Tuesday Cinema: The Imitation Game

book cover instead of movie poster

Hello everyone and welcome to a new Tuesday Cinema. This week we are watching a war movie without much battle scene: The Imitaion Game.

The story: Genius mathematician Alan Turing is different. He doesn't have that little thing that allow people to communicate with enigma. He doesn't understand why people say things when they mean something else, but he likes puzzles and that leads him to become an expert in cryptography. He is recruited by the MI6 to help with decoding German messages encrypted by the Enigma machine, but while everyone is trying to break the code by trying one combination after the next, Alan wants to build a machine, Christopher, to break them all.

My feelings: I think this was a good story. The main character has no idea what people are talking about most of the time. He doesn't get the nuances unless he gives them all his attention. I had to think a bit to get the "lunch" part, I was "what's wrong with the dialogues" when it was actually perfect. I like how he is fixed on a goal and ready to do anything to achieve it, even get out of his isolation. Another great thing about this movie is how he doesn't seem to get the prejudice toward women and invite Joan to take the test, only interested in her brain and later her insight on the cryptography problem, while on the other hand he ends up discredited for being homosexual.
