Thursday Taster 63: Parallel Slip

Hello and welcome to a new Thursday Taster, the day when awesome writers all over the blogosphere come together to give you tasty bits of their last fiction. You can find the list here.
Jonas was really bad at soccer, that ran in the family but I refused to tell him anything about the spaceship until he practiced with me. That was tedious but fun at the same time. I had to reduce the length of pass to one meter so that he could shoot and then I walked further away, and further away again and he started to make progress. I could still see that it was going to take a lot of time for him to get anywhere near good enough for Tom, but at the same time, I didn't mean to make him a pro or anything, I just wanted him to get some confidence, to make him see that he could sport and maths that there was nothing wrong with that.
"What are you teaching me son?" My dad asked getting out of his car after having parked in the alley.
"Soccer, so that kid at school stop calling him a nerd because he doesn't like it?" I answered sending the ball to Jonas.
He missed it and had to run toward it for a bit. I watched making sure he didn't end up of the road.
"They called me a nerd too," my dad answered.
"We went to your office and we made a bit of a mess," I said. I had been unable to put his books back in their very particular order.
"I'm just glad you didn't end up buried, I ordered new shelves but it's a new room I actually need," he answered, "there is no space for them."
"So what is it all about, kids calling Jonas nerd?" He asked.
"He is having a hard time at school, on a daily basis," I said.
"He never told me, or his mum, his grates are good even better than that, the teacher didn't say anything, I would never have suspected," my father said.
"Of course not, and I mean, it's kid game anyway, for the teacher, it doesn't matter," I said, "it was the same for me. And even if you or mum had known, that wouldn't have changed anything. If kids decided something's wrong with you, something's always going to be wrong with you."
"Then what can I do," my father said passing a hand in his hear.
Jonas was coming back kicking in the ball and stopping to correct his trajectory.
"Make sure he knows what's important and that he stops believing that maths and grammar are stupid things for nerds and that it's a bad thing but that it's cool to play soccer," I said.
"Then why are you playing with him," my dad asked.
"Because he also needs to believe that he can have it all," I answered and I caught the ball Jonas threw at me.

  1. I was terrible at sport. Thankfully I wasn't made fun of for it. I was sometimes teased for being a nerd, but it wasn't constant. Bullying is horrible.
