Watermelon (A-to-Z challenge 2015)

Hello and welcome to a new fruity post for the A-to-Z challenge. Today, we are going to talk about the watermelon because W obviously.

Personally, I don't like melon nor water melon. For me, it's just filled with water and the taste is too diluted to be any good. But I know that it's also something very refreshing to eat in summer and a lot of people love it and can't go without it. In my labs, they even manage to have watermelon parties. One on the students will bring a watermelon or two and they would eat it together. It's not really something I was used too growing up as my parents don't like this fruit either.

The super cool thing is Japan though is the melon pan which I totally love. It might taste a little bit like melon but because it's a pastry and has some consistency it's a lot better suited for me. They also have melon soda which is strangely green and totally filled with chemical but so worth the try.

Ok, now that the personal and Japanese stuff are out of the way, let's talk about the watermelon. The watermelon is a cucurbitacea like the zucchini and pumpkins which comes from southern Africa and it's also a kind of berry. Not kidding on the berry again. I need to learn more about what is a berry, maybe when I figure out how they decide to include fruits in this category I'll write a new post or something. The outside of the watermelon can be green with black stripes or yellow dots and the inside goes from white to red and everything in between, it also has a lot of seeds. Of course, the watermelon was introduce to America which managed to get the larger one 119 kg... that's almost heavier than two me which I'm happy about really, but that's some huge fruit, I wonder who ate it, it can feed and entire village.

This version is called the moon star watermelon and it's orange inside. I think it's a good name. It have a large dot for the moon and little one for the stars. That's kind of cool.

The watermelon is naturally round or long. The moon star watermelon is generally more round than on the picture.
However, you can grow them inside of square boxes to give them a square shape as they are going to take all the available space. Kind of mean and kind of awesome.

  1. Water melons are hugely popular in summer - water melon juice is awesome but tedious to make considering one has to pick out the seeds.. We are in the midst of summer heat so this fruit is on top of any shopping list.. :)

  2. I grew up eating watermelon in the summer; I've never thought of it as an acquired taste, but then I am learning new things every day on this A-to-Z adventure!
Lots of interesting info here - thanks for sharing!
