, he calculates the wind and rain direction in the desert at night, that way, he knows exactly where the rainbow is going to appear in the morning and he just has to wait for it. That’s the smartest and most brilliant technique ever,” Clarissa answered.

  5. I love the last line. It is so perfectly child-like in its enthusiasm -- and maybe a touch of hero-worship?

  6. He'd have to be clever to catch such a rare rainbow.

  7. Intriguing story. I liked the detail about the picture book, which of course is too childish for your character, as she herself said. Great snippet!

  8. Whatever the surgery is--and you've got me wondering about that--I'm sure it'll be interesting and different.

  12. Catching rainbows... it's clear he's already caught a heart. Or... is that the dark side of this story!!! (just thought of that possibility... eep!)

  13. (I guess my first comment never made it.)

I was just wondering though if the rainbow catchers might have a darker side... the possibility that the catcher was gathering the power of the health of all the people whose illnesses were escaping into the clouds, and that only the wealthy were able to pay enough to get back their health.
