Hello and welcome to a new fruity A-to-Z April Challenge post. Today is V day and I was going to go for your basic Vanilla but it turns out that Vanilla is a spice not a fruit, who knew? So instead we are going to go for some fruit discovery: Enter the voavanga.
I'm not gonna kid you, some letters are a lot more difficult than others to come up with something, especially at the end. I wonder if that's the reason they have been ordered this way, except that wouldn't make any logical sense seeing that it's the latin alphabet. I went to check, I couldn't help myself. So, the alphabetical order was first used in the 1st millennium BCE so not for English... here we go. Anyway, voavanga.
The voavanga is a green fruit which turns brown when it matures. It is also called Spanish tamarind. It comes from Africa and is cultivated especially in Guadeloupe and Réunion. It's tree is acclimated to rainy and dry tropical climate. And in Guadeloupe they grow near the bottom of la Soufrière, the volcano.
It's an acidic fruit that is eaten very ripped. It is not on the market very often it's a tradition of la Réunion which means ditching school as the kids were eating it while walking outside when missing school. It is very popular with older people and is a symbol of poverty and freedom.
It's a bit difficult to cultivate as it need some irrigation and space. The leaves are also victim from the caterpillars. The trees gives fruit in Autumn in Réunion and in Mars April in Antilles.
