Thursday taster 25: Parallel Slip

Hello everybody and welcome to a new Thursday Taster!
Please don't forget to check on the other tasters, you can find the list here.

Today is a sad day for the freedom of expression after the attack on Charlie Hebdo. I don't write political or satirical oriented story, but I will would like to offer my condolences to the family of the victim.

Keep writing everyone, keep drawing and never let them take you down, what you are doing IS IMPORTANT!

On a lighter note, let's continue our Parallel Slip story where we left off last week

My phone vibrated on the desk.
"What's that?" she asked.
There was no hiding it now. I managed to grab the phone and read my text before she got to it. I closed it and put it in my jeans back pocket. Dad was downstairs. All I had to do was to get out of the house and get in his car.
"None of your business," I closed the bag and put it on my shoulder. Grabbed my envelope of today's scan and the bag with all my diaries. She was standing in front of the door.
"You are not going anywhere. I want answers," she said.
"Dad came to pick me up," I said.
I didn't want to say it. Not because she hated dad, but because as a human being I knew that it was a blow and that it would touch her somewhere that hadn't been touched for a long time.
She put her hands on my shoulders and shook me, she was out of words for the first time.
I pushed her aside and she clung at my bag. I walked through the door with her trying to hold me back.
"You can't go with him, I'll call the police, I'll get him arrested."
"For seeing his daughter?" I asked.
"He can't keep you safe," she said.
"I can tell the police that you can't keep me safe either, the doctor would agree that my stress level is not healthy," I said.
I was using her own way of doing things against her. It was as if today, she had sent me to the hospital one time too many.
"Why are you doing this to me?"
"You need time for yourself mum," I said. "You need to learn to take care of yourself instead of putting it all on me."
"You can't do that, I won't let you," she said. "Is it about university? I'll write them a letter to tell them how sick you are, they won't let you in."
I managed to get down the stairs.
"There are laws that will make you let me go," I said. "Don't make it harder on yourself."
"What have I ever done to you? I gave you everything," she said.
I took her hand away from my bag.
"Goodbye mum," I said.
She stepped out of the door after me. My dad was waiting in the alley.
"He'll turn his back on you, just like he did ten years ago," my mum yelled.
"Are you all right?" My dad asked, taking my bags.
"I'm not sure," I said. "That's the most difficult thing I ever did."
"I know princess, I did it before," he put my bags in the trunk and I took a seat at the back.
"Hi," Sabrina said.
She was my father's wife. I had met her only once before, when my aunt had sneaked me out of my mother's reach so that I could see my new little brother.
"Hi," I said.
The blond boy in the back seat next to me looked so much like my dad it was incredible.

  1. The hardest thing, but probably one of the healthiest ones. Now she can start to get on with living.

  2. Her mother can't keep her forever. She'll eventually have to branch out on her own. I like it that she was able to take a stand. It was coming, you know. Great post.
